Book Beyond the Grip of Craniosynostosis

Download or read book Beyond the Grip of Craniosynostosis written by Kase D. Johnstun and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both a memoir and a medical study, this unique work explores the extensive and tragic reach of craniosynostosis, the premature fusing of the cranial sutures in infants. The author--born with craniosynostosis in 1975--documents his and his family's struggles, weaving his story into a broader view of this birth defect. Included are interviews with respected craniofacial surgeons, neurosurgeons and pediatric anesthesiologists, an explanation of the major types of craniosynostosis, and a summary of the modern medical history of cranial sutures, as well as ancient treatments dating to the time of Hippocrates. The experiences of 11 American families affected by craniosynostosis are chronicled, demonstrating the uniqueness of each case and each treatment. Their stories illustrate the surgical techniques now being used to release cranial sutures, allowing the brain to grow naturally--though not every story ends this way.

Download or read book Craniosynostosis written by Meyer Michael Cohen and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Craniosynostosis, the early fusion of skull sutures, is a serious abnormality of infancy and childhood. Because there are many forms of the condition, both isolated and syndromatic, proper diagnosis is essential before treatment could be carried out. Not only has surgical treatment advanced in recent years, but basic knowledge of sutural and molecular biology of craniosynostosis syndromes has recently come to light. Because dramatic changes have occurred in the field, particularly in molecular biology, this new edition has been rewritten and new chapters have been added on the growth of sutures, craniofacial surgery, and epidemiology and clinical correlations. The molecular basis of craniosynostosis, with emphasis on fibroblast growth receptors, and recent research on postnatal growth and the craniofacial complex, will be discussed in detail. Many new syndromes have been delineated the established conditions have been redefined.

  • ISBN : 1447113233
  • Pages : 550 pages

Download or read book The Craniosynostoses written by David J. David and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human skull has many functions. The largest component of the skull, the neurocranium, protects and insulates the brain. It comprises the dome-shaped vault or calvaria, obviously a protective structure, and the more complex cranial base, which gives the vault a massive foundation and also houses the organs of hearing, balance, and smell. The facial skeleton, or splanchnocranium, encloses the upper airway and the mouth. Chewing, the cQ-ordinated action ofthe jaws and teeth, is a function of the facial skeleton. The orbits, formed from both calvarial and facial bones, house the eyes and their accessory muscles. The'skull also provides skeletal support for the muscles which affect speech and facial expression. It is largely by these that people communicate and display their emotions. Personality is judged on speech and on facial appearances, by conscious or subconscious aesthetic comparisons with cultural ideas-and prejudices. So the shape of the skull has, or can have, profound emotional significance.

Download or read book Craniosynostoses written by Maximilian Muenke and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Craniosynostosis - the premature fusion of the cranial sutures of an infant's skull - is a challenging and complex condition that can occur as part of a syndrome or in isolation. In the last two decades increased knowledge about the structure and function of the human genome has enabled the discovery of the molecular etiologies of most forms of syndromic craniosynostosis, which in turn has allowed for the analysis of normal and abnormal sutural biology from the atomic to the population-based level. In parallel with the increase in basic biological understanding, advances in clinical diagnosis and treatment have been achieved including improved prenatal imaging technology and craniofacial surgical techniques as well as condition-specific care in specialized hospitals and clinical units. This book represents a comprehensive overview on the subject of craniosynostosis. Its 19 excellent chapters were written by the foremost authorities in the field for a wide range of readers. They cover topics including a historical review, basic biological and molecular studies, the various common and uncommon syndromes, nonsyndromic craniosynostoses, genetic testing, prenatal ultrasonography, and recent methods of neurosurgical and maxillofacial treatment. Both investigators at the bench and clinicians at the operating table will appreciate this timely book which will be the definitive volume on craniosynostosis for many years to come.
