Book Craniomandibular Muscles

Download or read book Craniomandibular Muscles written by Arthur J. Miller and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive scientific investigation into every aspect of craniomandibular muscle function in both human and experimental animal studies. Topics discussed cover three broad areas: the anatomical, physiological, and histochemical aspects of these muscles; the special importance of these muscles to resting mandibular posture and mastication; and their role in clinically relevant problems involved with occlusion, craniomandibular disorders, and the growth and development of the cranioskeleton. Over 150 figures and tables are used to illustrate the concepts in these three areas. Methods for studying craniomandibular muscles are examined in depth, and the use of classically defined techniques such as electromyography and newer approaches using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and immunological identification of contractile proteins are discussed. Specialists in oral biology, orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and craniomandibular disorders in schools and in private practice should consider this book an indispensable resource for their work and studies.

Book Interactions Between the Craniomandibular System and Cervical Spine

Download or read book Interactions Between the Craniomandibular System and Cervical Spine written by Stephan Klemm and published by Diplomica Verlag. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This prospective, randomized, double-blind investigation evaluated the influence of a short-time artificial change of occlusion to the upper cervical spine mobility. Twenty 14-19 aged female dancers were investigated in a cross-over-design on head movement rotation in anteflexion with a three-dimensional ultrasonic measurement device, the Zebris 3D Motion Analyzer (CMS 70 P). A change of the occlusion was produced by positioning a 0.75mm foil of tin between premolar and first molar of the right side. Towards the current theory of convergence of cervical and trigeminal nerves the change of occlusion should enlarge tensions in the suboccipital muscles and consequently decrease the mobility of the upper spine. The results of this investigation are: There were no significant differences in measuring movements of the upper cervical spine in dependence of changes of the occlusion. Assessments of the probationers to the changes in tension or motion support these results.

Book Manual of Temporomandibular Disorders

Book Temporomandibular Disorders

Download or read book Temporomandibular Disorders written by Henry A. Gremillion and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book acquaints the reader with the basic science principles needed in order to understand temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) with a view to helping practitioners manage individuals with TMDs in accordance with the tenets of evidence-based dental medicine. The opening chapters provide essential information on the embryology, anatomy, and physiology of the masticatory system, which includes both myogenous and arthrogenous anatomic structures. Using this knowledge as a foundation, the reader will be better prepared to grasp the function and, ultimately, the dysfunction of masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joint, both of which are addressed in detail. The book’s final section is exclusively devoted to management principles and includes a chapter on psychosocial considerations. By following a translational approach to evidence-based practice measures, as outlined in this book, the clinician will be excellently positioned to choose appropriate interventions on a case-specific basis.

Book Masticatory Muscles Activities in Temporomandibular Joint Internal Derangement

Download or read book Masticatory Muscles Activities in Temporomandibular Joint Internal Derangement written by Chantal M. Lafrenière and published by National Library of Canada = Bibliothèque nationale du Canada. This book was released on 1995 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intramuscular EMG of the lateral pterygoid muscles, surface EMG of the temporalis and masseter muscles, electrogoniometry and force measurements of the TMJ were synchronously used to investigate the biomechanical role of the two portions of the lateral pterygoid muscle in relation to internal derangement (ID) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This study dealt with the EMG analysis of five static conditions: resting, resisted protraction, maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in opening, in molar and incisor clenching of TMJ ID and control subjects. The analysis of variance results of the integrated linear envelop (LE) EMG showed no significant differences between the two groups. The integrated LE EMG of the SLP was significantly lower in the TMJ group during molar clenching (104$\mu$V $\pm$ 60.0 over 159$\mu$V $\pm$ 68.8 for a p =.020). The SLP seemed to have lost its discal stabilizing function during clenching. The integrated LE EMG signals of the ILP were significantly higher in the TMJ ID group during rest, resisted protraction and incisor clenching (p =.029, p =.046, p =.031 respectively). The ILP muscle has probably adapted to control the inner joint instability while continuing its own actions. The results of the isometric forces showed that TMJ ID subjects exhibited significantly lower molar bite forces (297.1N over 419N, p =.042) confirming that they have less muscle strength and tissue tolerance than subjects with healthy masticatory muscle system. Incisor bite forces, however, showed a tendency to be higher in the TMJ ID group (233N over 180.5N, p =.168), possibly resulting from the training of a protracted bite and/or hyperactivity of the ILP associated with ID. Therefore a neuromuscular adaptation could be occurring in TMJ ID masticatory system affecting muscular actions and forces. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Download or read book Temporomandibular Disorders written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), are a set of more than 30 health disorders associated with both the temporomandibular joints and the muscles and tissues of the jaw. TMDs have a range of causes and often co-occur with a number of overlapping medical conditions, including headaches, fibromyalgia, back pain and irritable bowel syndrome. TMDs can be transient or long-lasting and may be associated with problems that range from an occasional click of the jaw to severe chronic pain involving the entire orofacial region. Everyday activities, including eating and talking, are often difficult for people with TMDs, and many of them suffer with severe chronic pain due to this condition. Common social activities that most people take for granted, such as smiling, laughing, and kissing, can become unbearable. This dysfunction and pain, and its associated suffering, take a terrible toll on affected individuals, their families, and their friends. Individuals with TMDs often feel stigmatized and invalidated in their experiences by their family, friends, and, often, the health care community. Misjudgments and a failure to understand the nature and depths of TMDs can have severe consequences - more pain and more suffering - for individuals, their families and our society. Temporomandibular Disorders: Priorities for Research and Care calls on a number of stakeholders - across medicine, dentistry, and other fields - to improve the health and well-being of individuals with a TMD. This report addresses the current state of knowledge regarding TMD research, education and training, safety and efficacy of clinical treatments of TMDs, and burden and costs associated with TMDs. The recommendations of Temporomandibular Disorders focus on the actions that many organizations and agencies should take to improve TMD research and care and improve the overall health and well-being of individuals with a TMD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative and comprehensive account of the assessment and conservative management of temporomandibular disorders. Recent emphasis has been on 'evidence-based practice' at the expense of the clinical reality which should also take account of clinician expertise and patient preference. A sound research base is not always available. This text addresses the clinical reality of having to make decisions using other sources of knowledge in the absence of a comprehensive scientific rationale. It advocates clinical and evidence-informed practice - an approach which acknowledges the value of clinician experience and expertise as well as research findings. Compiled and edited by two highly regarded and experienced practitioners, researchers and authors who have already published many books and journal articles in the field. With contributions from a mix of 28 internationally-based clinicians and clinician-researchers allowing the text to highlight both current best evidence and clinicians' expertise and experience. Contributors include talented young clinicians as well as established experts in orthopaedic physiotherapy and world-level expert researchers.

Book Current Controversies in Temporomandibular Disorders

Download or read book Current Controversies in Temporomandibular Disorders written by Craniomandibular Institute. Squaw Valley Winter Seminar and published by Quintessence Publishing (IL). This book was released on 1992 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume discloses the various and, at times, conflicting views regarding temporomandibular disorders (TMD) as presented at the Craniomandibular Institute's 10th Annual Squaw Valley Winter Seminar held in January 1991. The field of TMD has been long on testimonials and clinical opinion but short on scientific documentation. As a result, there is presently a growing concern in the field that scientific foundation is needed to support the various belief systems and to improve credibility. This seminar encouraged participants to openly discuss and expose the controversial issues plaguing the field and to provide clinical and basic research to support or to question those issues. To this end, 14 internationally renowned experts assembled to discuss the current status of terminology, epidemiology, etiology, diagnoses, and management for TMD. This book is divided into four main parts, each of which helps to provide the reader with a better understanding of the complexity of TMD. A wide variety of scientific evidence, clinical experience, and informed opinions is presented. This variety will ensure that the volume will serve as the foundation for future discoveries in the study of TMD. As such, this book will be of interest to all who work within the field.
