Book excerpt: “Craig wields powerful and vivid prose to illuminate a country and a family trapped not only by war and revolution, but also by desire and loss.” —Viet Thanh Nguyen, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Miss Burma tells the story of modern-day Burma through the eyes of Benny and Khin, husband and wife, and their daughter Louisa. After attending school in Calcutta, Benny settles in Rangoon, then part of the British Empire, and falls in love with Khin, a woman who is part of a long-persecuted ethnic minority group, the Karen. World War II comes to Southeast Asia, and Benny and Khin must go into hiding in the eastern part of the country during the Japanese occupation, beginning a journey that will lead them to change the country’s history. Years later, Benny and Khin’s eldest child, Louisa, has a danger-filled, tempestuous childhood and reaches prominence as Burma’s first beauty queen soon before the country falls to dictatorship. As Louisa navigates her newfound fame, she is forced to reckon with her family’s past, the West’s ongoing covert dealings in her country, and her own loyalty to the cause of the Karen people. Based on the story of the author’s mother and grandparents, Miss Burma is a captivating portrait of how modern Burma came to be and of the ordinary people swept up in the struggle for self-determination and freedom. “At once beautiful and heartbreaking . . . An incredible family saga.” —Refinery29 “Miss Burma charts both a political history and a deeply personal one—and of those incendiary moments when private and public motivations overlap.” —Los Angeles Times

Book Stand Fast Craig Royston

Download or read book Stand Fast Craig Royston written by William Black and published by . This book was released on 1891 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Mr. Bethune imagines himself the descendant of an ancient Scotch family, whose motto for centuries has been "Stand Fast, Craig-Royston." He is engaged in getting up a work on Scotch ballad poetry, and imagines he has squandered a fortune. He feels the world owes him a living, and, greatly to his grand-daughter Maisie's mortification, he accepts favors from all sides. The plot enables Black to introduce quotations from Scotch literature with artistic effect. The romantic interest is slight but tender and pretty. The descriptions of Scotch scenery, manners and customs are elaborated with exquisite care. --Literary News, Feb. 1891.

Book excerpt: CLUB TWISTED is one twisted book. With hard hitting stories ranging from, Crime Fiction, Thriller Suspense to Horror. With stories that pack punches and twists, with a special surprise in four of them, and in places you won’t imagine. RADIO SMOKE: ‘The naked branches on the trees moved like giant spider legs as the wind blew them, and the birds in those trees sung weary songs, and the crickets on the ground were starting their chirping for the evening. Everything gave the impression that the world was the same; nothing around her had changed. But she definitely had.’ ECHOES: ‘The elevator arrived, giving them both a start as it made a crunching sound when it stopped. As the elevator doors opened they heard a noise, a distant noise, like the sound of a speeding train getting nearer. It came closer and closer and was almost on top of them, when a pair of terrifying and ear piercing female screams joined in with the rushing sound, making the most macabre noise the women had ever heard. They joined hands and moved a step back away from the elevator’s open doors.’ THE LIGHTER: ‘Eddie was now all secure and taped to a chair; Dean looked down at him, and thought about what he had in store for him, and what he would lose if he was caught. Dismissing the latter, he thought, Fuck it. And stuffed an old rag into Eddie’s mouth then wrapped the tape tight around his head. Then he snipped the lock on the shed door so they wouldn’t be disturbed.’

Book Ryan Craig Plays Against the Tide

Download or read book Ryan Craig Plays Against the Tide written by Ryan Craig and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A scared playwright won't write a good play. We're going to have to try to find a bit more steel.' – Telegraph Ryan Craig is not afraid of controversial topics. Described as a 'playwright with the ability to become one of the best of his generation' (British Theatre Guide), his work to date is known to probe both social norms and ethical issues. Since being nominated for the Evening Standard's Most Promising Playwright Award in 2005 his plays have been produced at venues of all sizes from London's National Theatre and the Hampstead to Theatre Royal Bath and the Menier Chocolate Factory. In this first collection of his works, Craig brings together four plays that go 'against the tide', offering an insight into the power of contemporary drama that doesn't shy away from the most contentious and hot-button debates of the age. Complete with a new introduction by the author, it begins with his hit National Theatre play The Holy Rosenbergs and includes his piece, Charlotte and Theodore which premiered in 2023, published here for the first time. The Holy Rosenbergs (2011): 'buzzes with discussion and debate ... In the clarity of its construction, the tension of its climax and the slow unveiling of its emotional core, this is a very fine play indeed' (Aleks Sierz, Arts Desk) Filthy Business (2017): 'A superbly modern Mother Courage...If plays survive by creating meaty roles for actors, Ryan Craig's new work is destined for a long life' (Michael Billington, Guardian) What We Did to Weinstein (2005): 'There is no more compelling or politically significant drama in town than Ryan Craig's What We Did to Weinstein....fascinates because it reflects the complex passions of Jews in more than two minds about what Jewishness entails' (Nicholas de Jongh, Evening Standard) Charlotte and Theodore (2023): 'cancel-culture drama that bravely captures the acrimonious mood of today' (Dominic Cavendish, Telegraph)

Book excerpt: This long-awaited edition brings together for the first time 366 letters, cards and telegrams exchanged between Craig and his patron the cosmopolitan Count Kessler. An important primary source, illuminated by Dr Newman's commentary, it focuses on three areas of particular importance: - 1. Craig's artistic ideas and the spread of his influence through exhibitions and books; proposals are developed for work with Otto Brahm, Eleonora Duse, Max Reinhardt, Henry van de Velde, Eduard Verkade, Leopold Jessner, Dyaghilev, Beerbohm Tree, C. B. Cochran, and others. 2. Kessler's Cranach Press Hamlet with wood-engraved illustrations by Craig; this is a landmark in the history of twentieth-century book design and printing whose genesis is now fully revealed in these letters and amplified with reproductions of eighteen trial page proofs. 3.
