Book Painted Pomegranates and Needlepoint Rabbis

Download or read book Painted Pomegranates and Needlepoint Rabbis written by Jodi Eichler-Levine and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring a contemporary Judaism rich with the textures of family, memory, and fellowship, Jodi Eichler-Levine takes readers inside a flourishing American Jewish crafting movement. As she traveled across the country to homes, craft conventions, synagogue knitting circles, and craftivist actions, she joined in the making, asked questions, and contemplated her own family stories. Jewish Americans, many of them women, are creating ritual challah covers and prayer shawls, ink, clay, or wood pieces, and other articles for family, friends, or Jewish charities. But they are doing much more: armed with perhaps only a needle and thread, they are reckoning with Jewish identity in a fragile and dangerous world. The work of these crafters embodies a vital Judaism that may lie outside traditional notions of Jewishness, but, Eichler-Levine argues, these crafters are as much engaged as any Jews in honoring and nurturing the fortitude, memory, and community of the Jewish people. Craftmaking is nothing less than an act of generative resilience that fosters survival. Whether taking place in such groups as the Pomegranate Guild of Judaic Needlework or the Jewish Hearts for Pittsburgh, or in a home studio, these everyday acts of creativity—yielding a needlepoint rabbi, say, or a handkerchief embroidered with the Hebrew words tikkun olam—are a crucial part what makes a religious life.

Book excerpt: For many queer Jews, Jewish tradition seems like a rich tapestry which at best ignores them and at worst rejects them entirely. In reality, queerness and queer Judaism have been a constant subplot of Jewish history, if only we care to look. Spanning almost two millennia and containing translations from more than a dozen languages, Noam Sienna's new book, A Rainbow Thread: An Anthology of Queer Jewish Texts From the First Century to 1969, collects for the first time more than a hundred sources on the intersection of Jewish and queer identities. Covering poetry, drama, literature, law, midrash, and memoir, this anthology suggests that Jewish texts are not just obstacles to be overcome in the creation of queer Jewish life, but also potential resources waiting to be excavated. Through an unprecedented examination of the histories of gender and sexuality over two millennia of Jewish life around the world, this book inspires and challenges its readers to create a better future through a purposeful reflection on our past.

Book Easy and Economical Jewish Crafts

Download or read book Easy and Economical Jewish Crafts written by Susan Fishman Kramer and published by . This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These projects were formatted for 30 minutes of child participation with some prep by the teacher and some by the child, depending on the age of the child. But they can certainly be done at home. I did projects in 3 temples. They all needed me to keep the cost down. These projects are economical because they had to be. I wanted Jewish kids to understand the incredible depth and beauty of their religion. I wanted to teach Judaism through crafts. Children remember hands on. I went to a bat mitzvah at Temple B'Nai Israel in Galveston years after I had left. Kids surrounded me that had done projects years before, and described their delight in doing a project that I didn't even put in the book, a project involving adding headdress, necklace, bracelets, ear rings and nose rings to Moses' Egyptian adoptive mother. I had forgotten all about it. They never will.
