Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woven throughout with rich details of everyday life, this original, on-the-ground study of poor neighborhoods challenges much prevailing wisdom about urban poverty, shedding new light on the people, institutions, and culture in these communities. Over the course of nearly a decade, Martín Sánchez-Jankowski immersed himself in life in neighborhoods in New York and Los Angeles to investigate how social change and social preservation transpire among the urban poor. Looking at five community mainstays—the housing project, the small grocery store, the barbershop and the beauty salon, the gang, and the local high school—he discovered how these institutions provide a sense of order, continuity, and stability in places often thought to be chaotic, disorganized, and disheartened. His provocative and ground-breaking study provides new data on urban poverty and also advances a new theory of how poor neighborhoods function, illuminating the creativity and resilience that characterize the lives of those who experience the hardships associated with economic deprivation.

Book excerpt: Asphalt Pavements provides the know-how behind the design, production and maintenance of asphalt pavements and parking lots. Incorporating the latest technology, this book is the first to focus primarily on the design, production and maintenance of low-volume roads and parking areas. Special attention is given to determining the traffic capacity, required thickness and asphalt mixture type for parking applications. Topics covered include: material information such as binder properties, testing grading and selection; construction information such as mixing plant operation, proportioning, mixture placement and compaction; and design information such as thickness and mixture design methods and guidelines on applying these to highways, city streets and parking Areas. It is an essential practical guide aimed at those engineers and architects who are not directly involved in the asphalt industry, but who nonetheless need to have a good general knowledge of the subject. Asphalt Pavements provides a novice with enough information to completely design, construct and specify an asphalt pavement.

Book excerpt: When professors Stephanie and Lee decide to rent out the room above their garage to students, they were just doing it for the money. So when Joe, the short, caring, and charismatic lead singer of the post-hardcore band Armour for Life comes to live with them, both professors get more than they bargained for. Stephanie insists that her sudden desire in their new boarder is not a mid-life crisis and instead focuses all her energy in applying for tenure. Lee takes a sabbatical, writing his new critical theory book late into the night, while also listening to Joe's new music CD during the day. When a tentative friendship between Joe and Lee develops, Lee believes that he wants to help Joe escape their city the way Lee was never able to when he was younger. When Joe leaves to go on tour, both Stephanie and Lee realize how empty their house becomes without him. In order to get what they want from Joe, both professors must be the ones to take the first steps.

Book State of the art Survey of Flexible Pavement Crack Sealing Procedures in the United States

Download or read book State of the art Survey of Flexible Pavement Crack Sealing Procedures in the United States written by Robert A. Eaton and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of all 50 United States was conducted in September of 1990 to determine the state of the art of crack sealing procedures on flexible asphalt concrete pavements. The results were tabulated and a summary report prepared. A meeting was held at the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory to discuss the draft report; the comments and suggestions received were incorporated into this report. At the meeting the group identified the need for a trade organization to develop uniform specifications and terminology and to promote proper equipment, methodology, materials, training and education in the pavement crack sealing industry.

Book 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking in Pavements

Download or read book 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking in Pavements written by A. Scarpas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 1340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent past, new materials, laboratory and in-situ testing methods and construction techniques have been introduced. In addition, modern computational techniques such as the finite element method enable the utilization of sophisticated constitutive models for realistic model-based predictions of the response of pavements. The 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking of Pavements provided an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge amongst experts involved in computational analysis, material production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. All submitted contributions were subjected to an exhaustive refereed peer review procedure by the Scientific Committee, the Editors and a large group of international experts in the topic. On the basis of their recommendations, 129 contributions which best suited the goals and the objectives of the Conference were chosen for presentation and inclusion in the Proceedings. The strong message that emanates from the accepted contributions is that, by accounting for the idiosyncrasies of the response of pavement engineering materials, modern sophisticated constitutive models in combination with new experimental material characterization and construction techniques provide a powerful arsenal for understanding and designing against the mechanisms and the processes causing cracking and pavement response deterioration. As such they enable the adoption of truly "mechanistic" design methodologies. The papers represent the following topics: Laboratory evaluation of asphalt concrete cracking potential; Pavement cracking detection; Field investigation of pavement cracking; Pavement cracking modeling response, crack analysis and damage prediction; Performance of concrete pavements and white toppings; Fatigue cracking and damage characterization of asphalt concrete; Evaluation of the effectiveness of asphalt concrete modification; Crack growth parameters and mechanisms; Evaluation, quantification and modeling of asphalt healing properties; Reinforcement and interlayer systems for crack mitigation; Thermal and low temperature cracking of pavements; and Cracking propensity of WMA and recycled asphalts.

Book Cracks in the Pavement

Book excerpt: As the world begins to shift to an unpleasant and frightful state, at the switching of hands in the white house. Hate-once hidden behind closed doors, only shared amongst like-minds. Now shines bright like sunlight casting shadows and distress on the American people. From the shadows, arise a butterfly from beneath the cracked pavement, bringing hope, shining light on the struggles of black and brown American people; chained to a corrupt and unjust system. This collection of poetry, prose, quotes, songs, and rap verse; written by the motivational poet, writer, and blogger Dawn Dean; Cracks in the Pavement: Struggles of Butterflies gives insight into the lives of the underprivileged while informing the privileged who may never understand the outcry for black lives. Dawn paints a portrait, taking the reader along an emotional journey of the black people, from slavery to the present day. "To understand the complaints of the black people and why they express themselves the way they do, one would have to live and breathe the life a the black man, the black woman every day. Therefore, being privileged (born white), others could never fully comprehend the suffering and cries of the black people. However, I pray and hope this collection will give those allowed to live freely without judgment because of the color of their skin some clarity, to become a little more compassionate for the colored man." -Dawn Dean
