Book excerpt: This is the true story of three Australian soldiers, the Searle brothers. One brother was killed at Gallipoli, another on the Western Front. One came home a decorated hero. Viv, a gifted poet who was planning to be a clergyman before the war, became a deadly efficient sniper. Ray shot himself and was charged with desertion. Ned was a true Australian larrikin, up for anything, and the black sheep of the family. The Searle boys had to crack hardy, as they fought in one grueling campaign after another - from the first wave of the Gallipoli landings to Lone Pine, from Ypres to Messines and Hill 60 in Flanders, to bloody Somme battles at Mouquet Farm, Bullecourt, and Hamel, with their brothers and mates falling all around them. Back home in an Australian country town, their mother, father, sisters and remaining brother also had to crack hardy, as the bad news from the front just kept coming, and coming. Told from the heart by the Searle brothers' great-nephew, award-winning author Stephen Dando-Collins using the letters and journals of the Searle brothers and remembrances of other family members, CRACK HARDY is a compelling book that defines Australia and Australians during the making of our nation on the far-flung battlefields of the First World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to make analytical methods available to students of ecology. The text deals with concepts of energy exchange, gas exchange, and chemical kinetics involving the interactions of plants and animals with their environments. The first four chapters are designed to show the applications of biophysical ecology in a preliminary, sim plified manner. Chapters 5-10, treating the topics of radiation, convec tion, conduction, and evaporation, are concerned with the physical environment. The spectral properties of radiation and matter are thoroughly described, as well as the geometrical, instantaneous, daily, and annual amounts of both shortwave and longwave radiation. Later chapters give the more elaborate analytical methods necessary for the study of photosynthesis in plants and energy budgets in animals. The final chapter describes the temperature responses of plants and animals. The discipline of biophysical ecology is rapidly growing, and some important topics and references are not included due to limitations of space, cost, and time. The methodology of some aspects of ecology is illustrated by the subject matter of this book. It is hoped that future students of the subject will carry it far beyond its present status. Ideas for advancing the subject matter of biophysical ecology exceed individual capacities for effort, and even today, many investigators in ecology are studying subjects for which they are inadequately prepared. The potential of modern science, in the minds and hands of skilled investigators, to of the interactions of organisms with their advance our understanding environment is enormous.

Book The Australian Concise Oxford Dictionary

Download or read book The Australian Concise Oxford Dictionary written by Joan Hughes and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 1432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compact, authoritative dictionary designed especially for Australian users. Like other one-volume dictionaries it presents a selection, from the vast store of international usage, of those words which are current and relevant in the Australian context. But it does this with anauthority which no other Australian dictionary can claim. This authority has two bases, the international and the Australian. The dictionary's international authority is announced in the use of the name Oxford; its Australian authority comes from its having been fully edited at the Australian National Dictionary Centre in Canberra. Through Oxford(Australia's largest reference publishers) its editors had access to the most comprehensive database of the English language as it is used world-wide - the same database as that which forms the twenty-volume Oxford English Dictionary - and to the most recent distillation of this in the latestedition of the pace-setting Concise Oxford Dictionary. Through the Centre the dictionary's editors had access to the largest citation database of Australian English: that which forms the Australian National Dictionary. The Australian Concise Oxford Dictionary is the first product of this lineage andits publication heralds a new era in Australian lexicography. Special features include: * Completely revised Australian pronunciations, represented in IPA notation; * up-to-date Australian spellings and their alternatives; * full coverage of historical areas of Australian English - convict terms, the language of the gold rushes, exploration, settlement etc.;* up-to-date coverage of scientific and technological terminology, especially of computer terminology; * full and reliable definitions and etymologies for words of Aboriginal origin, Aboriginal English words, etc.
