Book Resistance Curve Analysis of Surface Cracks

Download or read book Resistance Curve Analysis of Surface Cracks written by HA. Ernst and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) methods are extended to study the behavior of surface cracks. The material used is a tungsten inert gas (TIG) welded 2219-aluminum alloy, welded with 2319 weld wire. Calibration and a crack-growth test were performed. A multiple specimen R-curve technique was used. A group of specimens with the same initial crack geometry was tested to different deformation values. Several different groups were considered. Crack extension as a function of position along the crack front was determined and digitized into data files. A method to estimate values of the J integral as a function of position is presented. Local resistance curves were obtained. A parameter to characterize constraint is proposed. It is only based on the elastic solution for G. It is shown that the slopes of the resistance curves are uniquely related to the constraint parameter for all cases considered.

Book The Significance of Crack resistance Curves to the Mixed mode Fracture Toughness of Human Cortical Bone

Download or read book The Significance of Crack resistance Curves to the Mixed mode Fracture Toughness of Human Cortical Bone written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 5297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of fracture mechanics studies on the toughness of bone have been performed under tensile loading. However, it has recently been shown that the toughness of human cortical bone in the transverse (breaking) orientation is actually much lower in shear (mode II) than in tension (mode I); a fact that is physiologically relevant as in vivo bone is invariably loaded multiaxially. Since bone is a material that derives its fracture resistance primarily during crack growth through extrinsic toughening mechanisms, such as crack deflection and bridging, evaluation of its toughness is best achieved through measurements of the crack-resistance or R-curve, which describes the fracture toughness as a function of crack extension. Accordingly, in this study, we attempt to measure for the first time the R-curve fracture toughness of human cortical bone under physiologically relevant mixed-mode loading conditions. We show that the resulting mixed-mode (mode I + II) toughness depends strongly on the crack trajectory and is the result of the competition between the paths of maximum mechanical driving force and 'weakest' microstructural resistance.

Book The Finite Element Method in Thermomechanics

Download or read book The Finite Element Method in Thermomechanics written by Tai-Ran Hsu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid advances in the nuclear and aerospace technologies in the past two decades compounded with the increasing demands for high performance, energy-efficient power plant components and engines have made reliable thermal stress analysis a critical factor in the design and operation of such equipment. Recently, and as experienced by the author, the need for sophis ticated analyses has been extended to the energy resource industry such as in-situ coal gasification and in-situ oil recovery from oil sands and shales. The analyses in the above applications are of a multidisciplinary nature, and some involve the additional complexity of multiphase and phase change phenomena. These extremely complicated factors preclude the use of classical methods, and numerical techniques such as the finite element method appear to be the most viable alternative solution. The development of this technique so far appears to have concentrated in two extremes; one being overly concerned with the accuracy of results and tending to place all effort in the implementation of special purpose element concepts and computational algorithms, the other being for commercial purposes with the ability of solving a wide range of engineering problems. However, to be versatile, users require substantial training and experience in order to use these codes effectively. Above all, no provision for any modifi cation of these codes by users is possible, as all these codes are proprietary and access to the code is limited only to the owners.

XXXXXXX Neuer Text Describing how ceramic materials fracture and fail under mechanical loading, this book provides methods for determining the properties of ceramics, and gives criteria for selecting ceramic materials for particular applications. It also examines the fracture-mechanical and statistical principles and their use in understanding the strength and durability of ceramics. Special chapters are devoted to creep behavior, criteria for multiaxial failure, and behavior under thermal shock. Readers will gain insight into the design of reliable ceramic components.
