This resistance is manifested by the requirement that crack growth will occur only under a rising load up to an instability load at which unstable fracture commences. If the fracture resistance curve which designates the load-crack extension relationship to instability has a unique shape for each material and is independent of most specimen dimensions, it can be a valuable tool in failure-safe design. The fracture resistance curves (R-curves) have been obtained for six high-strength sheet alloys which fractured under elastic loads. The influence of three specimen geometric variables and yield strength on the shape of the R-curve and the critical stress-intensity factor K sub c was investigated. On several alloys a comparison was made between the R-curve and K sub c value generated with a center-cracked tension (CCT) specimen and data derived from a crack-line loaded (CLL) specimen used at Armco Steel Corporation. Book excerpt: Attempts were made to: (1) devise a simple crack-propagation specimen for evaluating high-strength sheet materials, (2) determine the crack-propagation characteristics of several high-strength sheet materials, (3) determine the effects of several experimental variables on the crack-propagation characteristics of some of these materials, and (4) determine the validity of the crack-propagation specimen for predicting the biaxial strength of the high-strength sheet materials. A sheet specimen called the shear-cracked specimen with a central transverse crack or notch produced by means of a simple punch-anddie fixture was devised. The crack-propagation properties obtained with the shear-cracked specimen were very similar to those obtained with fatigue-cracked specimens of the quench-hardenable and age-hardenable materials. The sheet-type crack-propagation specimen may be useful in predicting the biaxial strength of materials heat treated to very high strength levels (in excess of about 250,000 psi). At lower nominal strength levels, the crack-propagation specimen is apparently too severe a criterion.

Book excerpt: Most aluminium-lithium (Al–Li) alloy fatigue crack growth (FCG) data have been obtained for 2nd generation alloys, specifically under constant amplitude (CA) and constant stress ratio (CR) loading, and for long/large cracks. These data show the alloys in a favourable light, but this FCG ‘advantage’ essentially disappears under realistic flight simulation loading, and is also absent for short/small cracks. Furthermore, the FCG advantage is due to inhomogeneous plastic deformation, which has undesirable consequences for other important properties. These consequences have greatly restricted the use of 2nd generation alloys in aerospace structures. FCG data for 3rd generation Al–Li alloys are becoming more available. Many of the issues associated with 2nd generation alloys have been eliminated or greatly alleviated as a result of several changes, including reduced Li contents and innovative thermomechanical processing. Consequently, the FCG behaviour of 3rd generation alloys is more similar to that of conventional alloys. Nevertheless, the 3rd generation alloys tend to have better FCG properties than equivalent conventional alloys; and these and other improvements have already led to many aircraft applications.
