Download or read book Joinery Joists and Gender written by Deirdre Visser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joinery, Joists and Gender: A History of Woodworking for the 21st Century is the first publication of its kind to survey the long and rich histories of women and gender non-conforming persons who work in wood. Written for craft practitioners, design students, and readers interested in the intersections of gender and labor history—with 200 full-color images, both historical and contemporary—this book provides an accessible and insightful entry into the histories, practices, and lived experiences of women and nonbinary makers in woodworking. In the first half the author presents a woodworking history primarily in Europe and the United States that highlights the practical and philosophical issues that have marked women’s participation in the field. Research focuses on a diverse range of practitioners from Lady Yun to Adina White. This is followed by sixteen in-depth profiles of contemporary woodworkers, all of whom identify fine woodworking as their principal vocation. Through studio visits, interviews, and photographs of space and process, the book uncovers the varied practices and contributions these diverse artisans make to the understanding of wood as a medium to engage spatial, material, aesthetic, and even existential challenges. Beautifully illustrated profiles include Wendy Maruyama, one of the first women to earn an MFA in woodworking in the US; Sarah Marriage, founder of Baltimore’s A Workshop of Our Own, a woodshop and educational space specifically for women and gender non-conforming makers; Yuri Kobayashi, whose sublime work blurs boundaries between the worlds of art and craft, sculpture, and furniture; and Folayemi Wilson, whose work draws equally on African American history and Afrofuturism to explore and illuminate the ways that furniture and wood traditions shape social relations.
Download or read book Conducting Clinical Trials written by Frank L. Iber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago, two of us joined our senior colleague at Pharma Kinetics Laboratories, a newly public contract research firm just under taking a major expansion into the clinical trials market. The company's unique concept of clinical research held great promise and had suc cessfully endured many of the fits and starts characteristic of entrepre neurial organizations. With a staff of highly enthusiastic, albeit inex perienced, field personnel located in 30-odd cities around the country, we found ourselves off and running with several critical research pro grams for major pharmaceutical manufacturers. Our excitement with the innovation was tempered with the reality of staffing and bearing responsibility for more than 30 field offices and 300 new staff persons, more than half of whom had no previous experience in the pharma ceutical industry. In the ensuing few years, we explored by trial and error many workable and unworkable patterns of training! delegation, data collec tion, and auditing. The ideas expressed in this book benefited greatly from that experience and from the willingness of our co-workers and clients to share insights and problems. During those years, we also sought guidance from the works available on the clinical trials field. Although we found numerous references on research ethics, little guid ance was available on the practical aspects of conducting a clinical trial.
Download or read book Research Methods for Community Change A Project Based Approach written by Randy Stoecker and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2013 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Methods for Community Change: A Project-Based Approach, Second Edition is an in-depth review of all of the research methods that communities can use to solve problems, develop their resources, protect their identities, and build power. With an engaging writing style and numerous real world examples, Randy Stoecker shows how to use a project-based research model in the community to: diagnose a community condition; prescribe an intervention for the condition; implement the prescription; and evaluate its impact. At every stage of this model there are research tasks, from needs and assets assessments to process and outcome studies. Readers also learn the importance of involving community members at every stage of the project and in every aspect of the research, making the research part of the community-building process.
