Book Investigating the Role of Coyotes Canis Latrans in the Spread of Parasites and Arthropod borne Diseases in Georgia USA

Download or read book Investigating the Role of Coyotes Canis Latrans in the Spread of Parasites and Arthropod borne Diseases in Georgia USA written by Ansleigh Banks and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: In order to analyze the role of coyotes, Canis latrans, as hosts of parasites and arthropod-borne diseases in the state of Georgia, USA, 38 coyotes representing 18 counties and multiple geographic regions of the state were dissected and analyzed for the presence of Dirofilaria immitis, intestinal parasites, ectoparasites, and tick-borne illnesses. Mosquitoes from the locations which the coyotes originated were trapped and analyzed for the presence of D. immitis larvae. In compliance with IACUC guidelines, coyotes were obtained from individuals who had previously hunted or trapped the coyotes for leisure. Parasites were identified based on morphological features with the use of dichotomous and pictorial keys. A total of 1086 parasites were collected: 215 intestinal nematodes, 116 cestodes, 1 acanthocephalan, 359 filarial nematodes, 128 ticks, 10 fleas, and 257 lice. Of the 38 coyotes examined, 21 had adult D. immitis present, 30 had adult parasites or ova present, and 19 had ticks present. Trends in prevalence and burden of parasites among different regions of the state, and different sexes, ages, and sizes of coyotes were analyzed. Three specimens had no parasite of any form present (7.89%), while 11 of the specimens were found to be affected by heartworms, intestinal parasites, and ectoparasites (28.94%). Of 30 specimens analyzed for exposure to tick-borne illness with the SNAP 4dx ELISA test, 10 were found to have been exposed to Ehrlichia canis or Ehrlichia ewingii (33%), and 1 was found to have been exposed to Borrelia burgdorferi (3.33%). Gravid trapping of mosquitoes yielded specimens belonging to 7 species which are vectors of D. immitis. Two mosquitoes were suspected to be infected with D. immitis larvae; however, molecular detection methods must be performed to confirm this. The results of this study provide a more diverse record of parasitism and arthropod-borne diseases in Georgia's coyote population as samples were taken from as many different locations throughout the state as possible. This study found coyotes to be wildlife hosts and modes of transportation for parasites which can negatively affect the health of both humans and domestic animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parasites are major players in structuring communities and regulating their host populations, making them integral parts of any ecosystem. However, little knowledge exists on how parasites contribute to the biomass and biodiversity of urban systems. In this study we map the presence of macro- and microparasites in coyotes (Canis latrans) in the Los Angeles area and explore the within-host co-occurrence patterns of the parasites identified in this region. This is the first study to characterize the parasite community and demonstrate the key impacts of urbanization on parasitism in southern California coyotes. We found that parasite presence is significantly influenced by urbanization measures, suggesting that parasites are absent from highly urbanized spaces due to differences in abiotic and biotic factors that govern the ecology of hosts and the survival of parasites. This work demonstrates the importance of studying parasites and emphasizes the insights they provide on the health of urban ecosystems.

Book A Survey for Echinococcus Multilocularis in Coyotes and Foxes in Michigan

Download or read book A Survey for Echinococcus Multilocularis in Coyotes and Foxes in Michigan written by Julie Rose Melotti and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echinococcus multilocularis is a parasitic tapeworm with the potential to cause serious disease and even death in humans. The minute worm uses a rodent intermediate host and canid definitive host to complete its life cycle and humans can become accidentally infected through exposure to infective eggs. Echinococcus multilocularis had been identified in the north central portion of the United States, including Michigan and nearby states in the early 1990's; however little is known about current prevalence and distribution. In this study, 302 coyotes, gray foxes and red foxes collected from hunters, trappers, fur buyers and state and federal agencies in Michigan were examined for presence of the parasite. Echinococcus multilocularis was identified in 1/219 (0.46%) coyotes from the southwestern Lower Peninsula. The parasite was not identified in any of the red or gray foxes examined. Data generated in this study provides a greater understanding of the spatial distribution of the parasite, provides a baseline with which future research can be compared, and can be used to assess the level of risk to humans in the state. Although the prevalence in wild canids in Michigan appears to be low, the risk of encountering the parasite does exist and those handling wild canids are encouraged to take precautions to prevent exposure. -- Abstract.

Book A Comparative Ecological Study Between Coyotes Canis Latrans in a Protected and Urban Habitat

Download or read book A Comparative Ecological Study Between Coyotes Canis Latrans in a Protected and Urban Habitat written by Denara Lynn Manning and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Coyotes (Canis latrans) have inhabited Florida (USA) since the 1960s and are currently found throughout the state. The purpose of the present study was to obtain information on enteric parasites and diet of Florida coyotes from two different habitat types. Seasonal variation in diet was also examined. Fresh coyote fecal samples were collected from protected and urban habitats in Pinellas County, Florida (USA; 27°54' n, 82°41'w) from may 2005 to march 2007. A standard fecal flotation examination and formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation were utilized on fecal samples collected from the protected (n=40) and urban (n=50) habitats. Five novel (newly documented) parasites of coyotes were discovered; one cestode (Hymenolepis spp.), one nematode (Ascaris spp.), and three protozoa (Balantidium coli, Blastocystis spp., and Entamoeba histolytica). Novel parasites of Florida coyotes were also discovered two cestodes (diphyllobothrium latum and dipylidium caninum), two nematodes (toxocara canis and uncinaria stenocephala), one trematode (paragonimus spp.), and four protozoa (cryptosporidium spp., giardia canis, isospora spp., and sarcocystis cruzi). One cestode (Taenia spp.), three nematodes (Ancylostoma caninum, Physaloptera spp., and Trichurus vulpis), and one trematode (Alaria spp.) were also recovered, all of which have previously been documented in Florida coyotes. Diet items were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level by gross morphological characteristics and medullary configurations of dorsal guard hairs. A poisson regression was utilized to determine the relation between diet items and habitat, season, and interaction. In the protected habitat (n=49), vegetative matter (96%), Insecta (53%), and Rodentia (45%) were recovered most often, as opposed to berries (56%) and Lagomorpha (32%) in the urban habitats (n=71). Overall, vegetative matter, berries, and Lagomorpha were recovered most often from Florida coyote fecal samples. Odocoileus virginianus, Lagomorpha, and berries varied the most between wet and dry seasons. It is suggested that Florida coyotes are more susceptible to reinfection by novel parasites because of their rapid range expansion and lack of acquired immunity. Rapid habitat loss in Florida (i.e., urbanization) lowers survival of adult coyotes, increases the probability of transmission of disease between wild and domestic canids, and alters the diet of coyotes by lowering biological diversity of available prey items.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of its central situation in the Eastern United States and the variety of habitats to be found within its borders, Kentucky has an interesting mixture of mammals, including some characteristic of the Deep South, the West, and the North. All 63 species native to the state are described and illustrated in this volume, the fifth in a series of guides to the wildlife of Kentucky. The book is conveniently arranged by orders, families, and species, and identification is facilitated by illustrated keys and by a series of dramatic color photographs. In the account of each species, the authors describe its distinguishing features, similar species with which it might be confused, its habitat, range, characteristic behavior, and life history. Much of the information in these accounts is drawn from the authors' personal observation of the animals in the wild and, in some cases, in captivity.
