Book Hopi Traditional Literature

Download or read book Hopi Traditional Literature written by David Leedom Shaul and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique study of Hopi discourse, an anthropologist describes the major public forms of Hopi discourse using a Hopi typology. That is, he describes from a Hopi viewpoint the structures of narratives, songs, songpoems, and direct address forms such as oration, prayer, and conversation. In addition to categories like versification, which are comparable to the building blocks of literature in English, he looks at distinctively Hopi genre signatures and evaluative concepts. Not only does he consider the structural characteristics of each genre, but he also relates the genres to contextual and cultural factors. Examples are presented in bilingual format, and musical notation of several Hopi songs is included. Although the book will be of interest to scholars in linguistics, ethnopoetics, discourse analysis, and performance theory, the author does not assume extensive knowledge of these fields or of the Hopi language on the part of his reader. He includes a pronunciation guide, a technical glossary, and a sketch of Hopi grammar.

Book Recovering the Word

Download or read book Recovering the Word written by Brian Swann and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays by linguists, folklorists, anthropologists, literary theorists, and poets, bring to a new level of sophistication the structural analysis of Native American literary expression. Their common concern is for the appreciation and elucidation of Native American song and story, and for a historical, philosophical, psychoanalytic, and linguistic kind of commentary. The essays address the overlapping issues of presentation and interpretation of Native American literature: How to present in writing an art that is primarily oral, dramatic, and performative? How to interpret that art, both in its traditional forms and in its later, written forms. ISBN 0-520-05790-2: $60.00.

Book Now I Know Only So Far

Download or read book Now I Know Only So Far written by Dell H. Hymes and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Now I Know Only So Far, sociolinguist and ethnopoetic scholar Dell Hymes examines the power and significance of Native North American literatures and how they can best be approached and appreciated. Such narratives, Hymes argues, are ways of making sense of the world. To truly comprehend the importance and durability of these narratives, one must investigate the ways of thinking expressed in these texts?the cultural sensibilities also deeply affected by storytellers? particular experiences and mastery of form. ø Included here are seminal overviews and reflections on the history and potential of the field of ethnopoetics. Native North American stories from areas ranging from the Northwest Coast to the Southwest take center stage in this book, which features careful scrutiny of different realizations and tellings of the same story or related stories. Such narratives are illuminated through a series of verse analyses in which patterned relations of lines throw into relief differences in emphasis, shape, and interpretation. A final group of essays sheds light on the often misunderstood and always controversial role of editing and interpreting texts. Now I Know Only So Far provides penetrating discussions and absorbing insights into stories and worlds, both traditional and new.

Book In Search of Meadowlarks Birds Farms and Food in Harmony with the Land

Download or read book In Search of Meadowlarks Birds Farms and Food in Harmony with the Land written by John M. Marzluff and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ornithologist's personal look at farming practices that finds practical solutions for sustainable food production compatible with bird and wildlife conservation With predictions of a human population of more than nine billion by the middle of this century and eleven billion by 2100, we stand at a crossroads in our agricultural evolution. In this clear and engaging yet scientifically rigorous book, wildlife biologist John M. Marzluff takes a personal approach to sustainable agriculture. He travels to farms and ranches across North and Central America, including a Nebraska corn and soybean farm, California vineyards, cattle ranches in Montana, and small sustainable farms in Costa Rica, to understand the unique challenges and solutions to sustainable food production. Agriculture and wildlife can coexist, Marzluff argues, if farmers are justly rewarded for conservation; if future technological advancements increase food production and reduce food waste; and if consumers cut back on meat consumption. Beginning with a look backward at our evolutionary history and concluding with practical solutions for change that will benefit farmers and ranchers, he provides an accessible and insightful study for the ecologically minded citizen, farmer, rancher, or conservationist.
