Book excerpt: The creatures of legend have come upon hard times. Their power stems from human belief, but humans believe in "Science" now. We have little use for magic. Even Coyote - shiftiest and most adaptable of them all - can't quite comprehend this new view of reality. He refuses to accept defeat, however, and devises a plan to have himself reborn without memories so that he can grow up within our contemporary culture, and fully understand our way of thinking. And where would Coyote go for formative guidance, anyway? Why, a commune, of course. Sunbow Farms, to be precise. It's peaceful, wild, and very private. Very private indeed. Marijuana plantations are like that. So the Narks have come and raided his new home - Coyote can deal with that. And there's the flood, of course, and trigger-happy coyote-blasting neighbors, and troublemaking by Coyote's magical Spirit Pups ... all no problem. Even local prejudice against his all-too-coyotish appearance can be dealt with, somehow. It's those death threats from Fox that are hard to take. How can Fox say that Coyote needs to be killed for his own good? That just doesn't make sense.

Download or read book I Am Coyote written by Geri Vistein and published by Tilbury House Publishers and Cadent Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-09 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coyote is three years old when she leaves her family in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario and embarks on a 500-mile odyssey eastward in search of a territory of her own and a mate to share it with. Journeying by night through the dead of winter, she endures extreme cold, hunger, and a harrowing crossing of the St. Lawrence River in Montreal before her cries of loneliness are finally answered in the wilds of Maine. The mate she finds must gnaw off a paw to escape a trap. The first coyotes in the northern U.S., they raise pups (losing several), experience summer plenty, winter hardship, playfulness, and unmistakable love and grief. Blending science and imagination with magical results, this story tells how coyotes may have populated a land desperately in need of a keystone predator, and no one who reads it will doubt the value of their ecological role. Told through the eyes of a coyote, this is a riveting story with mythic dimensions. A work of creative nonfiction that adheres to the highest standards of wildlife biology. With deep insights into wild canine behavior, penetrates the veil of “otherness” that separates us from the animals with whom we share the planet. An appendix explores the history and current status of coyotes in North America. Native Americans considered them tricksters, messengers, and companions. Given the disappearance of wolves, they are even more critical to ecosystem health today. The author explains how, without coyotes, prey species are weakened by disease and parasites. Geri Vistein speaks extensively about coyote-human interactions to a variety of audiences. She is a nationally recognized expert on the topic and maintains the website CoyoteLivesInMaine.com. A QR code in the book takes readers to a hauntingly beautiful recording of coyote song.

Book Cycles Sequels Spin offs Remakes and Reboots

Download or read book Cycles Sequels Spin offs Remakes and Reboots written by Amanda Ann Klein and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With sequels, prequels, remakes, spin-offs, or copies of successful films or franchises dominating film and television production, it sometimes seems as if Hollywood is incapable of making an original film or TV show. These textual pluralities or multiplicities—while loved by fans who flock to them in droves—tend to be dismissed by critics and scholars as markers of the death of high culture. Cycles, Sequels, Spin-offs, Remakes, and Reboots takes the opposite view, surveying a wide range of international media multiplicities for the first time to elucidate their importance for audiences, industrial practices, and popular culture. The essays in this volume offer a broad picture of the ways in which cinema and television have used multiplicities to streamline the production process, and to capitalize on and exploit viewer interest in previously successful and/or sensational story properties. An impressive lineup of established and emerging scholars talk seriously about forms of multiplicity that are rarely discussed as such, including direct-to-DVD films made in Nigeria, cross-cultural Japanese horror remakes, YouTube fan-generated trailer mash-ups, and 1970s animal revenge films. They show how considering the particular bonds that tie texts to one another allows us to understand more about the audiences for these texts and why they crave a version of the same story (or character or subject) over and over again. These findings demonstrate that, far from being lowbrow art, multiplicities are actually doing important cultural work that is very worthy of serious study.
