Book excerpt: This is an old-fashioned western story about stout-hearted men and women who run their business in the conditions of the Johnson County Cattle War (JCCW) that took place in northeastern Wyoming in the 1890s. The book gives an interesting historical account of the events, and therefore, it will be especially valuable to anyone interested in the history of the real west.

Book excerpt: Cowmen and Rustlers By Edward Sylvester Ellis Cowmen and Rustlers By Edward Sylvester Ellis Edward Sylvester Ellis was a major American author during the era of inexpensive fiction of the nineteenth century (dime novels). Because he wrote under dozens of pseudonyms, as well as under his own name, it is virtually impossible to know exactly how many books he wrote, but it is believed to be in the hundreds. He specialized in boys' stories, inspirational biography, and history for both children and adults. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: A MERRY GROUP. The Whitney household, in the western part of Maine, was filled with sunshine, merriment and delight, on a certain winter evening a few years ago. There was the quiet, thoughtful mother, now past her prime, but with many traces of the beauty and refinement that made her the belle of the little country town until Hugh Whitney, the strong-bearded soldier, who had entered the war as private and emerged therefrom with several wounds and with the eagles of a colonel on his shoulder, carried her away from all admirers and made her his bride. Hugh had been absent a couple of weeks in Montana and Wyoming, whither he was drawn by a yearning of many years' standing to engage in the cattle business. He had received some tuition as a cowboy on the Llano Estacada, and the taste there acquired of the free, wild life, supplemented, doubtless, by his experience during the war, was held in restraint for a time only by his marriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Sylvester Ellis (April 11, 1840 - June 20, 1916) was an American author who was born in Ohio and died at Cliff Island, Maine. Ellis was a teacher, school administrator, journalist, and the author of hundreds of books and magazine articlesthat he produced by his name and by a number of noms de plume. Notable fiction stories by Ellis include The Steam Man of the Prairies and Seth Jones, or the Captives of the Frontier.Internationally, Edward S. Ellis is probably known best for his Deerfoot novels read widely by young boys until the 1950s.Seth Jones was the most significant of early dime novels of publishers Beadle and Adams. It is said that Seth Jones was one of Abraham Lincoln's favorite stories. During the mid-1880s, after a fiction-writing career of some thirty years, Ellis eventually began composing more serious works of biography, history, and persuasive writing. Of note was "The Life of Colonel David Crockett," which had the story of Davy Crockett giving a speech usually called "Not Yours To Give." It was a speech in opposition to awarding money to a Navy widow on the grounds that Congress had no Constitutional mandate to give charity. It was said to have been inspired by Crockett's meeting with a Horatio Bunce, a much quoted man in Libertarian circles, but one for whom historical evidence is non-existent.

Book The Trampling Herd The Story of the Cattle Range in America

Download or read book The Trampling Herd The Story of the Cattle Range in America written by Paul I. Wellman and published by Rare Treasure Editions. This book was released on 2021-11-10T15:03:00Z with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trampling Herd is a record of the US cattle industry. From Cortez and the first cattle, on through the days of the Mexican vaquero to the modern cowbody and dude wrangler, Paul Wellman traced the history and personalities of the Western cattle country. He showed the changing West, dating from the barbed wire fences and the sheepmen, the new laws regarding water rights and he brings his tale down to the last ignominy, the dude ranches. Cattle crossed the Rio Grande into what is now the United States as early as 1580, forty years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. In this colorful and comprehensive history of the cattle industry in the American West, we reach back to the early sixteenth century, when the first cattle were brought from Spain to Mexico. We then learn about the great cattle drives that began after the Civil War when Texans desperately needed to expand their markets, and about the dramatic changes in the cattle industry that followed. Colorful true characters like the unforgettable Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Wild Bill Hickok, and Billy the Kid also all make prominent appearances in this fascinating history.

Download or read book The Frontier Club written by Christine Bold and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Hollywood films to novels by Louis L'Amour and television series like Gunsmoke and Deadwood, the Wild West has exerted a powerful hold on the cultural imagination of the United States. Beginning with Theodore Roosevelt's founding of the Boone and Crockett Club in 1887, Christine Bold traces the origins and evolution of the western genre, revealing how a group of prominent eastern aristocrats-a cadre she terms "the frontier club" -created and propagated the myth of the Wild West to advance their own self-interest as well as larger systems of privilege and exclusion. Mining institutional archives, personal papers, novels, and films, The Frontier Club excavates the hidden social, political, and financial interests behind the making of the modern western. It re-reads frontier-club fiction, most notably Owen Wister's bestseller The Virginian, in relation to federal policies and cultural spaces (from exclusive gentlemen's clubs to national parks to zoos); it casts new light on key clubmen, both the famous and the forgotten-figures such as Roosevelt, George Bird Grinnell, Silas Weir Mitchell, Henry Cabot Lodge, and Frederic Remington-while recovering the women on whom these men depended and without whom this version of the popular West would not exist; and it considers the costs of the frontier-club formula, in terms of its impact on Indigenous peoples and its marginalization of other popular voices, including western writings by African Americans, women, and working-class white men. An engaging cultural history that covers print culture, big-game hunting, politics, immigration, Jim Crow segregation, and environmental conservation at the turn of the twentieth century, The Frontier Club provides a welcome new perspective on the enduring American myth of the Wild West.
