Book excerpt: Cowee Creek watershed, located near Juneau in Southeast Alaska, supports a number of anadromous fish species. Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish selected Cowee Creek as a candidate water body for a reservation of water. In order to collect the data necessary to file a reservation of water application, a streamgage was operated on Cowee Creek from May 23, 2007, to October 5, 2012. Streamflow data collected at the streamgage was used to prepare a reservation of water application to reserve instream flows in one reach of Cowee Creek. The application was filed using two years of preliminary data and was accepted by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and given a priority date of December 11, 2009. After 5 years of streamflow data were collected and analyzed, updated streamflow statistics and instream flow requests were submitted to and accepted by DNR on January 30, 2013. The application was adjudicated in 2015 and certificates of reservation were issued for one reach of Cowee Creek. The mean annual discharge of the river measured at the streamgage averaged 283 ft3/s. The median monthly discharge ranged from 46 ft3/s in March to 450 ft3/s in September.
