Book excerpt: Quietly, the man opened the door. He was the only one that entered into the parsonage, his boys all waited outside. When he entered the room, fear gripped him. The Reverend Father was already asleep. He tiptoed to his bedside to have a clearer view. The priest was indeed fast asleep. He resembled a dead man, he thought within himself. Just then, he heard noise coming from the window area. He quickly moved near the window to check what was happening. He raised the curtain slightly and discovered it was one of his boys, already dismantling the window by first removing the louvers. He motioned for him to stop. But the boy kept removing the louvers, but this time, he did it more quietly. As he made to turn back, he was faced by the nozzle of a gun. It was Father Willoughby. The noise at the window had awoken him. He had watched as the man briskly moved to that direction and the encounter with his boy outside and had used the opportunity to grab his gun under his pillow. Jesus! he exclaimed. You! Oh my god . . . !

A superb job in a difficult area." -- Angus Kress Gillespie, Journal of American History "A major contribution to the folklore and popular culture, history, and social psychology of American cowboy culture." -- Kenneth S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bobby, tell us a cowboy story!" Bobby Holbrook had been writing poems that he shared with friends, but he didn't really know any cowboy stories, except for the Louis- Louis Lamour books he enjoyed as a kid. Then, he remembered how his squad in Vietnam had called street gangs in villages around their basecamp, "cowboys." So, he started to write, reflecting on his buddies and the secret missions of Delta Company, 51st Infantry. He had never spoken a word to anyone about his time in Vietnam, and these stories became a kind of therapy, unknowingly releasing 35 years of pent-up emotions and memories, both good and bad. Come along as Delta Company explore Buddha Mountain, save Sue Lynn from the cowboys, get into wild barfights straight out of the old westerns, go on a rescue mission to find a downed chopper pilot - before the enemy does, assist a team of Navy Seals on a covert operation that could possibly bring an end to the war and search for a black market bandit, who may even be one of their own. Also, is Lucky just, Lucky? Or is there a heavenly presence protecting him?

Book The Compton Cowboys

Download or read book The Compton Cowboys written by Walter Thompson-Hernandez and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Thompson-Hernández's portrayal of Compton's black cowboys broadens our perception of Compton's young black residents, and connects the Compton Cowboys to the historical legacy of African Americans in the west. An eye-opening, moving book.”—Margot Lee Shetterly, New York Times bestselling author of Hidden Figures “Walter Thompson-Hernández has written a book for the ages: a profound and moving account of what it means to be black in America that is awe inspiring in its truth-telling and limitless in its empathy. Here is an American epic of black survival and creativity, of terrible misfortune and everyday resilience, of grace, redemption and, yes, cowboys.”— Junot Díaz, Pulitzer prize-winning author of This is How You Lose Her A rising New York Times reporter tells the compelling story of The Compton Cowboys, a group of African-American men and women who defy stereotypes and continue the proud, centuries-old tradition of black cowboys in the heart of one of America’s most notorious cities. In Compton, California, ten black riders on horseback cut an unusual profile, their cowboy hats tilted against the hot Los Angeles sun. They are the Compton Cowboys, their small ranch one of the very last in a formerly semirural area of the city that has been home to African-American horse riders for decades. To most people, Compton is known only as the home of rap greats NWA and Kendrick Lamar, hyped in the media for its seemingly intractable gang violence. But in 1988 Mayisha Akbar founded The Compton Jr. Posse to provide local youth with a safe alternative to the streets, one that connected them with the rich legacy of black cowboys in American culture. From Mayisha’s youth organization came the Cowboys of today: black men and women from Compton for whom the ranch and the horses provide camaraderie, respite from violence, healing from trauma, and recovery from incarceration. The Cowboys include Randy, Mayisha’s nephew, faced with the daunting task of remaking the Cowboys for a new generation; Anthony, former drug dealer and inmate, now a family man and mentor, Keiara, a single mother pursuing her dream of winning a national rodeo championship, and a tight clan of twentysomethings--Kenneth, Keenan, Charles, and Tre--for whom horses bring the freedom, protection, and status that often elude the young black men of Compton. The Compton Cowboys is a story about trauma and transformation, race and identity, compassion, and ultimately, belonging. Walter Thompson-Hernández paints a unique and unexpected portrait of this city, pushing back against stereotypes to reveal an urban community in all its complexity, tragedy, and triumph. The Compton Cowboys is illustrated with 10-15 photographs.

Book excerpt: It’s autumn in Big Sky Country, and crash-landed aliens are falling in love! Deltas were always the most expendable among the CWBOIs (Custom War Bionic/Organic Impersons), and Delta V was fifth of nothing. But since the crash that left this transgalactically prohibited private army of cyborg alien warriors marooned on Earth, Delta has found some small pleasures — soft dogs, sweet donuts, seducing the neighboring rancher. Wait, what? For the first time in her fifty years, Big Sky Country is feeling small and lonely to Montana rancher Lindy Minervudottir. With the five-year anniversary of her wife’s death looming, she’s not sure if the future matters. But then a futuristic fighter flies into her life. Earth is a small, blue marble in the vastness of space, and two needy hearts are even smaller than quarks at that scale. But with a long-gone enemy closing in, if quantum entanglement and the irresistible force of love can’t bind them together, the world itself hangs in the balance. On the outskirts of the Big Sky Intergalactic Dating Agency, the Cyborg Cowboys of Carbon County are rounding up earthly pleasures for their forever mates. ______________ If you like: Firefly Star Wars Star Trek Battlestar Galactica, SFR sci-fi-rom sci-fi romance, cyborg rancher military heroes, older heroine 50+, small town Montana alien romance, first love virgin hero sexy hot happily ever after!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2019 National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Western Heritage Award for the Best Nonfiction Book Winner, 2019 Colorado Book Awards History Category, sponsored by Colorado Center for the Book In The Woolly West, historian Andrew Gulliford describes the sheep industry’s place in the history of Colorado and the American West. Tales of cowboys and cattlemen dominate western history—and even more so in popular culture. But in the competition for grazing lands, the sheep industry was as integral to the history of the American West as any trail drive. With vivid, elegant, and reflective prose, Gulliford explores the origins of sheep grazing in the region, the often-violent conflicts between the sheep and cattle industries, the creation of national forests, and ultimately the segmenting of grazing allotments with the passage of the Taylor Grazing Act of 1934. Deeper into the twentieth century, Gulliford grapples with the challenges of ecological change and the politics of immigrant labor. And in the present day, as the public lands of the West are increasingly used for recreation, conflicts between hikers and dogs guarding flocks are again putting the sheep industry on the defensive. Between each chapter, Gulliford weaves an account of his personal interaction with what he calls the “sheepscape”—that is, the sheepherders’ landscape itself. Here he visits with Peruvian immigrant herders and Mormon families who have grazed sheep for generations, explores delicately balanced stone cairns assembled by shepherds now long gone, and ponders the meaning of arborglyphs carved into unending aspen forests. The Woolly West is the first book in decades devoted to the sheep industry and breaks new ground in the history of the Colorado Basque, Greek, and Hispano shepherding families whose ranching legacies continue to the present day.

Book Race Gender and Identity in American Equine Art

Download or read book Race Gender and Identity in American Equine Art written by Jessica Dallow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces an evolution of equine and equestrian art in the United States over the last two centuries to counter conventional understandings of subjects that are deeply enmeshed in the traditions of elite English and European culture. In focusing on the construction of identity in painting and photography—of Blacks, women, and the animals themselves involved in horseracing, rodeo, and horse show competition—it illuminates the strategic and varying roles visual artists have played in producing cultural understandings of human-animal relationships. As the first book to offer a history of American equine and equestrian imagery, it shrinks the chasm of literature on the subject and illustrates the significance of the genre to the history of American art. This book further connects American equine and equestrian art to historical, theoretical, and philosophical analyses of animals and attests to how the horse endures as a vital, meaningful subject within the art world as well as culture at large. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, American art, gender studies, race and ethnic studies, and animal studies.
