Book Western Art of the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Western Art of the Twenty First Century written by E. Ashley Rooney and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in a two-volume survey, readers are invited to re-examine the history of the West and its art through a multi-faceted contemporary lens. More than 40 artists are included who reflect the tremendous diversity, depth, and breadth of a field steeped in history. While some follow the traditions established by Remington and Russell, others seek to break from tradition, busting myths and bringing new insights and artistic styles to the genre. They come from both sides of the Mississippi and have pedigrees that range from bona fide cowboy or Native American credentials to careers in commercial illustration. The unifying theme is a common concern for and commitment to their art and the West itself. In this volume, contemporary artists are featured whose work revolves around the American Cowboy. Within these pages, many different artists, some of whom have been cowboys themselves, exhibit their rendition of the wonderful world of the West.

When these two men-hungry pals spend a summer evening at a bar called Cowboy Up!, things start out smooth. Taylor’s on the hunt for easy prey, and Bear meets an interesting cowboy painter named Welsey Westward, whom he calls West. Like most of Bear’s evenings on the town, things become chaotic after a few too many drinks. Taylor becomes easy, and Bear loses his temper. Soon a brawl begins at the bar, and Bear and Taylor end up leaving early. As if things can’t get any worse, they get into an argument on their drive home, and Taylor dumps Bear off in the middle of nowhere. Great! What’s he going to do now? Enter West, again. The painter finds Bear stranded on a back road, picks him up, and takes him back to his cabin. An attraction builds between the two cowboys and lust transpires, risqué paintings are revealed, secrets unfold, and mistakes occur. If only time could be reversed and tonight wouldn’t have happened ...

Book The American West in Bronze 1850 1925

Download or read book The American West in Bronze 1850 1925 written by Thayer Tolles and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2013 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Themes of the American West have been enduringly popular, and 'The American West in Bronze' features sixty-five iconic bronzes that display a range of subjects, from portrayals of the noble Indian to rough-and-tumble scenes of rowdy cowboys to tributes to the pioneers who settled the lands west of the Mississippi. Fascinating texts offer a fresh look at the roles that artists played in creating interpretations of the "vanishing West"--Whether based on fact, fiction or something in-between. These artists, including Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington, embody a range of life experiences and artistic approaches."'The American West in Bronze, 1850-1925' is the first full-scale exhibition to explore the aesthetic and cultural impulses behind the creation of statuettes with American western themes, which have been so popular with audiences then and now. Both the exhibition and this accompanying catalogue offer a fresh look at the multifaceted roles played by these sculptors in creating three-dimensional interpretations of western life, whether based on historical fact, mythologized fiction, or most often, something in-between. Examples by such archetypal representatives of the West as Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell are complemented by the work of sculptors such as James Earle Fraser and Paul Manship, who contributed to the popularity of the American bronze statuette even though their western subjects were less frequent."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of working cowhands and their horses loom large in the mind’s eye of many who love the American West. Those same images form the heart and soul of this lavishly illustrated book, which captures the viewpoints, values, and observations of twenty-four respected contemporary artists. The artists’ own words illuminate the painting, sculpture, photography, and drawings of these award-winning, supremely creative individuals, allowing readers a glimpse into their creative processes. As Heidi Brady and Scott White demonstrate, these Western artists came to their work in a wide variety of ways. Some are studio-trained and learned to portray horses through formal classes; others simply began creating art on their own, learning through visual and tactile study of the horses they worked with each day. The two dozen artists profiled here include ranch owners, working hands, professional photographers, rodeo cowboys, art instructors, graphic designers, a saddle maker, and a former predator hunter. Readers will delight in these remarkable paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures depicting the freedom and spirit of the American West.

Book Richard Prince

Download or read book Richard Prince written by Richard Prince and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A visually stunning compilation of Richard Prince's 40-year-long project of examining the cowboy as an American symbol. In the mid-1970s, Richard Prince was an aspiring painter working in Time Inc.'s tear sheet department clipping texts for magazine writers. After he removed the articles, he was left with advertisements: glossy pictures of commodities, models, and other objects of desire. He began to re-photograph the advertisements, cropping and enlarging them, and selling the artworks as his own. Prince paid particular attention to the motif of the cowboy, often depicted in advertisements for Marlboro cigarettes. He had an explosive effect on the art world, provoking lawsuits and setting auction records for contemporary photography. More recently, he has revisited copies of TIME from the 1980s and 90s using contemporary technology to produce a new series of work, extending his preoccupation with the cowboy in the era of Instagram to demonstrate that the stakes around originality, appropriation, and truth in advertising are as high as ever. This book showcases how Prince has mined the mythological American West within the artwork he produced during the last four decades. Each chapter contains a brief introduction, followed by artwork by Prince, and concludes with a section of related ephemera, relics, and fragments that aid in contextualizing Prince's work. Once again challenging the conventional limits of photography, Prince is reigniting the debate he sparked forty years ago through the lens of cowboys and the West.
