Book Cowboy is a Verb

Download or read book Cowboy is a Verb written by Richard Collins and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the big picture to the smallest detail, Richard Collins fashions a rousing memoir about the modern-day lives of cowboys and ranchers. However, Cowboy is a Verb is much more than wild horse rides and cattle chases. While Collins recounts stories of quirky ranch horses, cranky cow critters, cow dogs, and the people who use and care for them, he also paints a rural West struggling to survive the onslaught of relentless suburbanization. A born storyteller with a flair for words, Collins breathes life into the geology, history, and interdependency of land, water, and native and introduced plants and animals. He conjures indelible portraits of the hardworking, dedicated people he comes to know. With both humor and humility, he recounts the day-to-day challenges of ranch life such as how to build a productive herd, distribute your cattle evenly across a rough and rocky landscape, and establish a grazing system that allows pastures enough time to recover. He also intimately recounts a battle over the endangered Gila topminnow and how he and his neighbors worked with university range scientists, forest service conservationists, and funding agencies to improve their ranches as well as the ecological health of the Redrock Canyon watershed. Ranchers who want to stay in the game don’t dominate the landscape; instead, they have to continually study the land and the animals it supports. Collins is a keen observer of both. He demonstrates that patience, resilience, and a common-sense approach to conservation and range management are what counts, combined with an enduring affection for nature, its animals, and the land. Cowboy is a Verb is not a romanticized story of cowboy life on the range, rather it is a complex story of the complicated work involved with being a rancher in the twenty-first-century West.

Book Nebraska s Cowboy Rail Line

Download or read book Nebraska s Cowboy Rail Line written by Keith Terry and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nebraska's Cowboy Line existed for nearly 125 years and covered more than 400 miles as it made its way across the northern portion of the state. The construction of the rail line, which started in 1869, was the impetus for the establishment of many towns, and even the relocation of some, along the route. The line was employed to transport miners to the Black Hills during the gold rush of the late 1800s, it carried thousands of Irish and German immigrants to the largely unsettled area, and it allowed politicians to meet their constituents. It also was used to deliver necessities, amusements, technology, and new innovations to the state's citizenry.

Book The Oklahoma Cowboy Band

Download or read book The Oklahoma Cowboy Band written by Carla Chlouber and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-08-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oklahoma Cowboy Band was the first western string band in the nation to broadcast over the radio and appear on vaudeville, drawing large audiences throughout the Midwest and Northeast. The band began in Ripley as Billy McGinty's Cowboy Band and first played over radio station KFRU in Bristow in May 1925. Billy McGinty was a Rough Rider with Theodore Roosevelt and performed in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The public responded to the broadcast of his band with a steady stream of telegrams, telephone calls, and letters asking for more of that old-time cowboy music. Soon Otto Gray and his wife, Mommie, of Stillwater joined the band, with both performing rope tricks, Mommie singing sad songs, and their son, Owen, performing comedy routines as "the Uke Buster." Renamed Otto Gray and His Oklahoma Cowboys, the band traveled for a decade to such cities as St. Louis, Chicago, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse. Its custom-built Cadillacs drew crowds wherever the band went. By the early 1930s, other acts were copying the band's cowboy themes and songs, and Otto Gray's lawyers threatened legal action. The lawyers met with only limited success, though, and today the cowboy image is firmly established in country music, thanks in large part to the early success of Billy McGinty, Otto Gray, and the Oklahoma Cowboy Band.

Rank Pantaker, dispatches his henchmen to retrieve the money–and the girl–Lick and Al find themselves trying to outrun the bad guys and protect a damsel in distress. Is she playing Lick–or is it love? Will Al Bean’s cockeyed schemes, an able assist from Cody, Lick’s cowboy sidekick, a brigade of old-time rodeo reunioneers, and a few miles of duct tape be enough to stop F. Rank’s nefarious plan, reform a career party girl, and change the hearts and minds of ten of the world’s most thrill-seeking billionaires? Can Cody keep Lick from climbing onto raging bull Kamikaze’s back one more time? Can true love triumph over shoot-outs at the not-so-okay corral and close encounters with white tigers? Book Standard of the West

Download or read book Standard of the West written by Irvin Farman and published by TCU Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's not much reason to go to Spanish Fort nowadays, unless you're drawn there by its past. Today, it's little more than a ghost town with a handful of residents, a half dozen or so ramshackle, weatherbeaten frame houses, an abandoned schoolhouse and a padlocked general store with a sign proclaiming that the Spanish Fort Coon Hunters Association used to gather there for weekly hunts every Saturday morning. But in 1879, young Joe Justin set up shop in a little one-room frame building and put up a sign that read, H. J. Justin, Boot Maker. The opening of his crude, one-man shop marked Spanish Fort's final brush with history. The trail town would fade into oblivion, but it would be remembered as the original home of the company whose name became synonymous with cowboy boots and a part of western lore. Justin Industries today is a far cry from the one-man boot shop of more than a century ago, but its growth wasn't always an easy trail. This anecdotal and lively history of a family and a business, drawn from interviews with John Justin, Jr., newspaper and magazine articles and company records, traces the company - and its boots - through moves to Nocona and Fort Worth, periods of serious financial difficulties, family legal squabbles, and an unfriendly takeover attempt along the way to its present status as a $500 million enterprise with interests in publishing and building materials. But boots are still the focus - the Justin Boot Company, the Nocona Boot Company, and the Tony Lama Company.
