Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borrowing its title from Gregg Araki's 2005 film, in which the camera's contemplation of the male body encourages us to feel that body, and covering a broad span of subjects and films, "Mysterious Skin" offers a wider, more representative picture of the depiction of the male body in contemporary world cinemas than has hitherto been attempted. An international array of major experts explore the treatment of masculinity and the male body in the cinemas of Africa, Australia, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, North America, Spain, Taiwan and Vietnam, as well as Hollywood.Their common concern is to reveal how the representation of the male body is used in films to convey a country's anxieties about its national identity and history, as well as how it engages with questions of racial, sexual or gender politics. They discuss key actors, directors and films of these countries, from Ewan MacGregor in Peter Greenaway's "The Pillow Book", through the films of Wong Kar Wai, to Paul Hogan as Mick Dundee in "Crocodile Dundee". In so doing, "Mysterious Skin" also provides a strong overview of important cinema produced around the world in the last twenty years.

Book Skin Walker Academy

Book excerpt: SAFE DREAMS!!!!!!!!!! Laying on her bed, Morgan said “good night love you” as her mum and dad blew her a kiss and turned off her light, “love you too darling” they both replied. Mrs McGee smiling wearily added softly “SAFE DREAMS” as she closed Morgan’s bedroom door. Now don’t get me wrong, for most parents that would be the end to a lovely day however..... After they closed, locked, and bolted Morgan’s bedroom door, not in 1, not two, but 3 places. Mrs McGee sighed, kissing Mr McGee gently on the cheek and walked down stairs, leaving Mr McGee sat, where he sat every night since her last “NIGHT TERROR” which ended in her only friend she ever had never talking to her again. In fact no child ever spoke to her. Not that Morgan could blame them, she just stayed home and prayed for a quiet, event less night's sleep. That is, till the night of her 13th birthday when everything changed and she knew they were not Night Terrors at all.

Book Prep School Cowboys

  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Prep School Cowboys written by Melissa Bingmann and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranch schools in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Wyoming in the 1920s and 1930s portrayed that the West embodied the moral attributes believed to be lacking in urban America. Advocates of character education saw the courage and self-reliance of the Old West as the qualities necessary to preserve the nation through the next generation. Bingmann uses ranch schools, designed to counteract the problems of inherited wealth, as a lens through which to examine citizenship, class, gender, and region during this era while illustrating that these schools, in transmitting such values to American youth, created a network of elite private schools that gave pampered boys from the urban centers of the Atlantic Seaboard and Great Lakes region the opportunity to grow into gentlemen cowboys ready to take the reins of power in family businesses and government.

Book Skin

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Milkweed Editions

  • ISBN : 1571319638
  • Pages : 86 pages

Download or read book Skin written by Robert VanderMolen and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collection in over a decade from a master of his craft, Skin reflects earnestly on the miraculous moments found in the daily experiences of human life. Time and time again, Robert VanderMolen’s poems illuminate the cycles of human interaction alongside the slow-moving patterns of nature: “bark just separating / after nine thousand summers.” A speaker asks, “Is everything too old or too new?” and the resounding answer throughout Skin is that it’s a bit of both. Colorless birds, “a deep sweep of wind,” and arrowheads found in a dying red oak all point to fragmented moments that make up what it means to stitch one’s life together. “Attentiveness is my best friend,” a speaker remarks off-handedly, but this affair with observation is earnest and real. Skin rewards the reader through a tacit understanding that everything in life is part of something larger that we can’t see: the endless “thoughts that slide / into notice” where “in the chill of privacy / one seeks promise.”

Book Brown Skin White Minds

Download or read book Brown Skin White Minds written by E. J. R. David and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filipino Americans have a long and rich history with and within the United States, and they are currently the second largest Asian group in the country. However, very little is known about how their historical and contemporary relationship with America may shape their psychological experiences. The most insidious psychological consequence of their historical and contemporary experiences is colonial mentality or internalized oppression. Some common manifestations of this phenomenon are described below: • Skin-whitening products are used often by Filipinos in the Philippines to make their skins lighter. Skin whitening clinics and businesses are popular in the Philippines as well. The "beautiful" people such as actors and other celebrities endorse these skin-whitening procedures. Children are told to stay away from the sun so they do not get "too dark." Many Filipinos also regard anything "imported" to be more special than anything "local" or made in the Philippines. • In the United States, many Filipino Americans make fun of "fresh-off-the-boats" (FOBs) or those who speak English with Filipino accents. Many Filipino Americans try to dilute their "Filipino-ness" by saying that they are mixed with some other races. Also, many Filipino Americans regard Filipinos in the Philippines, and pretty much everything about the Philippines, to be of "lower class" and those of the "third world." The historical and contemporary reasons for why Filipino -/ Americans display these attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors - often referred to as colonial mentality - are explored in Brown Skin, White Minds. This book is a peer-reviewed publication that integrates knowledge from multiple scholarly and scientific disciplines to identify the past and current catalysts for such self-denigrating attitudes and behaviors. It takes the reader from indigenous Tao culture, Spanish and American colonialism, colonial mentality or internalized oppression along with its implications on Kapwa, identity, and mental health, to decolonization in the clinical, community, and research settings. This book is intended for the entire community - teachers, researchers, students, and service providers interested in or who are working with Filipinos and Filipino Americans, or those who are interested in the psychological consequences of colonialism and oppression. This book may serve as a tool for remembering the past and as a tool for awakening to address the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forged in dime novels, Wild West shows, and Hollywood films, the image of the American cowboy is largely a myth. But behind it were real men whose hard work and hard play, stoic toughness, and code of honor helped tame the American West. The epic cattle drives that were so much a part of the cowboys' heyday lasted only an astonishingly brief two decades. But the cowboy is still a basic part of the American character. Here, from historian Grayson Wyatt, is their surprising and little-told story.
