Book A Century of Ceramics in the United States 1878 1978

Download or read book A Century of Ceramics in the United States 1878 1978 written by Garth Clark and published by New York : E. P. Dutton. This book was released on 1979 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Inside Cover: The history of American ceramics from the celebration of the Centennial (1876) to the present day is rich, varied, and relatively undocumented. It is a period studded with men and women of genius, uncompromising ethical standards, and engaging eccentricity. The purpose of the exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York, and this book based on it is to present the history of American ceramics, its aesthetic and its influence, and so provide a perspective. Comprised of over 400 pieces, the majority of which are illustrated in this book, the exhibition and book span one hundred years of creative endeavor. In the decade-by-decade presentation, a variety of styles, philosophies, and techniques of ceramic artists is shown in this first study focusing on the role of ceramics in the modern, decorative, and fine arts of the United States. The journey of self-discovery and purpose that is surveyed here is an extraordinary one. It takes the ceramic medium in the United States from an imitative, exploratory stance in the late nineteenth century to a vanguardist role in the 1950s and beyond. The achievement is twofold. On the one hand, the American ceramists had established a beachhead for a traditional craft medium in the fine arts, redefining the vessel aesthetic and presenting ceramic sculpture as an intimate and meaningful alternative to the cerebral quality of postwar metal sculpture. More broadly, however, it reflects the triumph of a nation that has been able to achieve a cultural voice and identity through the arts in the brief space of one hundred years.

Book excerpt: Here is the first comprehensive survey of modern craft in the United States. Makers follows the development of studio craft--objects in fiber, clay, glass, wood, and metal--from its roots in nineteenth-century reform movements to the rich diversity of expression at the end of the twentieth century. More than four hundred illustrations complement this chronological exploration of the American craft tradition. Keeping as their main focus the objects and the makers, Janet Koplos and Bruce Metcalf offer a detailed analysis of seminal works and discussions of education, institutional support, and the philosophical underpinnings of craft. In a vivid and accessible narrative, they highlight the value of physical skill, examine craft as a force for moral reform, and consider the role of craft as an aesthetic alternative. Exploring craft's relationship to fine arts and design, Koplos and Metcalf foster a critical understanding of the field and help explain craft's place in contemporary culture. Makers will be an indispensable volume for craftspeople, curators, collectors, critics, historians, students, and anyone who is interested in American craft.

Book excerpt: Rocky River, Ohio, was originally part of a large township that encompassed Lakewood, Rocky River, Fairview Park, and the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland. Gideon Granger, an early settler to the region, believed that this area at the mouth of the Rocky River would one day be a major city and port, surpassing Cleveland in size and importance. Happily, Granger's vision did not come true. Rocky River continues to remain a small town in every good sense of the word. The early history and development of Rocky River unfold through the images collected in this volume. This visual history serves as a tour guide to the town's past, from its beginning through to the present day. For the first time readers will see the history of Rocky River, its most notable landmarks and events, and be able to relate it all to the town they know today.

Excerpt: Porches Pottery is a producer of hand-painted pottery in the town of Porches, in the Algarve region of Portugal. The pottery was founded in 1968 by artists Patrick Swift and Lima de Freitas, in order to revive a traditional Algarve pottery industry that was rapidly dying out in favour of more modern techniques. Swift and de Freitas chose Porches for its history as a pottery centre, dating back for many centuries, and for its clay pits. The origins of Porches Pottery date back to the early 1960s, when Irish artist Patrick Swift first came to the Algarve and encountered a region where handmade artecrafts were still abundantly produced and used, a system of commerce and production based around craft activities; a way of life, in fact, that had changed little since the Middle Ages. However, despite its remoteness, the region had begun its inevitable march towards "modernity," leaving behind a once thriving pottery industry. As mass-produced plastic and metal wares flooded the market, the potters found it increasingly difficult to compete and were reduced to making nothing but simple flower pots. In his book Algarve: a portrait and a guide, published in 1965, Swift had noted...
