Book excerpt: This open access edited volume is a comparative effort to discern the short-term educational impact of the covid-19 pandemic on students, teachers and systems in Brazil, Chile, Finland, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. One of the first academic comparative studies of the educational impact of the pandemic, the book explains how the interruption of in person instruction and the variable efficacy of alternative forms of education caused learning loss and disengagement with learning, especially for disadvantaged students. Other direct and indirect impacts of the pandemic diminished the ability of families to support children and youth in their education. For students, as well as for teachers and school staff, these included the economic shocks experienced by families, in some cases leading to food insecurity and in many more causing stress and anxiety and impacting mental health. Opportunity to learn was also diminished by the shocks and trauma experienced by those with a close relative infected by the virus, and by the constrains on learning resulting from students having to learn at home, where the demands of schoolwork had to be negotiated with other family necessities, often sharing limited space. Furthermore, the prolonged stress caused by the uncertainty over the resolution of the pandemic and resulting from the knowledge that anyone could be infected and potentially lose their lives, created a traumatic context for many that undermined the necessary focus and dedication to schoolwork. These individual effects were reinforced by community effects, particularly for students and teachers living in communities where the multifaceted negative impacts resulting from the pandemic were pervasive. This is an open access book.

Teaching has always been a challenging profession but the pandemic has added unprecedented levels of demands. Much of what we know about stress and trauma in education predates the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic recedes, it seems likely that recruiting and retaining teachers, always a challenge, will become even more difficult. This could not be worse for students, who face steep losses in their academic and socio-emotional progress after more than two years of pandemic-impacted schooling. The silver lining is that scholars who study the occupational health have spent the past several years studying the effect of the pandemic on teachers, which led us to edit this volume to collected what is known and have these experts explain how we can better support teachers in the future. This book documents the many impacts of the pandemic on the teaching profession, but also leverages research to chart a path forward. Part I examines the contours of stress, with a particular emphasis on COVID-19 impacts. These contributions range from parents’ achievement worries to compassion fatigue, and, more optimistically, how teachers cope. Part II examines pandemic impacts on pre-school teachers, in both the U.S. and in Australia. Given the social distancing in place during the pandemic, pre-school students and their teachers were under unique demands, as there is no substitute for the personal connection critical at that age. It is likely that students entering elementary school in the next few years will have work to do in their social skills. Part III focuses on mentoring and stress during the pandemic. Mentoring is an important part of teacher’s professional development, but the pandemic scrambled traditional forms of mentoring as all teachers were thrown into unfamiliar online technology. The final section of this book, Part IV, includes links between teacher stress and trauma during the pandemic. Clearly, with the ongoing nature of the pandemic, it is easy to see how trauma is likely to manifest in years to come. Readers of this book will better understand teacher demands, as well as the resources teachers will need going forward. Teachers made heroic efforts during the pandemic to help their students both academically and personally. We owe to them to learn from research during the pandemic that points to the way to a healthier occupational future.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the study was to create a greater understanding on how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the academic performance and mental well-being of students through the perspective of educators. Due to the ongoing global pandemic, the study is designed to incorporate the direct experiences that current educators have had and outcomes as a result of distance learning on students. This research is meant to educate current and future educators and school social workers on the continued ramifications that the pandemic had on adolescent academia and mental well-being. Participants were requested their participation through convenience and snowball sampling. The interviews were conducted via Zoom, an online video platform. The results of the study discovered that distance learning resulted in delays academically and developmentally, increases in conflict, psychological distress, withdrawal, decreased in-person involvement from parents and families, difficulty staffing classrooms with competent and qualified instructors, and a desire for clear structure and adjusted expectations on educators and students alike if this were to occur again. The implications of this study demonstrated that there is a direct relationship between the academic performance and mental well-being of students. This implies that creating additional emphasis and focus on the mental health aspect of a student is important to work towards educational success.

It has had a devastating effect on the world’s demographics with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. After the influenza pandemic of 1918, it has emerged as the most consequential global health crisis. After the first cases of this predominantly respiratory viral illness were first reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in late December 2019, SARS-CoV- 2 rapidly disseminated across the world in a short span of time, compelling the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. The outbreak of COVID-19 has proven to be a worldwide unprecedented disaster. It has physically, psychologically, socially, and economically afflicted billions of people across the globe. Its transmission is significantly high. Serious postrecovery has been noticed in a large number of people. The virus is highly mutable and new and new strains are appearing, and many of them such as delta, BA1 and BA2 subvariants as well as their hybrids have been considered by the WHO as concerning. The virus has exhibited deleterious impacts on bodily systems other than the respiratory system (primary target) such as the brain, hematological system, liver, kidneys, endocrine system, etc. Right after its declaration as a pandemic by the WHO in March 2020, governments in various countries declared lockdowns to combat the spread of disease, causing major disruption to the lives of billions of people. Besides the impact on health and healthcare systems, education was changed with the introduction of online and or hybrid systems to help students continue to learn. Though the pandemic has subsided now, the emergence of new variants continues and lifestyle changes such as online learning and work from home have continued. Researchers who successfully mitigated the negative impact of social media and effectively used it for acceptance of medicinal or non-medicinal measures during pandemics by developing a realtime information sharing system and assembling a multidisciplinary team of experts to collect and analyze data from a variety of social media platforms across the global diaspora to better understand people’s perceptions and attitudes, as well as to spot early warning signs of error and correct them before they proliferate. They also emphasized the necessity of addressing people’s perceptions in order to increase awareness and education, so that social media may be used to promote public trust collaboration, and improved adherence to epidemic control measures. In totality the pandemic affected the environment and ecosystem as a whole positively due to a decrease in vehicles on roads and less movement of persons from one place to another. However, medical waste was increased and new measures were needed to handle it. People have had to change their habits in everyday life in order to live with the pandemic and protect themselves and others. This volume focuses on the implications of COVID-19 on education, environment, and lifestyle. It includes chapters on the transformation of education systems and introduction of hybrid modes of education, impact on environment, management of solid wastes, and development of innovative gadgets and architectural designs to help deal with the pandemic. Other chapters cover diet, family systems, and adoption of new norms in pandemic times.
