Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic uncovered and highlighted the existing social inequalities in the country, which further suppressed the marginalized people. This includes sex workers who were often discriminated and stigmatized because the topic of "sex" remains taboo in our country. The sex workers and their stories and struggles during these challenging times are still undocumented and unheard. In this regard, using phenomenological analysis, this paper studies the narratives and experiences of sex workers in the rural Philippines, specifically in Central Luzon. This study showed the lived experience of five (5) sex workers doing different and "creative" tools to survive. From the "traditional" doing of sex work, with the advent of technology, it transitioned to online. They are using various "techniques" to lure more clients and gain money. They use "thirst traps" (provocative photos to catch/attract attention), online selling of explicit images, and making online viewer requests such as doing cosplays. The primal reason for doing it is because of economic necessity. Because sex work pays more than many office jobs or other service work averaging 500 dollars up to 2,000 dollars a month. Moreover, this study showed how sex work was reconfigured and the resilience of women due to the pandemic.

Book excerpt: The Covid-19 pandemic triggered the first global public health emergency since 1918, the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, and the greatest geopolitical tensions in decades. Global governance mechanisms failed. Yet, East Asian countries (with caveats) managed to control Covid-19 better than most other countries and to increase their cooperation toward economic integration, despite their position on the security frontline. What explains this East Asian Covid paradox in a region devoid of strong regional institutions? This Element argues that high levels of institutional preparation, social cohesion, and global strategic reinforcement in a context of situational convergence explain the results. It relies on high-level interviews and case studies across the region.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global scientific conferences and individual laboratories and required people to find space in their homes from which to work. It blurred the boundaries between work and non-work, infusing ambiguity into everyday activities. While adaptations that allowed people to connect became more common, the evidence available at the end of 2020 suggests that the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic endangered the engagement, experience, and retention of women in academic STEMM, and may roll back some of the achievement gains made by women in the academy to date. Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM identifies, names, and documents how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the careers of women in academic STEMM during the initial 9-month period since March 2020 and considers how these disruptions - both positive and negative - might shape future progress for women. This publication builds on the 2020 report Promising Practices for Addressing the Underrepresentation of Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine to develop a comprehensive understanding of the nuanced ways these disruptions have manifested. Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM will inform the academic community as it emerges from the pandemic to mitigate any long-term negative consequences for the continued advancement of women in the academic STEMM workforce and build on the adaptations and opportunities that have emerged.

After democratization, though, a fault line appeared that split the people into citizens and the masses. The former were members of the middle class who engaged in civic action against the restored elite-dominated democracy, and viewed themselves as moral citizens in contrast with the masses, who were poor, engaged in illicit activities and backed flawed leaders. The masses supported emerging populist counter-elites who promised to combat inequality, and saw themselves as morally upright in contrast to the arrogant and oppressive actions of the wealthy in arrogating resources to themselves. In 2001, the middle class toppled the populist president Joseph Estrada through an extra-constitutional movement that the masses denounced as illegitimate. Fearing a populist uprising, the middle class supported action against informal settlements and street vendors, and violent clashes erupted between state forces and the poor. Although solidarity of the people re-emerged in opposition to the corrupt presidency of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and propelled Benigno Aquino III to victory in 2010, inequality and elite rule continue to bedevil Philippine society. Each group considers the other as a threat to democracy, and the prevailing moral antagonism makes it difficult to overcome structural causes of inequality.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The study measured Filipino Americans' stress and resilience levels, how they perceived these levels changed due to COVID-19, how demographics affected these levels, and the relationship between stress and resilience. Methods: Social media was used to recruit 226 Filipino American adults for this online quantitative survey, which utilized the Perceived Stress and Brief Resilience Scales. Results: PSS scores indicated high stress levels. BRS scores indicated normal resilience level. Most participants' stress and resilience levels increased due to COVID-19. There were significant correlations between PSS scores and generational status, age, education, and change in stress due to COVID-19. There were significant differences based on gender and change in stress and change in income and PSS. Discussion and Implications: Implications include focusing future research on Filipino Americans and sources of stress and Filipino Americans' experiences with COVID-19. Interventions specific to Filipino Americans are needed to manage stress and to foster resilience.
