Book The Covenanters of Damascus A Hitherto Unknown Jewish Sect

Download or read book The Covenanters of Damascus A Hitherto Unknown Jewish Sect written by George Foot Moore and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Foot Moore's 'The Covenanters of Damascus; A Hitherto Unknown Jewish Sect' is a groundbreaking study that explores the little-known Jewish sect living in Damascus at the turn of the 20th century. Moore's meticulous research and detailed analysis shed light on the religious beliefs, practices, and social structure of this unique community, providing valuable insights into the complex tapestry of Jewish history and identity. Written in a scholarly yet accessible style, the book delves into the sect's origins, rituals, and interactions with the larger Jewish and Christian communities in Damascus, offering a comprehensive view of a group previously overlooked by historians. As a renowned scholar of ancient Near Eastern religion and Jewish studies, George Foot Moore's interest in the Covenanters of Damascus likely stemmed from his broader academic pursuits in understanding the diversity and complexity of Jewish religious practices. His expertise in comparative religion and his thorough examination of primary sources make this book a must-read for anyone interested in Jewish history, sectarian movements, or religious pluralism. I highly recommend 'The Covenanters of Damascus' to scholars, students, and general readers alike who seek a deeper understanding of Jewish sectarianism and religious diversity in the Middle East. Moore's insightful analysis and meticulous research make this book an invaluable contribution to the field of Jewish studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Covenanters of Damascus, Vol. 4: A Hitherto Unknown Jewish SectThe principal seat of the sect was in the region of Damascus, where its adherents formed numerous communities. It was composed of Israelites who had migrated thither from Judaea; thither also had come the interpreter of the law, the founder of the sect; there it had been organized by a covenant repeatedly referred to as the new covenant in the land of Damascus. Many who entered into this new covenant at the beginning did not long remain true to it; the writer inveighs vehemently against those who fell away, accusing them not only of grave error, but of gross violations of the law; but this crisis had been passed, and when the book was written the community was apparently flourishing.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book From the Damascus Covenant to the Covenant of the Community

Download or read book From the Damascus Covenant to the Covenant of the Community written by Stephen Hultgren and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this volume is a history of covenantal theology in the Dead Sea Scrolls. At the heart of the work the author provides new insight into the origins of the "new covenant in the land of Damascus" ("Damascus covenant") and of the Qumran community ("covenant of the community"). The "Damascus covenant" arose as a national restoration movement in 3rd century BC Palestine among Jews who traced their history back to the returnees from exile. The Qumran community emerged out of the Damascus covenant in the 2nd century BC as a refuge for the faithful when the Damascus covenant and the Teacher of Righteousness suffered the betrayal of some of their adherents. Other chapters explore the topics of dualism, the righteousness of God in the thanksgiving hymns, and covenant renewal.

Book The Covenanters of Damascus Vol 4

Download or read book The Covenanters of Damascus Vol 4 written by George Foot Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Covenanters of Damascus, Vol. 4: A Hitherto Unknown Jewish Sect An orderly disposition, according to our notions of order, is not, however, so constant a characteristic of Jewish literature as to make this inference very convincing. Manuscript A was evidently written by a negligent scribe, perhaps after a poor or badly preserved copy; B, which represents a somewhat different recension of the work, exhibits, so far as it goes, a superior text. When it is added that both manuscripts are in many places defaced or torn, it may be imagined that the decipherment and interpretation present serious difficulties, and that, after all the pains which Dr. Schechter has spent upon the task; many uncertainties remain. Facsimiles of a page of each manuscript are given; but in view of the condition of the text a photographic reproduction of the whole is indispensable. The legal part of the book, so far as the text is fairly well preserved, is not exceptionally difficult; the rules are in general clearly defined, and if in the peculiar institutions of the sect there are many things we do not fully understand, this is due more to the brevity with which its organization is described and to the mutilation of the text than to lack of clearness in the description itself. The attempt to make out something of the history and relations of the sect from the first part of the book is, on the other hand, beset by many difficulties. What history is found there is not told for the sake of history, but used to point admonitions or emphasize warnings; and, after the manner of the apocalyptic literature, historical persons and events are referred to in roundabout phrases which envelop them in an affected mystery. Even when such references are to chapters of the national history with which we are moderately well acquainted, as in the Assumption of Moses, c. 5, ff., for example, they may be to us baffling enigmas; much more when they have to do, as is in large part the case in our texts, with the wholly unknown internal or external history of a sect. The obscurity is increased by the fact that the allusions are often a tissue of fragmentary quotations or reminiscences out of the Old Testament, chosen and combined, it seems, by purely verbal association, or taken in an occult allegorical sense. Book Mark 13 and the Return of the Shepherd

Download or read book Mark 13 and the Return of the Shepherd written by Paul T. Sloan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul T. Sloan presents a detailed interpretation of Mark's Olivet Discourse in light of the Gospel's many allusions to the book of Zechariah, and argues that previous studies have rightly demonstrated the influence of Zechariah 9–14 on the Passion Narratives. Sloan shows that this influence is not merely confined to Mark's description of Jesus' final week, but also permeates much of his narrative; informing the Gospel's presentation of Jesus' royal identity, his action in the temple, the role of suffering in the bringing of God's kingdom, and the arrangement and interpretation of the Olivet Discourse. Sloan begins with an extensive review of scholarship on the presence of Zechariah in Mark before analyzing the reception of relevant texts from Zechariah in Second Temple literature. He proceeds to a fresh examination of potential allusions to Zechariah throughout Mark, focusing especially on Mark's use of Zechariah 13:7 and 14:5. In addition to influencing significant themes in Mark's Gospel, Sloan argues that Zechariah provides a helpful framework by which to interpret Mark 13, offering a potential solution to a notorious crux interpretum, namely, why Jesus answers a question about the temple with reference to the coming of the son of man.
