Book The New Covenant as a Paradigm for Optimal Relations

Download or read book The New Covenant as a Paradigm for Optimal Relations written by Pablo Polischuk and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Covenant as a Paradigm for Optimal Relations regards the New Covenant primarily as a gracious and merciful redemptive deal, springing from God's unilateral, unconditional, and proactive initiative. The New Covenant is adopted as representing both a salvific and an exemplary paradigm that displays God's gracious and merciful ways toward his children. Ten discrete, yet interwoven principles are extracted from, interpreted, and abstracted from Scriptures pertaining to the promised New Covenant. These principles apply to those who, as dearly beloved children, are invited to imitate God's loving ways. God's manner of love defines the foundational basis from which the author derives and elaborates the propositions that guide the considerations pertaining to thoughts, feelings, motivations, and behaviors that enter into play in relational transactions. In terms of style, an architectural design permeates the content of this book, offering and encompassing a metacognitive view of God's covenantal ways: a top-down perspective that applies to bottom-up endeavors of relational nature. The challenges posed by our cultural, postmodern trends--devoid of absolute principles and lacking a moral compass--are countered and addressed by the author in insightful fashion, offering theologically-based guidelines integrated to sound psychological principles, applicable to psychotherapeutic and counseling endeavors as well as to pastoral care.

Book Power Over the Body Equality in the Family

Download or read book Power Over the Body Equality in the Family written by Charles J. Reid and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "conjugal rights" has long characterized ways of speaking about marriage both in the canonistic tradition and in the secular legal systems of the West. This book explores the origins and dimensions of this concept and the range of meanings that have attached to it from the twelfth century to the present. Employing far-ranging sources, Charles Reid Jr. examines the language of marriage in classical Roman law, the Germanic legal codes of early medieval Europe, and the writings of canon lawyers and theologians from the medieval and early modern periods. The heart of the book, however, consists of the writings of the canonists of the High Middle Ages, especially the works of Hostiensis, Bernard of Parma, Innocent IV, and Raymond de Peafort. Reid's incisive survey provides a new understanding of subjects such as the right of parties to marry free of parental coercion, the nature of "paternal power," the place of bodies in the marriage contract, the meaning and implications of gender equality, and the right of inheritance.

Book The Covenant Theology of Jonathan Edwards

Download or read book The Covenant Theology of Jonathan Edwards written by Paul J. Hoehner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a theologian in the Reformed tradition, covenant theology was for Jonathan Edwards the internal scaffolding that gave shape to the biblical story of redemption. The establishment of the eternal rule of righteousness as the basis of the believer's communion with God and eternal happiness is a central theme beginning with the Covenant of Works, grounded in the eternal Covenant of Redemption, and culminating in the Covenant of Grace. It is the basis for the law-gospel distinction in Edwards and the early architects of federal theology. For the "God intoxicated" New England Puritan preacher, this was no dry academic exercise. Rather, it was a joyous and affectionate discovery and embrace of what God had ordained in eternity, what Christ accomplished in history on the cross, and what the Holy Spirit is doing and will complete in the church. This study grew out of current discussions in Reformed scholarship questioning aspects of traditional covenant theology. As a key transitional figure in the history of Reformed theology, Edwards's thinking is still relevant. The richness and depth of Edwards's vision of redemptive history provides a clear and comprehensive understanding of his Reformed soteriology and the role of evangelical obedience in justification.

Book American Covenant

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Gorski
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2019-06-25
  • ISBN : 0691191670
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book American Covenant written by Philip Gorski and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long battle between exclusionary and inclusive versions of the American story Was America founded as a Christian nation or a secular democracy? Neither, argues Philip Gorski in American Covenant. What the founders envisioned was a prophetic republic that would weave together the ethical vision of the Hebrew prophets and the Western political heritage of civic republicanism. In this eye-opening book, Gorski shows why this civil religious tradition is now in peril—and with it the American experiment. American Covenant traces the history of prophetic republicanism from the Puritan era to today, providing insightful portraits of figures ranging from John Winthrop and W.E.B. Du Bois to Jerry Falwell, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama. Featuring a new preface by the author, this incisive book demonstrates how half a century of culture war has drowned out the quieter voices of the vital center, and demonstrates that if we are to rebuild that center, we must recover the civil religious tradition on which the republic was founded.

Book Covenant Theology Made Easy

Download or read book Covenant Theology Made Easy written by C. Matthew McMahon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2009-08-03 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reason this book exists is to give the Christian church a basic overview of Covenant Theology that 1) follows the Bible, 2) follows The 1647 Westminster Confession, and, 3) is easy to work through. There has not been a book like this that follows the Bible, Westminsterian Theology, or the magnum opus of Herman Witsius (which is a watershed work on Covenant Theology called “The Economy of the Covenants Between God and Man”). This work follows the outline of Witsius and places these theologically important concepts into an easy to understand format. If nothing else has been read on Covenant Theology, this work would be a helpful volume to teach the serious bible student the fundamentals of the Christian faith in the same way that the Early Church, Augustinian Christians, Reformers and Puritans taught Covenant Theology. (The author has also written, “A Simple Overview of Covenant Theology” which could be a helpful resource and precursor to this volume.) Book The Covenant Retreat

Download or read book The Covenant Retreat written by Steven McGlaun and published by Saint Mary's Press. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Covenant Retreat affirms that each of us is called into a covenant with God. Through this retreat experience, high school seniors begin to identify their unique relationship with God, as an individual and as part of the larger Church. The leader's guide includes material to help teachers and leaders bring the experience into the classroom for weeks before and after the retreat. Leaders will find detailed directions for implementing the retreat; lesson plans, prayers, and handouts; material to help use the student component, Answering God's Call to Covenant, after the retreat; and suggested models for liturgical celebrations to bring the retreat to a close. It also includes suggestions on how to celebrate the retreat with the entire school through graduation and other activities. Answering God's Call to Covenant helps older adolescents consider where they want to go in life before they encounter the crossroads of young adulthood. Students address seven key questions and write their own covenant statements, which will help guide them through life's many challenges. The student text also helps seniors reflect, pray, and discern on their own after graduation.
