Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are we meant to understand the worsening ecological crisis, and how do we discover God’s presence within it? These are questions Courting Chaos explores with the help of Scripture, art, and poetry. Focusing particularly on the writings of Jeremiah, this book sees parallels between the looming threat of Babylonian invasion which hung over the people of Judah and our own global predicament. Because it offered a hope that would survive the chaos of defeat and exile, the book of Jeremiah is presented as a spiritual resource for us today, as we face living with an increasingly unstable climate. Courting Chaos weaves together the teaching of Jeremiah with the linked ministries of Jonah and Jesus, each of whom came through the chaotic waters of death to deliver a message of hope. Combining this with arresting works of art and poetry, and his own struggles since participating in a pilgrimage to the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, the author thoughtfully applies biblical theology to our current ecological situation.

Book God s Gift of Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graeme Finlay
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2022-10-21
  • ISBN : 1666748080
  • Pages : 142 pages

Download or read book God s Gift of Science written by Graeme Finlay and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is an aspect of modern culture that carries a huge weight of prestige. It operates on a foundation of supporting presuppositions, understandings of reality that people assimilate from infancy. Such presuppositions constitute our worldviews, but we are generally unaware of them. In this book, Graeme Finlay argues that many presuppositions that were essential for the development of science were imbibed from Judeo-Christian faith in the creator God, and they remain vital for the continued vitality of science. Furthermore, theology and science share a feature that points towards their common engagement with reality. New findings catch us by surprise--so much so, that we must conclude that we encounter previously unrecognized realities in genuine experiences of discovery. We don't invent those surprising phenomena. Both theology and science engage with an objective reality that is not of our construction. The subterranean connection between science and theology at the level of presuppositions and their openness to engage with reality indicate the potential for ongoing fruitful and mutually beneficial dialogue between the two disciplines. The author illustrates this potential through examples from the field of ecological economics.

Book Towards a Political Anthropology in the Work of Gilles Deleuze

Download or read book Towards a Political Anthropology in the Work of Gilles Deleuze written by Rockwell F. Clancy and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Political anthropology' as the major contemporary importance in Deleuze’s work This work explores the significance of two recurring themes in the thought of Gilles Deleuze: his critique of psychoanalysis and praise for Anglo-American literature. Tracing the overlooked influence of English writer D.H. Lawrence on Deleuze, Rockwell Clancy shows how these themes ultimately bear on two competing 'political anthropologies', conceptions of the political and the respective accounts of philosophical anthropology on which they are based. Contrary to the mainstream of both Deleuze studies and contemporary political thought, Clancy argues that the major contemporary importance of Deleuze’s thought consists in the way he grounds his analyses of the political on accounts of philosophical anthropology, helping to make sense of the contemporary backlash against inclusive liberal values evident in forms of political conservatism and religious fundamentalism.

Book Routledge Handbook on Human Rights and the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book Routledge Handbook on Human Rights and the Middle East and North Africa written by Anthony Tirado Chase and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent events such as ‘Iran’s Green Revolution’ and the ‘Arab Uprisings’ have exploded notions that human rights are irrelevant to Middle Eastern and North African politics. Increasingly seen as a global concern, human rights are at the fulcrum of the region’s on-the-ground politics, transnational intellectual debates, and global political intersections. The Routledge Handbook on Human Rights and the Middle East and North Africa: emphasises the need to consider human rights in all their dimensions, rather than solely focusing on the political dimension, in order to understand the structural reasons behind the persistence of human rights violations; explores the various frameworks in which to consider human rights—conceptual, political and transnational/international; discusses issue areas subject to particularly intense debate—gender, religion, sexuality, transitions and accountability; contains contributions from perspectives that span from global theory to grassroots reflections, emphasising the need for academic work on human rights to seriously engage with the thoughts and practices of those working on the ground. A multidisciplinary approach from scholars with a wide range of expertise allows the book to capture the complex dynamics by which human rights have had, or could have, an impact on Middle Eastern and North African politics. This book will therefore be a key resource for students and scholars of Middle Eastern and North African politics and society, as well as anyone with a concern for Human Rights across the globe.

Book Writing with Deleuze in the Academy

Download or read book Writing with Deleuze in the Academy written by Stewart Riddle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, authors working with Deleuzean theories in educational research in Australia and the United Kingdom grapple with how the academic-writing machine might become less contained and bounded, and instead be used to free impulses to generate different creations and connections. The authors experiment with forms of writing that challenge the boundaries of academic language, moving beyond the strictures of the scientific method that governs and controls what works and what counts to make language vibrate with a new intensity. The authors construct monstrous creations, full of vitality and fervor, hybrid texts, part academic part creative assemblages, almost-but-perhaps-not-quite recognisable as research. Stories that blur the lines between true and untrue, re-presentation and invention. The contributors to this book hope that something might happen in its reading; that some new connections might be made, but also acknowledge the contingency of the encounter between text and reader, and the impossibility of presuming to know what may be.

Book Old Man Ontario

Download or read book Old Man Ontario written by Roger Graham and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1990-12-15 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of the twentieth century, Progressive Conservatives have governed Ontario. One of the great consolidators of the Ontario Tory dynasty was Leslie Frost, premier from 1949 to 1961. This biography explores the life and career of one of the province's most successful politicians. Frost was born in Orillia, in central Ontario, in 1895. He served in the First World War, was severely wounded, and underwent a lengthy convalescence. In 1921 he graduated from Osgoode Hall and established a law practice in Lindsay with his brother. He became an active member of the Conservative party and was elected to the provincial legislature in 1937, during the years of Liberal government under Mitchell Hepburn. When the Conservatives came into power in 1943, Premier George Drew appointed Frost provincial treasurer and minister of mines. Six years later, when Drew stepped down as party leader, Frost succeeded him. Personally genial and politically pragmatic, Frost consciously exemplified the values of small-town Ontario. He led his party through three elections and swept to victory each time. During his term in office Ontario underwent enormous economic development. His government initiated progressive legislation in health, education, and human rights, and encouraged growth in the private sector through fiscal policy and public investment. Ironically, the burgeoning economy that was fuelled by Frost's programs led to a dramatic increase in urbanization and a substantial erosion of the small-town values on which his political image was built. But that small irony did no political harm to him or to the Tories. When he stepped down as party leader and premier in 1961 he handed over to John Robarts the reins of a party that was not to be shaken from power for another quarter of a century.
