Download or read book Reporting the Courts written by Richard Jones and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-12-04 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes a critical intervention into debates about journalism and the crisis in local news. Interrogating the history and current practice of court coverage in the UK, the author argues for its importance as a central feature of both open justice and public interest reporting. The book challenges narratives of a decline in the perceived quality of local media. Yet it also highlights a reliance on major local press companies facing acute financial challenges, meaning court reporting faces a potentially precarious future. The book critically examines coverage of the courts in the context of financial crises, which have diminished both newspapers and the criminal justice system. How the norms of court journalism emerged and evolved are put under scrutiny, and the book then considers how court reporting is practiced today, including the use of cameras and social media as well as remote hearings during and since the pandemic. The author takes us inside a major murder trial and explores why court reporting remains worth preserving and enhancing. Offering recommendations which could help to maintain and extend coverage of the courts, this volume will interest students and scholars of journalism, mass communication, media studies, media law and communication studies.

Download or read book The Essential 99 Punctuation Rules for Court Reporters written by Kenneth Wick and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Inexpensive Solution: Unfortunately, many court reporting students cannot afford Morson's English Guide (LMEG), Bad Grammar / Good Punctuation (BGGP), or The Gregg Reference Manual (GRM). The 99 Punctuation Rules is meant as an inexpensive solution until the court reporting student can purchase one or more of these references. 80/20 Principle: The 80/20 principle states that about 80 percent of the results come from 20 percent of the causes. Therefore, roughly 80 percent of punctuation usage comes from 20 percent of the punctuation rules. The 99 Punctuation Rules focuses on the 20 percent or the most commonly used punctuation rules. Grammar: There is an initial focus on understanding grammar. You don't need to be a grammarian, but you can't punctuate well without knowing the basics of grammar and sentence structure. References: The rules in the 99 Punctuation Rules are not my rules. They are the rules in the most current edition of LMEG, BGGP, and GRM. Other references were consulted when the LMEG, BGGP, and/or GRM did not agree. Unlike the "Student Edition" of this book, the differences in the references are cited, discussed, and compared with additional references like The Chicago Manual of Style. Therefore, this work is subtitled "Reference Edition."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please take your seat in the jury box. Justice in Your Court provides you the opportunity to decide fifty real court cases and then compare your “verdict” with the actual court ruling. You decide if and when schools can host religious clubs, whether churchowned businesses can use “volunteers” to do the tasks paid employees also perform, if the police can view your property from a helicopter without a search warrant, what limitations the government can place on free speech, who was primarily negligent when a resident of a condominium building falls through the rooftop skylight, if a prisoner whose mental state is such that he can no longer remember the crime he committed should still be put to death, and many other controversial disputes. Each of the fifty cases has an unexpected twist and provides the reader with both an entertaining and educational perspective of our judicial system.

Her old high school is on fire, and as she watches the students' responses, she knows she needs to help. Her life, changed by Mildred' s impact, has set her up well to offer assistance to the community in need: she has a gymnasium the other school can use for their prom and graduation, and with a little coordination with the other school' s principal, she hopes to make a night the kids will never forget. When her school, the School of Art, is vandalized, Mary knows her help must extend far beyond a single dance. But what will happen to her school and the museum if she takes in these at-risk kids? Will the new Second Chance Program truly be able to help these kids, or will the students' presence have a negative impact on the school and museum she loves so much? With Mildred' s nudging preventing her from backing down, Mary, Alfred, Antoinette, and Charlie venture into the unknown and the risks required to make a change in their community near Chicago. Nothing could prepare them for just how much their own lives would change by opening their doors— and their hearts. Mildred' s Legacy is the sequel to Mildred the Bird Lady, however each book can be read as a stand-alone or in order of publication.
