Every university should serve not only its resident student body, but also the entire community. This is true in a peculiar sense of a state university; supported as it is by the taxes of all the people, it is under business obligation to render back service to each? Citizen and to the commonwealth. In a general sense a university fulfills this obligation by sending edu cated young men and women back into their home communities to carry with them the culture of a broader outlook; the skill ao quired through professional training as lawyers, teachers, doctors, nurses, home-makers, business men; and especially the inspiration of unselfish service as citizens that is the intangible and priceless asset of university life. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Agriculture in the High School There must be a philosophy of secondary agricultural education. Conscious aims must be set up and their desirability established, and means and methods worked out that shall be effective in securing the realization of these aims. Clearer ideas are needed of the peda gogical principles involved, and the aims in view need to be more clearly defined. In this day of special methods for the teaching of the various school subjects, there should also be one for the teaching of agriculture. So far as our knowledge goes, there is not a book that treats of the methods of teaching this subject in the high school. A consider able amount has been written on the methods of teaching nature study in the elementary school, and the agricultural colleges have their own peculiar methods adaptable to the needs of the college student, but the field embracing school methods in secondary agri culture is still a virgin one. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Agriculture in the Public Schools Here again one can give no intelligent answer until one knows definitely what courses in secondary agriculture involve, the laboratory equipment needed, and the training demanded of the teacher. Then one needs to know the actual equipment of our high schools and high school teach ers, and the possibilities for training such teachers as are needed for this work. All of the facts which are needed to answer intelligently these and other questions involved in the introduction of agriculture into our pub lic schools are easily obtainable. To blunder ahead without first study ing carefully these facts and providing a rational plan, based upon the results of the experience of others and upon a knowledge of the facts involved, would be an educational and political crime. This Bulletin attempts to give briefly these facts. While we do not propose to offer here a complete plan for the intro duction of agriculture into the public schools, we feel that the facts which are presented make clear at least the following points. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eleventh Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education: Agricultural Education in Secondary Schools Some idea of the present demand for instructors qualified to teach agriculture in secondary schools may be derived from the fact that in the United States at present there are over a hundred special agricul tural schools located in 17 different states supported in whole or in part by the states, and that agriculture was taught in 1910, as a separate subject in more or less complete courses, to over pupils in public and 140 private high schools, according to the reports submitted by these schools to the Bureau of Education. It is true that much of the instruction given in these schools is very elementary and is of an informational rather than a practical character. It is true also that the courses given are very brief in the majority of cases. On the other hand there are fully as many high schools giving four-year courses as there are special agricultural schools and the courses given by them are as vocational in their character as the courses given by the majority of the special schools. California, for instance, has 12 high schools with agricultural departments in charge Of special agricultural teachers. All of these schools are supplied with land for instructional purposes vary ing from 3 to 27 acres in extent; all have available laboratories and several have greenhouses. Michigan has 11 high schools with four-year courses in agriculture, each taught by a graduate of the Michigan Agri cultural College. Massachusetts, New York, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Vermont each has several such schools. One or more may be found In almost every state in the Union. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of Agriculture in the Secondary School Program It is true that there are dangers at all these points, but they have been pretty well guarded against. Most Of the delegates to the national convention are boys above high school age. Boys may remain active members for three years after being gradu ated from high school. A national committee of state supervisors Of agricultural education is advisory to the boys' organization, so that adult influence upon it is well spread over the country. The two most common Objections to high school fraternities are avoided: there are no secret meetings; membership is Open to any and all high school pupils in vocational agriculture. The variation in the teaching in different schools is so great that several texts are required. Some high schools give but one year in agriculture, While others give four.
