Book A Course of Study for Teachers in the Public Schools of North Carolina Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Course of Study for Teachers in the Public Schools of North Carolina Classic Reprint written by North Carolina State Board o Examiners and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Study for Teachers in the Public Schools of North Carolina It is the purpose of the State Board of Examiners to help especially those teachers who are willing to help themselves. Under the various subjects will be found helpful suggestions not only upon the work in the school-room, but also suggestions on private study for the teachers. We feel sure that there are many honest, conscientious teachers, who are not satisfied with their present qualifications for their work, but are not sure just what to do or what course to pursue in order to make progress and to better prepare themselves for the school-room and its duties. Owing to the multiplicity of books at this time, the average public-school teacher is at a loss to know what is best for him, when he needs a book on any special subject. The State Board of Examiners has suggested under each subject books that are among the best. It is not expected that the average teacher will purchase all of the books on any one subject. If only one can be purchased, we think the first one named under a given subject should be selected. We would like especially to impress upon the teachers the importance of making, if necessary, a sacrifice in order to have some good educational books. You should study the history and the science of education. You should become acquainted with some of the master minds in the teaching profession. Our successful lawyers study law. Our successful physicians study medicine. Our successful business men study business, and no less true is it, that our successful teachers study teaching. Let not any teacher throw aside this book, with the idea that it may do some good to teachers who are in the schoolroom for eight or ten months in the year, but for a teacher of three or four months work it will be of no service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study: Baltimore County, Maryland, Public Schools; Grade I to VIII This Outline of Study is published by order of the Board of School Commissioners of Baltimore County, and in accordance with the By-Laws of the State Board of Education. It shows more or less in detail the subject matter by topics to be covered in each of the eight elementary grades, as well as the text-books, supplementary books and teachers' desk and reference books to be used; it also indicates aims and to a certain extent suggests methods of teaching. The Course of Study published in 1908 has been carefully revised and reconstructed by committees of teachers representing the various grades. All the suburban schools and teachers were not only invited to send in suggestions and criticisms of the 1908 Course of Study to these committees, but they were repeatedly requested to do so, until a reply was received. These suggestions were worked over by the committees of teachers working with the grade supervisors. Great care was taken to secure unity from grade to grade; to futher secure this end, outside specialists in various subjects were asked to criticise the subject matter as a whole in their special fields. The present Course of Study may, therefore, be characterized as the crystallized present judgment of large groups of specialists in grade teaching and of specialists in grade supervision, together with the judgment and helpful criticism of subject specialists not connected directly with our schools, on the organization of subject matter in their special fields. As such, it affords a new point of departure in our elementary school work. It represents our best experience and our present ideals and practice. Growth is expected to go on again from the moment it is put into use, and consequent modifications will be made in group meetings, as heretofore. It is intended to be no more static than any previous course. The Course of Study will be especially helpful as a guide to new teachers entering the corps, and, I trust, will prove an inspiration for further achievement to teachers and supervisors now in the corps who have so generously contributed their time and thought to its organization. The new form, also, will no doubt make it more usable and more attractive in appearance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Course of Study for the Public Schools of Newark N J

Download or read book Course of Study for the Public Schools of Newark N J written by New Jersey Board of Education and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study for the Public Schools of Newark, N. J: Adopted by the Board of Education, July 30, 1897 Mathematics should introduce the child to an accurate knowledge of the physical world. It should always deal with real things rather than with the signs of things. This is particularly important in the primary grades. The two most common errors in the teaching of arithmetic are, first, the limiting of its application too closely to commercial transactions, thus belittling the science; and second, deal ing with figures, characters and signs rather than with real quantities. In the primary grades all work should be concrete. The computation should be based upon dealings with actual things, measured or counted. Children naturally recognize the various relations expressed by addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and partition upon such numbers as they can readily handle and comprehend. Going through the processes of addition or subtraction upon very large numbers is for young children meaningless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Courses of Study for the High Schools of North Carolina, 1926 In the present publication, each subject is taken up separately and treated rather fully in the light Of its relations to all the other subjects and as a justification of its place in the curriculum. The Objectives ih herent in each subject are brought out in some detail. Outlines Of method are set forth and sources of material are given. A select bibliography accompanies the course in each subject. This publication is not intended to serve as a source book but as a guide to the young teacher who desires to increase her efficiency through a greater familiarity with the large body Of information that relates to her teaching field. It merely undertakes to conserve her time and energy by directing her to the sources. It is rich in suggestions, but it carefully avoids any appearance Of pre scribing either what work shall be done or the manner in which the work shall be done. The expansion of the public high schools in the State makes necessary on the part Of superintendents and principals a careful study Of high school organization and administration, in order that the public funds may be expended in the most economical way, and in order that the greatest possible returns in education may be secured from this expenditure. It is hoped that this bulletin will aid the school Officials in providing proper high school facilities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
