Book Religion Politics and Dissent 1660 1832

Download or read book Religion Politics and Dissent 1660 1832 written by Robert D. Cornwall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of the long eighteenth century (1660-1832) as a period in which religious and political dissent were regarded as antecedents of the Enlightenment has recently been advanced by several scholars. The purpose of this collection is further to explore these connections between religious and political dissent in Enlightenment Britain. Addressing the many and rich connections between political and religious dissent in the long eighteenth century, the volume also acknowledges the work of Professor James E. Bradley in stimulating interest in these issues among scholars. Contributors engage directly with ideas of secularism, radicalism, religious and political dissent and their connections with the Enlightenment, or Enlightenments, together with other important themes including the connections between religious toleration and the rise of the 'enlightenments'. Contributors also address issues of modernity and the ways in which a 'modern' society can draw its inspiration from both religion and secularity, as well as engaging with the seventeenth-century idea of the synthesis of religion and politics and its evolution into a system in which religion and politics were interdependent but separate. Offering a broadly-conceived interpretation of current research from a more comprehensive perspective than is often the case, the historiographical implications of this collection are significant for the development of ideas of the nature of the Enlightenment and for the nature of religion, society and politics in the eighteenth century. By bringing together historians of politics, religion, ideas and society to engage with the central theme of the volume, the collection provides a forum for leading scholars to engage with a significant theme in British history in the 'long eighteenth century'.

Book The Science We Have Loved and Taught

Download or read book The Science We Have Loved and Taught written by Constance Putnam and published by Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dartmouth Medical School (DMS), the fourth oldest medical school in the United States, was founded in 1797 in Hanover, New Hampshire, by Nathan Smith. An entrepreneurial doctor with his own special brand of patient-centered medical care, Smith saw the fledgling Dartmouth College as a "literary institution" that would give status to his medical school and enhance his efforts to train physicians to care for rural patients. The College and the Medical School have followed intertwined paths ever since, as Constance Putnam shows in her account of the School's first two centuries. Like all medical schools, DMS has had to learn how to get along with its parent institution. At Dartmouth, this has meant repeatedly sorting out just how independent the "Medical Department" (as it was initially known) should be of Dartmouth College itself. Yet it is the strong personalities and the unique way Dartmouth responded to changes in fashion for medical education that sets the DMS story apart. Putnam brings to life the men who helped make Dartmouth Medical School important in the history of medical education. The unique path followed by Dartmouth Medical School in the aftermath of the Flexner Report is also thoroughly explored. The book concludes with an assessment of DMS at the end of its second century and a look at the way Nathan Smith's early vision had grown to something far greater and more useful to the health of that rural population he sought to serve than even he could have imagined.

Instead, each chapter will specifically combine the relevant thinking with appropriate real-life evidence, through the use of pedagogical features.

Book Opening Doors Life and Work of Joseph Schumpeter

Download or read book Opening Doors Life and Work of Joseph Schumpeter written by Robert Loring Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author puts this book in the best possible context by referring to the ""magisterial and paradoxical Dr. Schumpeter"". A figure in a rare class with John Maynard Keynes, Friedrich von Hayek, and Alfred Marshall, the work of Joseph Schumpeter is equalled only in monumental significance by his personal trials and tribulations. The work is divided into two volumes - the first covering his career in Europe and the second his life and achievements in America.Walt Rostow, in his Foreword, sums up Robert Loring Allen's achievement in biography and intellectual history thus: ""In dealing with Schumpeter's life, Allen exhibits a rare consciousness of the extraordinary complexity and only limited penetrability of the human personality Schumpeter's closely interwoven personal and professional life unfolds, Allen develops without dogmatism a pattern of linkages for the reader to contemplate. In a splendid final passage, he provides a memorable summation.""What makes this enormous effort so successful is the linkage of the personal and the professional, the biographical with the intellectual. Indeed, it is Schumpeter's single-minded determination to explain within a single, formal theory, the dynamics of capitalism that bridges the gap in space, time, and personality. To his books The Theory of Economic Development, and Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy, both published by Transaction, is now added the specific contexts in which these and his other works were written. The author of this biography, like the subject himself, is a masterful student of the craft of economics, and its place within the larger social science contexts that Schumpeter worked. In this work, we are introduced into the main current of European and American social science alike. The title of the book, Opening Doors, derives from Schumpeter's life long aim to appeal to inquiring minds to move through such doors in an effort to create the social science of the"
