Book excerpt: Cette thèse présente un travail théorique et expérimental sur des effets transitoires de courants limités par une charge d'espace dans des couches minces de silicium amorphe hydrogéné. Chapitre 1 donne une introduction aux propriétés physiques du silicium amorphe hydrogéné et à la méthode de dépôts par décharge luminescente des dispositifs n+ in+ utilisées dans l'étude. Chapitre 2 donne un résumé de la théorie de courant limités par une charge d'espace dans le régime stationnaire. Chapitre 3 décrit des mesures de transitoires de courants entre 0,01 et 180 ms après application d'une tension d’injection. Le courant décroît rapidement, selon une loi en puissance du temps, ce qui s’explique par la descente progressive de la charge d'espace dans la bande interdite par dépiégeages et repiégeages multiples.Chapitre 4 concerne la relaxation de résistance de couches intrinsèques après coupure de la tension d'injection. La résistance transitoire est plus élevée que celle d'équilibre, parce que la charge d'espace de l'injection reste piégée et crée une barrière électrostatique. Pendant que les électrons de la charge d'espace se dépiègent et disparaissent de la couche intrinsèque,la résistance diminue comme R(t) = R(∞)e 1/ßt, où R(∞) est la résistance d'équilibre. La relaxation met en jeu des pièges au-dessous du niveau de Fermi et a une échelle de temps très longue, dépassant parfois une heure. La nature activée du coefficient ß permet une détermination de la fréquence de vibration dans un puits de potentiel à une valeur entre 101 1 et 101 2 s−1.Chapitre 5 décrit des dépôts d'échantillons de silicium amorphe par photo-décomposition. lls ont une densité d'états au niveau de Fermi de quelques 10 16 eV−1 cm−3.

A partir de la méthode des courants limités par charge d’espace (CLCE) sous excitation lumineuse, nous avons pu déterminer cette densité d’états dans un domaine d’énergie situé au-dessus du niveau de Fermi.Nous avons obtenu une densité d’états exponentielle de température caractéristique de l’order de 1000k. Nous proposons une discussion sur la différence dans les pentes de densité d’états déterminées à partir de la méthode précédente, de la méthode CLCE à l’obscurité et à partir des mesures de photoconductivité. Dans une deuxième partie nous avons fait des mesures de rendement et du temps de réponse de la photoconductivité dans un large domaine de flux. La comparaison du rapport d’électrons piégés aux électrons libres obtenu expérimentalement avec le même rapport obtenu à partir d’un calcul a permis de montrer la validité des densités d’états obtenues par CLCE sous excitation lumineuse.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed.
