Book excerpt: "From that moment on, something inside of me burned. It itched so badly like a mosquito bite on the bone of my ankle, rubbing on my sock. I thought all those things that went through my head, those repeated images, that same person; I thought I made it up. Maybe I watched too much TV with Mama. Maybe I got too emotionally attached to the characters. Why would I? Did other people have this feeling too? Suddenly, the confusion emerged. Too many questions. Doubting, second-guessing, and mistrusting myself. Then puberty introduced itself. Popping pimples, hiding feminine products, and learning how to be a woman with chaos raging inside me. I knew I wasn't quite a typical teenager. Something made me stand out like a whale in a fish bowl. I tried to hide. When I did talk to people, it was all manipulative. Everything about my life sucked to me, and if I had to lie to prove it, I damn well did. What happened to make me such a good liar? I abused others through my words. It is terrible now to look back on that and know what came out of my mouth purposely hurt someone. From the age of three years young, I was coached to lie." - from Alyssa's Story. Along with each description are Journal Inventory exercises, Inner Power Practices and Guided Relaxation exercises that allow the reader to be instructed through practical techniques to journey inward, reflect, and begin to gain insight and understanding that can lead to positive action. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes a reprint of PIONEER MOTHERS OF THE WEST; OR, DARING AND HEROIC DEEDS OF AMERICAN WOMEN, COMPRISING THRILLING EXAMPLES OF COURAGE, FORTITUDE, DEVOTEDNESS, AND SELF-SACRIFICE, written by John Frost in 1875. This book reveals the European white settlers' viewpoint of the American frontier in the 1700s and early 1800s. Then editor of the present volume presents a different voice, that of a Native American woman, with an understandably different viewpoint, in LIFE AMONG THE PAIUTES: THEIR WRONGS AND CLAIMS, written by Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins in 1882. Sarah Winnemucca is credited with having published the first known autobiography written by a Native American woman. Raised for two years in a white home, Sarah learned the English language and something of the English culture. She later worked as an interpreter and assistant teacher for her people on the reservation, and then served as a translator, scout, and messenger for the U.S. Army. Sarah even lectured across California and Nevada on the plight of her people, and her book was a part of this effort. As Frost said in the introduction to his book, "The heroic deeds of these noble American women, who first confronted the dangers of the western wilderness, are full of instruction. They teach us what women are capable of; they show us how dearly the blessings we now enjoy were purchased by those who went before us in the march of ages, they furnish abundant themes for meditation and study in the mysteries of human character and they present to us, by the strong contrast of past times with the present, occasion for thankfulness. Our women of the present age may be heroines, no doubt, in another way; and the occasions for self-sacrifice and noble generosity will still present themselves and still be heroically met. But the original Heroines of the West will always maintain their unrivalled place in the annals of our country, illustrious, revered, and alone in their glory."

Book Edna Ferber s Hollywood

Download or read book Edna Ferber s Hollywood written by J. E. Smyth and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edna Ferber’s Hollywood reveals one of the most influential artistic relationships of the twentieth century—the four-decade partnership between historical novelist Edna Ferber and the Hollywood studios. Ferber was one of America’s most controversial popular historians, a writer whose uniquely feminist, multiracial view of the national past deliberately clashed with traditional narratives of white masculine power. Hollywood paid premium sums to adapt her novels, creating some of the most memorable films of the studio era—among them Show Boat, Cimarron, and Giant. Her historical fiction resonated with Hollywood’s interest in prestigious historical filmmaking aimed principally, but not exclusively, at female audiences. In Edna Ferber’s Hollywood, J. E. Smyth explores the research, writing, marketing, reception, and production histories of Hollywood’s Ferber franchise. Smyth tracks Ferber’s working relationships with Samuel Goldwyn, Leland Hayward, George Stevens, and James Dean; her landmark contract negotiations with Warner Bros.; and the controversies surrounding Giant’s critique of Jim-Crow Texas. But Edna Ferber’s Hollywood is also the study of the historical vision of an American outsider—a woman, a Jew, a novelist with few literary pretensions, an unashamed middlebrow who challenged the prescribed boundaries among gender, race, history, and fiction. In a masterful film and literary history, Smyth explores how Ferber’s work helped shape Hollywood’s attitude toward the American past.

Download or read book Telling Tales written by Catherine A. Cavanaugh and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women played a vital role in the shaping of the West in Canada between the 1880s and 1940s. Yet surprisingly little is known about their contributions or the differences sex and gender made to the opportunities and obstacles women encountered. Telling Tales contributes to the rewriting of western Canada's past by integrating women into the shifting power matrix of class, race, and gender that formed the basis of colonization and settlement. Telling Tales both challenges founding myths of the region and inspires rethinking of how we tell the story of western Canadian colonization and settlement.
