Download or read book Pleyel as Music Publisher written by Rita Benton and published by Stuyvesant, N.Y. : Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1786 composer Ignace Pleyel (1757-1831), weary of the profits being reaped by printers and distributors of his compositions, was persuaded to become his own publisher. Maison Pleyel, as his firm was known, established itself in Paris, first publishing Pleyel's own King of Prussia Quartets, and eventually acquiring the works of such composers as Haydn, Dussek, Mozart, and Boccherini. Most notable of Pleyel's achievements was the publication of the first miniature scores in a series entitled Bibliothque Musicale. Presented here is the history of Maison Pleyel, as it grew and changed throughout its forty years of existence. Through excerpts of journal articles, correspondence, and historical references, Dr. Benton' s posthumously published work provides valuable insights into the world of 19th-century publishing and musical life. The book contains, in addition to an introduction, reader's guide, and source citings, seven detailed indices of the firms publications: Composers, Publishers, Engravers and Printers, Poets,Dedicatees, Plate Numbers, and Titles and Text Incipits.

Download or read book Orestes written by Voltaire and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orestes was produced in 1750, an experiment which intensely interested the literary world and the public. In his Dedicatory Letters to the Duchess of Maine, Voltaire has the following passage on the Greek drama: "We should not, I acknowledge, endeavor to imitate what is weak and defective in the ancients: it is most probable that their faults were well known to their contemporaries. I am satisfied, Madam, that the wits of Athens condemned, as well as you, some of those repetitions, and some declamations with which Sophocles has loaded his Electra: they must have observed that he had not dived deep enough into the human heart. I will moreover fairly confess, that there are beauties peculiar not only to the Greek language, but to the climate, to manners and times, which it would be ridiculous to transplant hither. Therefore I have not copied exactly the Electra of Sophocles-much more I knew would be necessary; but I have taken, as well as I could, all the spirit and substance of it."
