Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cod Fisheries, originally published in 1938 and revised and reissued in 1954, presented a new interpretation of European and North American history that has since become a classic. With that rare skill he possessed of weaving together the various strands of a complex and difficult historical situation, Innis showed how the exploitation of the cod fisheries from the fifteenth century to the twentieth has been closely tied up with the whole economic and political development of Western Europe and North America. The relationship of the fisheries to the maritime greatness of Britain and to the growth of New England as an important commercial power is particularly stressed; and in the examination of the conflicts growing up about this industry are revealed the forces underlying the struggle between Britain and France for control of the new world, and the forces which led to the collapse of thye British Empire in America and the rise of an independent new world political power. The political struggles with Nova Scotia and the long conflict with the United States, continuing far into the nineteenth century, are examined in careful detail.

Book Rescaling International Political Economy

Download or read book Rescaling International Political Economy written by Darel E. Paul and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major trend in recent years in political and economic geography has been the increasingly sophisticated use of the concept of scale. Rescaling International Political Economy sits squarely in geographical debates regarding scale and globalization, but Darel Paul does it within the framework if international political economy. In particular, he argues for the importance of subnational states and localities in creating globalization, and focuses on regions in North America. Alongside his arguments about scalar transformations, Paul looks at how the processes serve transnational capital and how they work to construct the transnational capitalist class which currently rules the globe. His regulationist approach, which stresses how the centrality of state institutions in managing the global economy, will revolutionize how we think about globalization.

Book Fishing at Grande Grave in the Early 1900s

Download or read book Fishing at Grande Grave in the Early 1900s written by Roch Samson and published by [Hull, Quebec] : National Historic Parks and Sites Branch, Parks Canada. This book was released on 1980 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the French regime, the Gaspé fishery was characterized by the seasonal migration of fishermen from France. The fishery became increasingly sedentary after 1760, as Jersey interests moved in and imposed their organizational structure on the industry. Jersey firms set up operations at Grand-Grave in this period, and features typical of the Jersey system were still visible there in the early 1900s. There is evidence that fishermen worked under differing conditions. All the fishing techniques were characteristic of coastal fishing, and the catching and processing methods belong to tradition that originated with the first Europeans who fished in Gaspé waters. Herring, sand lance and squid were the main bait species; the principal types of gear were the herring net, the sand lance seine, the jigger and the hand line; and the Gaspé boat, a type of sailing barge, was the main fishing vessel. The processing was done by company establishment and independent fishermen alike at the same time of the year, and traditional methods were used in both cases.
