  • Pages : 431 pages

Download or read book The American Disease written by David F. Musto and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Disease is a classic study of the development of drug laws in the United States. Supporting the theory that Americans' attitudes toward drugs have followed a cyclic pattern of tolerance and restraint, author David F. Musto examines the relationz between public outcry and the creation of prohibitive drug laws from the end of the Civil War up to the present. Originally published in 1973, and then in an expanded edition in 1987, this third edition contains a new chapter and preface that both address the renewed debate on policy and drug legislation from the end of the Reagan administration to the current Clinton administration. Here, Musto thoroughly investigates how our nation has dealt with such issues as the controversies over prevention programs and mandatory minimum sentencing, the catastrophe of the crack epidemic, the fear of a heroin revival, and the continued debate over the legalization of marijuana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 12th volume of International Development Policy explores the relationship between international drug policy and development goals, both current and within a historical perspective. Contributions address the drugs and development nexus from a range of critical viewpoints, highlighting gaps and contradictions, as well as exploring strategies and opportunities for enhanced linkages between drug control and development programming. Criminalisation and coercive law enforcement-based responses in international and national level drug control are shown to undermine peace, security and development objectives. Book Medication Induced Movement Disorders

Download or read book Medication Induced Movement Disorders written by Joseph H. Friedman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medications that may produce movement disorders are widely used. The resulting disorders are often highly disconcerting for the patient and their relatives, especially when the connection between medication and disorder is not recognized. However, ascribing an adverse drug effect to medication exposure is often difficult, especially when the side effect is rare. Covering various drugs - including the major classes of medications working primarily on the brain, specifically antipsychotics and antidepressants - this all-encompassing review of medication-induced movement disorders aids early recognition and improved treatment. The problem of what to do when the offending medication cannot be reduced is also reviewed. It discusses the best options for evaluation and treatment, including medical imaging and deep brain stimulation, and guides the clinician in managing the disorder, making this a vital reference for medical specialists and consultants in neurology and neuropharmacology and any clinician seeing patients on medications crossing the blood brain barrier.

Book Innovation in Pharmacy Advances and Perspectives September 2018

Download or read book Innovation in Pharmacy Advances and Perspectives September 2018 written by Organizer Committee IPAP18 – Salamanca and published by Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the summaries of the "Innovation in Pharmacy: Advances and Perspectives" that took place in Salamanca (Spain) in September 2018. The early science of chemistry and microbiology were the source of most drugs until the revolution of genetic engineering in the mid 1970s. Then biotechnology made available novel protein agents such as interferons, blood factors and monoclonal antibodies that have changed the modern pharmacy. Over the past year, a new pharmacy of oligonucleotides has emerged from the science of gene expression such as RNA splicing and RNA interference. The ability to design therapeutic agents from genomic sequences will transform treatment for many diseases. The science that created this advance and its future promise will be discussed. Phillip Allen Sharp is an American geneticist and molecular biologist who co-discovered RNA splicing. He shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Richard J. Roberts for “the discovery that genes in eukaryotes are not contiguous strings but contain introns, and that the splicing of messenger RNA to delete those introns can occur in different ways, yielding different proteins from the same DNA sequence. He works in Institute Professor Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, US. UU.
