Download or read book Honduras written by James A. Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the retirement of longtime dictator Tiburcio Carías Andino (1932-1949), the search for institutional stability in Honduras has led to both democratically elected governments and the imposed discipline of military rule. Social and economic change has contributed to the growth of middle-class urban groups, strongly organized labor unions, and a vigorous peasant movement. The Honduran armed forces, established in modern form only after World War II, filled the vacuum of political power that developed as the Liberal and National political parties failed to address the problems created by change and national development, but the authoritarianism of military rule has been countered by historical patterns of caudillo politics. Despite the revolutionary turmoil that surrounds the country, Hondurans have successfully conducted national elections and installed a freely elected civilian government after more than ten years of military rule. It is within this mix of "traditional" and "praetorian" governing modes that Hondurans have fashioned a style of politics conducive to compromise, which accounts for the country's relative tranquillity today. In this first comprehensive study of contemporary Honduras—its land, people, economy, and politics—to be published in English, Dr. Morris also outlines the historical context that has shaped the society of this now geopolitically important nation and conditioned its political dynamics over the past three decades. His analysis illuminates the characteristics that distinguish Honduras from its Central American neighbors and that may dictate a unique course for its political evolution.

Book excerpt: Honduras: A Territorial Approach to Development presents an innovative approach to address the development challenges of the country. The document first describes the main challenges to inclusive development in Honduras identified by IDB technical staff, which results in a proposal for a Spatial Economic Strategy (SES) developed with the company GeoAdaptive LLC. The Strategy extends across and connects the entire territory, taking advantage of sectoral synergies for enhancing productivity and breaking the established inequality and poverty cycles. This innovative approach seeks to break away from the traditional sector-approach and proposes comprehensive interventions that would enable key stakeholders to maximize synergies and the impact of their actions.

This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Honduran economy has shown remarkable resilience to various domestic and external shocks over 2020-22, and real GDP is now around 6 percent above pre-pandemic levels supported by the authorities’ prudent policies. That said, Honduras faces long-standing social and structural challenges that hinder its development potential and stability. Under the previous Fund-supported program that expired in January 2022, Honduras succeeded in enhancing the quality of fiscal policy and implementing institutional reforms. The current authorities are committed to maintaining prudent macroeconomic policies and advancing structural reforms while fostering inclusive growth by creating space for critical social spending and infrastructure investment. In this context, the authorities have requested a new Fund arrangement to anchor their economic and institutional reform agenda.
