Download or read book Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessments written by Ron Benioff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possible impacts of global climate change on different countries has led to the development and ratification of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) and has a strong bearing on the future sustainable development of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The preparation of analytical methodologies and tools for carrying out assessments of vulnerability and adaptation to climate change is therefore of prime importance to these countries. Such assessments are needed to both fulfill the reporting requirements of the countries under the FCCC as well as to prepare their own climate change adaptation and mitigation plans. The vulnerability and adaptation assessment guidelines prepared by the U.S. Country Studies Program bring together all the latest knowledge and experience from around the world on both vulnerability analysis as well as adaptation methodologies. It is currently being applied successfully by scientists in over fifty countries from all the regions of the globe. This guidance is being published to share it with the wider scientific community interested in global climate change issues. This guidance document has two primary purposes: • To assist countries in making decisions about the scope and methods for their vulnerability and adaptation assessments, • To provide countries with guidance and step-by-step instructions on each of the basic elements of vulnerability and adaptation assessments.

Book Fisheries in the Economies of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories

Download or read book Fisheries in the Economies of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories written by Robert Gillett and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fishing industry benefits the people and economies of the Pacific in various ways but the full value of these benefits is not reflected in the region's statistics. Records may be maintained but they are not complete, or accurate, or comparable. The research summarized in this report reaffirms the importance of this sector to the economies and societies of the Pacific island countries. The research reveals that the full value of fisheries is likely to have eluded statisticians, and therefore fisheries authorities, government decision makers, and donors. But its value has never escaped the fisher, fish trader, and fish processor. The difference in appreciation between public and private individuals must raise the question of whether fisheries are receiving adequate attention from the public sector---including the necessary management and protection, appropriate research, development, extension and training, and sufficient investment.

Book This Realm of New Zealand

Download or read book This Realm of New Zealand written by Janet McLean and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand is a democratic constitutional monarchy, one of Queen Elizabeth II's sixteen realms. This book provides a comprehensive account of how the Queen, the Governor-General and the Crown interact with our democratically-elected leaders under New Zealand's unwritten constitution. The authors explain how these islands in the South Pacific were first brought within Queen Victoria's dominions, the arrangements then made for their future government, and how those arrangements developed over time with the pressure for democracy and responsible government to become New Zealand's current constitution. They discuss the responsibilities of, and interactions between, the key office-holders: the Sovereign herself; her representative, the Governor-General; the impersonal and perpetual Crown, and the Prime Minister, other Ministers and Members of Parliament. All of them affect in some way the government which runs the country day to day. In an afterword, the authors examine some of the key issues to be considered should New Zealand become a republic. The parliamentary democracy that we take for granted can conceal New Zealand's ultimate constitutional underpinnings in the monarchy. But, as the authors make clear, the monarchy's continuing role in New Zealand's constitution is significant. And understanding the roles of the Queen, the Governor-General and the Crown will be critical as we look forward to debates about the possibility of a republic in New Zealand.

Book Pacific Regional Synthesis for The State of the World s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture

Download or read book Pacific Regional Synthesis for The State of the World s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Regional Synthesis for The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture summarizes the state of biodiversity for food and agriculture in the region, based largely on information provided in ten country reports submitted to FAO as part of the reporting process for the report on The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture. Biodiversity for food and agriculture is the diversity of plants, animals and micro-organisms at genetic, species and ecosystem levels present in and around crop, livestock, forest and aquatic production systems. It is essential to the structure, functions and processes of these systems, to livelihoods and food security, and to the supply of a wide range of ecosystem services. It has been managed or influenced by farmers, livestock keepers, forest dwellers, fish farmers and fisherfolk for hundreds of generations. The report was originally prepared as supporting documentation for an informal regional consultation on the state of the Pacific region’s biodiversity for food and agriculture, held in Nadi, Fiji, in May 2016. It was later revised based on feedback received from the participants of the informal consultation. It provides a description of the drivers of change affecting the region’s biodiversity for food and agriculture and of its current status and trends. It also discusses the state of efforts to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food and agriculture in the region, including through the development of supporting policies, legal frameworks, institutions and capacities.

Book Cook Islands 2008 Social and Economic Report

Download or read book Cook Islands 2008 Social and Economic Report written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cook Islands has transformed its economy since the public debt crisis of the mid-1990s. The economy is private sector-led, the Government is now on a sound financial footing and well placed to address key development issues, and the economy has proved its resilience in the face of five cyclones in 2005. The tourism sector remains the main driver of growth and visitor arrivals are expected to continue to grow. Infrastructure works are a development priority, both to support economic growth and to address the rising pressures on the all-important natural environment. Improved education services are needed to meet the ever-rising expectations of the population, and the aging population and steady rise in noncommunicable disease are placing new pressures on the health and welfare systems. The gap between living standards on the main centers of Rarotonga and Aiututaki and the outer islands is a further key development issue. Continued improvement in institutional performance lies at the heart of an effective response to these needs. This report discusses options for responding to these needs with a view to helping guide public policy formulation in the Cook Islands.

Book The International Handbook of Educational Research in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book The International Handbook of Educational Research in the Asia Pacific Region written by J.P. Keeves and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the Handbook is to present readily accessible, but scholarly sources of information about educational research in the Asia-Pacific region. The scale and scope of the Handbook is such that the articles included in it provide substantive contributions to knowledge and understanding of education in the Asia region. In so doing, the articles present the problems and issues facing education in the region and the findings of research conducted within the region that contribute to the resolution of these problems and issues. Moreover, since new problems and issues are constantly arising, the articles in the Handbook also indicate the likely directions of future developments. The different articles within the Handbook seek to conceptualize the problems in each specific content area under review, provide an integration of the research conducted within that area, the theoretical basis of the research the practical implications of the research and the contribution of the research towards the resolution of the problems identified. Thus, the articles do not involve the reporting of newly conducted research, but rather require a synthesis of the research undertaken in a particular area, with reference to the research methods employed and the theoretical frameworks on which the research is based. In general, the articles do not advocate a single point of view, but rather, present alternative points of view and comment on the debate and disagreements associated with the conduct and findings of the research. Furthermore, it should be noted, that the Handbook is not concerned with research methodology, and only considers the methods employed in inquiry in so far as the particular methods of research contribute to the effective investigation of problems and issues that have arisen in the conduct and provision of education at different levels within the region.
