Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections II By: Allan Edward Young, Ph.D. Reflections II is a continuation of Reflections I, the fact and fantasy of his life, as told by Allan Edward Young, Columbia University, 1967. There have been semi-interchangeable careers in the academic, government consulting, and business investment-advisory fields. There have been both lifelong and brief friendships and relations of both dubious and inestimable value. There's been extended work and travel on each of the world's continents, save Antarctica. There's been some successes and some most regrettable errors on his part which, at times, have greatly hurt others. And what has it all really added up to? This, he does not truly know. But he thought he might better approach an answer by setting some of these things down in story form.

Book excerpt: The award-winning New York Times bestseller about the American women who secretly served as codebreakers during World War II--a "prodigiously researched and engrossing" (New York Times) book that "shines a light on a hidden chapter of American history" (Denver Post). Recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than ten thousand women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of code-breaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, bestselling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.

Book Coalition Government as a Reflection of a Nation s Politics and Society

Download or read book Coalition Government as a Reflection of a Nation s Politics and Society written by Matt Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through examination of parliamentary governments in twelve countries, this book demonstrates the ways in which study of the parties in governing coalitions, and their parliamentary opposition, provides insight into numerous aspects of countries’ cultural values, societal schisms, and the issues of greatest contention among their people. Each chapter analyses the political parties in a different country’s parliament and illustrates how they represent the country’s competing interests, social divisions, and public policy debates. Coalition and opposition parties are also shown to reflect each country’s: political institutions; political actors; political culture; and societal, geographic, and ideological rifts. In many of the countries, changes in the constellation of parties in government are emblematic of important political, social, and economic changes. This book will be essential reading for students of parliamentary government, political parties, electoral politics, and, more broadly, comparative politics.

Book Meta Philosophical Reflection on Feminist Philosophies of Science

Download or read book Meta Philosophical Reflection on Feminist Philosophies of Science written by Maria Cristina Amoretti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a meta-philosophical reflection on feminist philosophies of science. It emphasizes and discusses both the connections and differences between "traditional" philosophies of science and feminist philosophies of science. The collection systematically analyses feminist contributions to the various philosophies of specific sciences. Each chapter is devoted to a specific area of philosophy of science: general philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, philosophy of climate sciences, philosophy of cognitive sciences and neurosciences, philosophy of economics, philosophy of history and archaeology, philosophy of logic and mathematics, philosophy of medicine, philosophy of psychology, philosophy of physics, and philosophy of social sciences. Since some of these areas have so far rarely been addressed by feminist philosophers, this new collection provides new angels and stimulates the debate on pivotal issues that are part and parcel of both "traditional" philosophies of science and feminist philosophies of science. Using a range of different methodologies and styles, the essays all show great clarity in both arguments and contents.

Book French Reflections in the Shakespearean Tragic

Download or read book French Reflections in the Shakespearean Tragic written by Richard Hillman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hillman explores English tragedy in relation to France with a frank concentration on Shakespeare. He sets out to theorise more abstract tragic qualities (such as nostalgia, futility and heroism) with reference to specific French texts and contexts. Three manifestations of the 'Shakespearean tragic' are singled out: Hamlet, Antony and Cleopatra and All’s Well That Ends Well, a comedy with melancholic overtones whose French setting is shown to be richly significant. Hillman brings to bear on each of these central works a cluster of French intertextual echoes, sometimes literary in origin (whether dramatic or otherwise), sometimes involving historical texts, memoirs or contemporary political documents which have no obvious connection with the plays but prove capable of enriching interpretation of them It will be of interest not only to scholars specialising in early modern English theatre, but also to both specialists and students concerned with the circulation of information and the production of meaning within early modern European culture.
