Book Globalization and Emerging Trends in African States Foreign Policy Making Process

Download or read book Globalization and Emerging Trends in African States Foreign Policy Making Process written by Rok Ajulu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: The resurgence of the democratization movement in Africa in the post-Cold War era is gradually replacing authoritarianism with forms of democratic systems. These changes have put into question the traditional big man image of African states’ foreign policy and foreign policy-making. The first book of its kind to focus on the foreign policy-making process of Southern African countries in the era of globalization, these instructive and rewarding case studies contextualize the increasing involvement of other internal actors in African states foreign policy-making process. Foreign policy actors such as the Presidency, Ministries of Defence, Foreign Affairs, Trade, Finance and the Intelligence Community, among others, are examined in a comparative perspective.

Book Telecommunications Reform in Malawi

Download or read book Telecommunications Reform in Malawi written by Frew Amare Gebreab and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998 the Government of Malawi decided to reform its telecommunications sector. Although the reform was ambitious in some ways, it was modest when compared with the most ambitious reforms adopted elsewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa. The two main accomplishments were splitting the incumbent fixed line monopoly, the Malawi Post and Telecommunications Corporation, into two companies-Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) and Malawi Post Corporation (MPC)-and issuing two new cellular licenses to two new private entrants. In addition, the Government also established a new regulator which was separate from, but heavily dependent on, the Ministry of Information and liberalized entry in value-added and Internet services. However, the Government had neither privatized the fixed-line telecommunications operator nor introduced competition in fixed-line services by the end of 2002. Clarke, Gebreab, and Mgombelo discuss sector performance before reform, details of the reform, the political motivation for reform, and events in the five years following the reform. The reform yielded mixed results. Although cellular penetration and Internet use expanded dramatically following reform, prices increased, especially for cellular calls, and fixed-line penetration remains low by regional standards.

Download or read book Malawi written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004-12-06 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an ex post assessment of Malawi’s longer-term program engagement with the IMF. Given the length of the engagement, and the important political change that took place in the mid-1990s, much of this report focuses on performance during the programs supported by the 1995 Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility and 2000 Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility arrangements. It provides an overview of economic developments, and reviews achievements and shortcomings in some key macroeconomic and structural areas. The role of the IMF in this process is also analyzed.
