Book Color Lines Country Lines

Download or read book Color Lines Country Lines written by Lingxin Hao and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing number of immigrants living and working in America has become a controversial topic from classrooms to corporations and from kitchen tables to Capitol Hill. Many native-born Americans fear that competition from new arrivals will undermine the economic standing of low-skilled American workers, and that immigrants may not successfully integrate into the U.S. economy. In Color Lines, Country Lines, sociologist Lingxin Hao argues that the current influx of immigrants is changing America's class structure, but not in the ways commonly believed. Drawing on twenty years of national survey data, Color Lines, Country Lines investigates how immigrants are faring as they try to accumulate enough wealth to join the American middle class, and how, in the process, they are transforming historic links between race and socioeconomic status. Hao finds that disparities in wealth among immigrants are large and growing, including disparities among immigrants of the same race or ethnicity. Cuban immigrants have made substantially more progress than arrivals from the Dominican Republic, Chinese immigrants have had more success than Vietnamese or Korean immigrants, and Jamaicans have fared better than Haitians and immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Indeed, many of these immigrant groups have acquired more wealth than native-born Americans of the same race or ethnicity. Hao traces these diverging paths to differences in the political and educational systems of the immigrants' home countries, as well as to preferential treatment of some groups by U.S. immigration authorities and the U.S. labor market. As a result, individuals' country of origin increasingly matters more than their race in determining their prospects for acquiring wealth. In a novel analysis, Hao predicts that as large numbers of immigrants arrive in the United States every year, the variation in wealth within racial groups will continue to grow, reducing wealth inequalities between racial groups. If upward mobility remains restricted to only some groups, then the old divisions of wealth by race will gradually become secondary to new disparities based on country of origin. However, if the labor market and the government are receptive to all immigrant groups, then the assimilation of immigrants into the middle class will help diminish wealth inequality in society as a whole. Immigrants' assimilation into the American mainstream and the impact of immigration on the American economy are inextricably linked, and each issue can only be understood in light of the other. Color Lines, Country Lines shows why some immigrant groups are struggling to get by while others have managed to achieve the American dream and reveals the surprising ways in which immigration is reshaping American society.

Book excerpt: It's time for America to move beyond zoning, argues city planner M. Nolan Gray in Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It. With lively explanations, Gray shows why zoning abolition is a necessary--if not sufficient--condition for building more affordable, vibrant, equitable, and sustainable cities. Gray lays the groundwork for this ambitious cause by clearing up common misconceptions about how American cities regulate growth and examining four contemporary critiques of zoning (its role in increasing housing costs, restricting growth in our most productive cities, institutionalizing racial and economic segregation, and mandating sprawl). He sets out some of the efforts currently underway to reform zoning and charts how land-use regulation might work in the post-zoning American city. Arbitrary Lines is an invitation to rethink the rules that will continue to shape American life--where we may live or work, who we may encounter, how we may travel. If the task seems daunting, the good news is that we have nowhere to go but up

Book Discourse and Conflict

Download or read book Discourse and Conflict written by Innocent Chiluwa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-22 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book analyses the relationship between discourse and conflict, exploring both how language may be used to promote conflict and also how it is possible to avoid or mitigate conflict through tactical use of language. Bringing together contributions from both established scholars and emerging voices in the fields of Discourse Analysis and Conflict Studies, it argues for a discourse approach to making sense of conflict and disagreement in the modern world. ‘Conflict’ is understood here as having a national or global focus and consequences, and includes verbal aggression and hate speech, as well as physical confrontation between political and ethnic groups or states over values, claims to status, power and resources. Themes explored in the volume include the language of conflict, hate speech in online and offline media, and discourse and peace-building, and the chapters examine various national contexts, including Lithuania, Brazil, Belgium, North Macedonia, Sri Lanka, the USA and Afghanistan. The chapters cover conflict-related topics within the fields of Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, Media Studies, and Applied Linguistics, and the book will be of interest to students, researchers and experts in these and related fields, as well as professionals in conflict and peace-building/peace-keeping.

Book Feasibility of LNG as a Fuel for the Mediterranean SSS Fleet

Download or read book Feasibility of LNG as a Fuel for the Mediterranean SSS Fleet written by Eva Pérez García and published by Fundación Valenciaport. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forthcoming implementation of international and European environmental regulations, namely Marpol Annex VI and Directive 2012/33/EU, will force ship owners to assess technologies that can allow them to comply with regulation whilst helping them to improve their position in an increasingly competitive market. Given the European economy’s fragile condition, prevailing uncertainty about its future and about the future evolution of key factors affecting the outcome of the ship owners’ decisions, making the right choice among the multiple feasible technologies available becomes a considerable challenge. For the past two years, the undersigned team of analysts have worked together in a study leading towards the publication of this report. This analysis has been the Fundación Valenciaport’s contribution to the European Union (EU) co-funded project “CO2 and ship transport emission abatement by LNG” (the COSTA Action). The COSTA project has been coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and co-financed by the EU’s Trans-European Network for Transport (TEN-T) Programme under the Motorways of the Sea Call 2011. Our objective has been to analyse which technology would give the best results for the ship owner to comply with environmental regulations concerning emissions from a financial point of view. This has been done for those vessels that are particularly affected by this regulation, that is, each of the 658 vessels deployed in short-sea shipping (SSS) lines calling at core ports in the Mediterranean and Black Sea EU countries and Portugal. Additionally, a cost-benefit analysis including externalities has been conducted. As a result of this study, different scenarios on technology uptake towards 2030 for the Southern European SSS fleet have been defined. Needless to say, there is no certainty of how many of the driving factors will behave in the next 15 years. The results published in this report are not definitive predictions of the Mediterranean shipping sector in 2030. Instead, our main findings are intended to stimulate discussions about available options for the industry. By examining the entire SSS fleet operating in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and Portuguese core ports, we hope to portray a general picture of the most convenient technological options for different kinds of vessels. In addition, we hope to draw attention to the factors explaining most of the uncertainty over future results and provide useful information for both ship owners and policy-makers who may be evaluating policies to foster the adoption of the technologies that are most environmentally friendly and contribute the most to the competitiveness of the shipping and shipbuilding sectors in Europe. Financial feasibility and cost-benefit analyses for the conversion of each vessel deployed in short-sea services in the studied area have been validated with the collaboration of prominent industrial companies. We would like to thank experts working for MAN Diesel & Turbo, Caterpillar, Wärtsilä, Ros Roca Indox Cryo Energy, S.L., Boluda Corporación Marítima, RINA and Bureau Veritas for the information provided and for their help validating the results on the investment required for each ship in the SSS fleet to install scrubbers, be retrofitted to LNG dual fuel or be substituted by a newly built vessel of similar characteristics and operating with LNG dual fuel engines, tanks and all the necessary installations for this newbuilding to be LNG-compatible. Their support has also been crucial to check the operational costs of the ship for each pair of alternative options (the options compared have been: installing scrubbers, retrofitting to LNG dual fuel, newbuilding with HFO engines plus scrubbers, newbuilding with MGO engines (no scrubbers) and newbuilding with LNG engines and other LNG-related installations). We share this report openly and free of charge to enhance the understanding of some of the challenges the shipping sector is facing, to encourage comprehension of the driving factors that affect the future competitiveness of short-sea shipping in the South of Europe and grasp the potential consequences that a “do nothing” scenario would bring in terms of modal backshift and increase in the use of road transport for intra-European trade flows. We hope you find this report useful and informative; and that it helps to stimulate discussion and thinking of the challenges, solutions and potential incentives to be put in place to favour the adoption of the technological options that will foster the competitiveness of the European shipping and shipbuilding industries. We sincerely hope you will enjoy reading the following pages.

Book Contesting County Lines

Download or read book Contesting County Lines written by James A. Densley and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining a compulsive read with rigorous academic analysis, this book tells the real-life stories of drug dealers involved in county lines networks, including their methods, motives and misfortunes. Conventional wisdom surrounding county lines often portrays drugs runners as exploited victims and gang proliferation as a market-driven exercise, and suggests a business model facilitated exclusively by smart phone technology and routinely regulated by violence. Aimed at students, scholars, practitioners and policymakers, this myth-busting, accessible book offers a novel way of thinking about county lines in relation to gangs and serious organised crime and presents new ideas for drug crime prevention, intervention and enforcement.
