Book excerpt: The Paris Agreement recognizes "the fundamental priority of safeguarding food security and ending hunger, and the particular vulnerabilities of food production systems to the adverse impacts of climate change."1 The main question of concern to be addressed in this study is the following: Is climate change a threat to food security? [...] Therefore, the purpose of the current study is to examine the effect that changes in atmospheric CO2 and temperature have had on crop yields in the past, and what this might imply for the future. [...] In Figure 2, we plot the average of the annual yields of the top twenty producers of each crop; the data indicate that yields of all six crops in the major producing countries have increased significantly since 1961. [...] The response of the yields of the six crops to projected changes in atmospheric CO2 and temperature is indicative of potential future food insecurity. [...] The regression results for each of the various crops are provided in Tables 4, 5 and 6.3 3.1 Level Effects Consider the results for wheat in Table 4. In each of the regressions reported in the table, the signs on the coefficients on CO2 and temperature are positive and statistically significant, while those of the quadratic terms and interaction term are all negative and statistically significant.

But whether climate change represents a minor impediment or an existential threat to development is an area of substantial controversy, with different conclusions wrought from different methodologies and based on different data. This book aims to resolve some of the controversy by exploring and comparing the different methodologies and data that scientists use to understand climate’s effects on food security. In explains the nature of the climate threat, the ways in which crops and farmers might respond, and the potential role for public and private investment to help agriculture adapt to a warmer world. Book excerpt: Global environmental change (GEC) represents an immediate and unprecedented threat to the food security of hundreds of millions of people, especially those who depend on small-scale agriculture for their livelihoods. As this book shows, at the same time, agriculture and related activities also contribute to GEC by, for example, intensifying greenhouse gas emissions and altering the land surface. Responses aimed at adapting to GEC may have negative consequences for food security, just as measures taken to increase food security may exacerbate GEC. The authors show that this complex and dynamic relationship between GEC and food security is also influenced by additional factors; food systems are heavily influenced by socioeconomic conditions, which in turn are affected by multiple processes such as macro-level economic policies, political conflicts and other important drivers. Current scenarios for business-as-usual farming under climate change project growing food security challenges by 2050. Worst hit will be underdeveloped regions of the world where food insecurity is already a problem and populations are vulnerable to shocks (Rosegrant et al. 2014). Improvements in agricultural technology and management are expected to increase food security, but if we do not address climate change, climate-related losses in crop and livestock productivity will reduce those gains (Lobell and Gourdji 2012). In this challenging environment, countries will need to contend with shifts in which crops they can best produce, significant changes in global prices, and change in countries’ comparative advantages. New analytical tools that allow policy makers and decision makers to integrate data from the global to the local level offer an important opportunity for countries to identify the most effective ways to address climate change. As the 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP22) gets underway and the role of agriculture as a key element in reducing emissions is widely recognized, countries can use these tools to identify locally appropriate policies that will reduce the impact of climate change on food security over the long term.

Almost all women farmers in the country depend upon agriculture as a major source of income to enhance their food security. There has thus far been no systematic study about the impact of climate change on food security of women farmers. Therefore to fill this lacuna, the present study was conducted in five Village Development Committees with 150 households of Udayapur district in Nepal. The present research aims to study the perception of farmers about climate change, the impact of climate change on agriculture and food security. It also documents the adaptation strategies that farmers practice. The study also attempts to study the agricultural policies through a gender perspective and identify the gaps in the policy. Both primary and secondary sources were used for data collection. The production of the major food crops like wheat, maize, rice, fruits fresh vegetables and livestock has been in relative decline since the past several years. Sometimes total crop failure occurred due to drought, excessive rainfall or an epidemic of insects, pests and diseases. The change in the climatic pattern has resulted in decreased crop productivity that increases food insecurity of the people. Farmers use different adaptation measures to cope with the adverse effect of climate change. These helped to minimise crop losses and improve the food security situation of women farmers by preventing crop loss. The national agricultural policy was found lacking in gender sensitivity. Based on the analysis of the data, recommendations have been made to the government.

Global warming is projected to have significant impacts on conditions affecting agriculture, including temperature, carbon dioxide, glacial run-off, precipitation and the interaction of these elements. These conditions determine the carrying capacity of the biosphere to produce enough food for the human population and domesticated animals. The overall effect of climate change on agriculture will depend on the balance of these effects. Assessment of the effects of global climate changes on agriculture might help to properly anticipate and adapt farming to maximize agricultural production. At the same time, agriculture has been shown to produce significant effects on climate change, primarily through the production and release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, but also by altering the Earth’s land cover, which can change its ability to absorb or reflect heat and light, thus contributing to radiative forcing. Sustained and systematic attention is crucial if we are to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe — A 2009 ICTSD-IPC study by Jodie Keane suggests that climate change could cause farm output in sub-Saharan Africa to decrease by 12 percent by 2080 although in some African countries this figure could be as much as 60 percent, with agricultural exports declining by up to one fifth in others. Adapting to climate change could cost the agriculture sector $14bn globally a year, the study finds. Book excerpt: There is suf?cient need to document all the available data on biological control of rice diseases in a small volume. Part of this need rests on the global importance of rice to human life. In the ?rst chapter, I have tried to show that rice is indeed life for most people in Asia and shortages in production and availability can lead to a food crisis. While rice is cultivated in most continents, biological disease management attains special relevance to rice farmers of Africa, Asia, and also perhaps, Latin America. These farmers are resource-poor and might not be able to afford the cost of expensive chemical treatments to control devastating rice pathogens such as Magnaporthe oryzae (blast), Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (bacterial leaf blight), Rhizoctonia solani (sheath blight) and the virus, rice tungro disease. In an earlier volume that I developed under the title, Biological Control of Crop Diseases (Dekker/CRC Publishers, 2002), I included transgenic crops generated for the management of plant pathogens as biological control under the umbrella of a broad de?nition. Dr Jim Cook who wrote the Foreword for the volume lauded the inclusion of transgenic crops and induced systemic resistance (ISR) as a positive trend toward acceptance of host plant resistance as part of biocontrol. I continue to subscribe to this view.
