Book The Country House Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Country House Classic Reprint written by John Galsworthy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Country House The year was 1891, the month October, the day Monday. In the dark outside the railway-station at Worsted Skeynes Mr. Horace Pendyce's omnibus, his brougham, his luggage-cart, monopolized space. The face of Mr. Horace Pendyce's coachman monopolized the light of the solitary station lantern. Rosy-gilled, with fat close-clipped grey whiskers and inscrutably pursed lips, it presided high up in the easterly air like an emblem of the feudal system. On the platform within, Mr. Horace Pendyce's first footman and second groom in long livery coats with silver buttons, their appearance slightly relieved by the rakish cock of their top-hats, awaited the arrival of the six-fifteen. The first footman took from his pocket a half-sheet of stamped and crested notepaper covered with Mr. Horace Pendyce's small and precise calligraphy. He read from it in a nasal, derisive voice: "Hon. Geoff, and Mrs. Winlow, blue room and dress; maid, small drab. Mr. George, white room. Mrs. Jaspar Bellew, gold. The Captain, red. General Pendyce, pink room; valet, back attic. That's the lot." I left Charleston the fifteenth of this month, over whelmed, as in all other places, with presents, and an infinity of kindness and attentions. But ah how weary and worn out I was during the last days there with the labour of incessant society. Sea-bathing kept me alive, as well as a few hours of rest in the kind house of my friend Mrs. W. Book Small Country Houses

Download or read book Small Country Houses written by Lawrence Weaver and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Small Country Houses: Their Repair and Enlargement; Forty Examples Chosen From Five Centuries The welcome given to Small Country Houses: Their Repair and Enlargement. ix. Preface. The welcome given to Small Country Houses of To-day would seem, if I may believe my correspondents, to have been due in no small measure to the seven chapters (out of forty-eight) which described old houses repaired and enlarged. This suggested that a second and uniform volume, dealing wholly with the treatment of old houses, whether cottage or farm house or small manor house, would be useful to the increasing number of people who like the atmosphere of age in their homes. A real responsibility rests on those who under take the alteration of an old fabric, for our buildings are an essential part of our national history. This is no less true of the cottage than of the palace. Our building traditions are as much, indeed more, a heritage from forgotten craftsmen, as from William of Wykeham, Master Yevele at Westminster and John of Gloucester, who was Kings Mason at Windsor. Of such nameless folk we may use Solomon's words, with but a single change: . a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom built the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. To those who appreciate all the skill and subtlety of touch which were the outcome of the wisdom of old builders, this record of the treatment of their handiwork is dedicated. I have to acknowledge the kindness of Mr. Basil Oliver, who has lent me the photographs for Figs. I, V, VI, and the plan in Fig.47;of Mr. Batsford, for his permission to reproduce that plan from Mr. Oliver's Old Houses and Village Buildings in East Anglia; and of Mr. H. Avray Tipping, for allowing me to incorporate the substance of two articles by him in Chapters VIII and XXVI.
