Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life, from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community, and from making house calls to providing emergency room care. Book Call the Nurse

Download or read book Call the Nurse written by Mary J. MacLeod and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud owners of a near-derelict croft house—a farmer’s stone cottage—on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse. Call the Nurse is her account of the enchanted years she and her family spent there, coming to know its folk as both patients and friends. In anecdotes that are by turns funny, sad, moving, and tragic, she recalls them all, the crofters and their laird, the boatmen and tradesmen, young lovers and forbidding churchmen. Against the old-fashioned island culture and the grandeur of mountain and sea unfold indelible stories: a young woman carried through snow for airlift to the hospital; a rescue by boat; the marriage of a gentle giant and the island beauty; a ghostly encounter; the shocking discovery of a woman in chains; the flames of a heather fire at night; an unexploded bomb from World War II; and the joyful, tipsy celebration of a ceilidh. Gaelic fortitude meets a nurse’s compassion in these wonderful true stories from rural Scotland.

Book A Fortunate Man

Download or read book A Fortunate Man written by John Berger and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1997-03-25 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this quietly revolutionary work of social observation and medical philosophy, Booker Prize-winning writer John Berger and the photographer Jean Mohr train their gaze on an English country doctor and find a universal man--one who has taken it upon himself to recognize his patient's humanity when illness and the fear of death have made them unrecognizable to themselves. In the impoverished rural community in which he works, John Sassall tend the maimed, the dying, and the lonely. He is not only the dispenser of cures but the repository of memories. And as Berger and Mohr follow Sassall about his rounds, they produce a book whose careful detail broadens into a meditation on the value we assign a human life. First published thirty years ago, A Fortunate Man remains moving and deeply relevant--no other book has offered such a close and passionate investigation of the roles doctors play in their society. "In contemporary letters John Berger seems to me peerless; not since Lawrence has there been a writer who offers such attentiveness to the sensual world with responsiveness to the imperatives of conscience." --Susan Sontag

Book Bryson City Tales

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captivating stories of how a young doctor's first year of medical practice in the Smoky Mountains shaped his practice of life and faith. The little mountain hamlet of Bryson City, North Carolina, offers more than dazzling vistas. For Walt Larimore, a young "flatlander" physician setting up his first practice, the town presents its peculiar challenges as well. With the winsomeness of a James Herriott book, Bryson City Tales sweeps you into a world of colorful characters, the texture of Smoky Mountain life, and the warmth, humor, quirks, and struggles of a small country town. It's a world where the family doctor is also the emergency physician, the coroner, and the obstetrician, and where wilderness medicine is part of the job, search-and-rescue calls in the national forest are a way of life, and the next patient just may be somebody's livestock or pet. Bryson City Tales is the tender and insightful chronicle of a young man's rite of passage from medical student to family physician. Laughter and adventure await you in these pages, and lessons learned from Bryson City's unforgettable residents.

Book The Next Prescription

Download or read book The Next Prescription written by Jimmie L. Ashcraft M. D. and published by . This book was released on 2020-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An African proverb says, "It takes an entire village to raise a child". The same can be said of physicians. No one traverses the journey through medical training and private practice by themselves because "the stars are aligned just right". The journey demands a considerable supportive effort from a village of many or perhaps many villages. This book contains my reflections upon my 26 years as an "old time" generalist family physician in rural America. It is merely a collection of stories that depict some of my experiences over the years. The stories mirror those of many of my generalist colleagues who have experienced "the trenches" of rural primary care. In fact, on occasion, I introduced myself as nothing more than a full time "trenchologist".My stories span the breadth and depth of the discipline of rural family medicine. Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life and from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community. Some are silly, some are sad, some are funny, and some may make you mad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been most gratified with the positive response to my first book, Reflections of a Country Doctor. Many readers encouraged me to write another book that told the rest of my story. This book contains some of my experiences during my premedical and medical training years and more of my experiences during my twenty-six years as an "old time" family physician in rural America. Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life, from experiencing the joys of pediatrics to the frustrations of medical errors, from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community, and from making routine home visits to providing life-ordeath emergency care. In keeping with the format of Reflections of a Country Doctor, some of the stories are silly, some are sad, some are funny, and some may make you mad.
