Book excerpt: Thinking of getting a Japanese-style tattoo? Want to avoid a permanent mistake? Japanese Tattoos is an insider's look at the world of Japanese irezumi (tattoos). Japanese Tattoos explains the imagery featured in Japanese tattoos so that readers can avoid getting ink they don't understand or, worse, that they'll regret. This photo-heavy book will also trace the history of Japanese tattooing, putting the iconography and kanji symbols in their proper context so readers will be better informed as to what they mean and have a deeper understanding of irezumi. Tattoos featured will range from traditional tebori (hand-poked) and kanji tattoos to anime-inspired and modern works--as well as everything in between. For the first time, Japanese tattooing will be put together in a visually attractive, informative, and authoritative way. Along with the 350+ photos of tattoos, Japanese Tattoos will also feature interviews with Japanese tattoo artists on a variety of topics. What's more, there will be interviews with clients, who are typically overlooked in similar books, allowing them to discuss what their Japanese tattoos mean to them. Those who read this informative tattoo guide will be more knowledgeable about Japanese tattoos should they want to get inked or if they are simply interested in Japanese art and culture.

Book Whipscars and Tattoos

  • Author : Geoffrey Sanborn
  • Publisher : OUP USA
  • Release : 2011-02-09
  • ISBN : 0199751692
  • Pages : 203 pages

Download or read book Whipscars and Tattoos written by Geoffrey Sanborn and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-02-09 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Whipscars and Tattoos, Geoffrey Sanborn dramatically transforms the standard interpretations of two of the most important novels in American literary history. On the basis of original scholarship showing that Magua, the supposed villain of The Last of the Mohicans, and Queequeg, the supposed emblem of love in Moby-Dick, are based on Maori chiefs, Sanborn argues that each character is, above all else, an embodiment of the fiercely majestic qualities that were conventionally associated with high-ranking Maori men.In this striking transnational context, The Last of the Mohicans reappears before us as a simultaneously elitist and anti-racist novel, influenced not only by the contemporary conception of the Maori as the tribal people most likely to establish an independent, modernizing nation, but by the surge of political idealism that accompanied the global revolutions of the early 1820s. Moby-Dick undergoes a similarly profound metamorphosis. By enabling us to see Queequeg as an incarnation of the quintessentially Maori virtues of mana and tapu--power and untouchability--Sanborn makes it possible for us to see the White Whale as the epitome of those virtues, opening us to a vision of the world in which every being is moved and shaped by a furious, doomed insistence on its value.Formally as well as argumentatively, Whipscars and Tattoos breaks new ground. Rather than restrict his account of the Maori to an overview of Western representations of New Zealand, Sanborn devotes entire chapters to the life stories of Te Ara and Te Pehi Kupe, the chiefs on whom Magua and Queequeg were modeled. The result is a book in which life bleeds into literature and back again, in which Maori biographies cross-fertilize with readings of American novels, and in which defiant self-assertion is provocatively reimagined as the basis of our relationship to the world.

Book Prison Tattoos

    Book Details:
  • Author : Efrat Shoham
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2015-03-10
  • ISBN : 3319158716
  • Pages : 113 pages

Download or read book Prison Tattoos written by Efrat Shoham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief studies the important role that tattoos play in prison culture, and examines its unique manifestation among minority inmates. This work aims to provide a better understanding of prison group culture, particularly among social marginal groups, through the lens of Russian immigrants in Israeli prisons. Russian immigrants currently represent approximately 25% of the total Israeli prison population, and this book examines how tattoos show an important form of rebellion amongst this group. As tattoos are forbidden in some forms of Islam and Judaism, and the Israeli prison service confiscates over 200 homemade tattoo devices per year, this is a significant phenomenon both before and during incarceration. This work examines how despite the transition to Israel, the main social codes of Russian prisoners are still dominant and help segregate this group from the larger prison population. It provides a lens to understand Russian criminal activity in Israel, and in a larger context, the modes of social cohesion and criminal activity of organized crime groups operating in prison systems. This work will be of interest to researchers studying the organized crime and the criminal justice system, Russian organized crime in particular, as well as related studies of immigration, demography, and social cohesion.

Book excerpt: The fourth novel in the Cahokian story cycle, Star Path is an evocative tale about America’s greatest pre-Columbian city by New York Times bestselling authors W. Michael and Kathleen O’Neal Gear How do you say no to a god? Cahokia recovers from a year of chaos following a near civil war and the god incarnate, Morning Star, has declared that his human sister Night Shadow Star and her slave Fire Cat must make a dangerous journey to far off Cofitachequi. For an old threat has arisen on the other side of the great eastern mountains - their brother, Walking Smoke, a madman who is convinced that he is the true deity destined to rule Cahokia. Night Shadow Star is also ruled by the Underworld Lord, Piasa, but this power dangles a chance of happiness in front of Night Shadow Star and Fire Cat – if they succeed with his agenda, they might become nameless, clanless, and worthless. And thus free. But the treacherous Tenasee River that they must travel holds its own perils. And at the end of the journey, Walking Smoke prepares to spring his trap. Star Path, the fourth book in the Gears’ People of Cahokia series, takes the reader out of the great city of Cahokia and into a land of rivers, forests, tribes, and exiled colonies, providing us with a rare look into the mystical underpinnings of Native American culture and the founding of Mississippian civilization. Book Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos

Download or read book Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos written by Samuel M. Steward, PhD and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the dark subculture of 1950s tattoos! In the early 1950s, when tattoos were the indelible mark of a lowlife, an erudite professor of English--a friend of Gertrude Stein, Thomas Mann, Andre Gide, and Thornton Wilder--abandoned his job to become a tattoo artist (and incidentally a researcher for Alfred Kinsey). Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos tells the story of his years working in a squalid arcade on Chicago’s tough State Street. During that time he left his mark on a hundred thousand people, from youthful sailors who flaunted their tattoos as a rite of manhood to executives who had to hide their passion for well-ornamented flesh. Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos is anything but politically correct. The gritty, film-noir details of Skid Row life are rendered with unflinching honesty and furtive tenderness. His lascivious relish for the young sailors swaggering or staggering in for a new tattoo does not blind him to the sordidness of the world they inhabited. From studly nineteen-year-olds who traded blow jobs for tattoos to hard-bitten dykes who scared the sailors out of the shop, the clientele was seedy at best: sailors, con men, drunks, hustlers, and Hells Angels. These days, when tattoo art is sported by millionaires and the middle class as well as by gang members and punk rockers, the sheer squalor of Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos is a revelation. However much tattoo culture has changed, the advice and information is still sound: how to select a good tattoo artist what to expect during a tattooing session how to ensure the artist uses sterile needles and other safety precautions how to care for a new tattoo why people get tattoos--25 sexual motivations for body artMore than a history of the art or a roster of famous--and infamous--tattoo customers and artists, Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos is a raunchy, provocative look at a forgotten subculture.
