Book Global Governance

Download or read book Global Governance written by Lisa Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As economic, social and environmental connections among states have grown stronger and denser in the last decades, new levels and types of governance have emerged. The process of globalization, while not entirely new, has created new challenges for policymakers attempting to reap its benefits and manage its effects. This volume pulls together work on global governance that examines these challenges and looks at the patterns of governance that emerge. The work is organized into six sections. The first introduces concepts crucial to the analysis of global governance, including representation, efficiency, and hierarchy. The next two sections turn to specific patterns of governance in two realms, security and economic affairs respectively. The fourth section examines legal dimensions of governance. The fifth section concentrates on the impact of global governance on domestic politics, while the sixth looks at how concepts of norms and legitimacy structure our understanding of governance. Overall, this collection reveals a rich scholarly understanding of globalization, governance, and institutions that builds on deep theoretical roots while shedding light on major policy issues.

Download or read book Global Trade written by John J. Kirton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade has long been a core part of international relations. Bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral trade flows and agreements have arisen in many ways and in many areas over the centuries. From regional arrangements, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, to the all-encompassing General Agreement on Tariffs and Trades and now the World Trade Organization, the system of global trade has seen struggles and successes alike. The traditional debate over liberalization and protectionism remains central today; and with ever-expanding globalization facing all states, the future of global trade seems to be no less controversial than it was centuries ago. By assembling the key scholarly works that have defined the field of global trade, this work addresses these debates and examines the past to see what the future of global trade might look like.

Book Governance in a Global Economy

Download or read book Governance in a Global Economy written by Miles Kahler and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critics of globalization claim that economic integration drains political authority from states: devolving authority to newly empowered regions, delegating it to supranational organizations, and transferring it to multinational firms and nongovernmental organizations. Globalization is also attacked for forcing convergence of state institutions and policies and threatening the ability of societies to chart their own democratically determined courses. In Governance in a Global Economy, Miles Kahler and David Lake assemble the contributions of seventeen leading scholars who have systematically investigated how global economic integration produces changes of governance. These authors conclude that globalization has created a new and intricate fabric of governance, but one that fails to match the stark portrait of beleaguered states. Exploring changes in governance across several policy areas (such as tourism, trade, finance, and fiscal and monetary policy), the authors demonstrate that globalization changes the policy preferences of some actors, increases the bargaining power of others, and opens new institutional options for yet others. By reintroducing agency and choice into our understanding of globalization, this book provides important new insights into the complex and contingent effects of globalization on political authority and governance. The introduction and the conclusion are by the editors; the contributors are James A. Caporaso, Benjamin J. Cohen, Barry Eichengreen, Zachary Elkins, Geoffrey Garrett, Peter Gourevitch, Virginia Haufler, Michael J. Hiscox, Robert O. Keohane, Lisa L. Martin, Walter Mattli, Kathleen R. McNamara, Joseph S. Book Regional Integration in South Asia What Role for Trade Facilitation

Download or read book Regional Integration in South Asia What Role for Trade Facilitation written by Tsunehiro Otsuki and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trade performance of countries in South Asia over the past two decades has been poor relative to other regions. Exports from South Asia have doubled over the past 20 years to approximately USD 100 billion. In contrast, East Asia's exports grew ten times over the same period. The low level of intraregional trade has contributed to weak export performance in South Asia. The empirical analysis in this paper demonstrates gains to trade in the region from reform and capacity building in trade facilitation at the regional level. When considering intraregional trade, if countries in South Asia raise capacity halfway to East Asia's average, trade is estimated to rise by USD 2.6 billion. This is approximately 60 percent of the total intraregional trade in South Asia. Countries in the region also have a stake in the success of efforts to promote capacity building outside its borders. If South Asia and the rest of the world were to raise their levels of trade facilitation halfway to the East Asian average, the gains to the region would be estimated at USD 36 billion. Out of those gains, about 87 percent of the total would be generated from South Asia's own efforts (leaving the rest of the world unchanged). In summary, we find that the South Asian region's expansion of trade can be substantially advanced with programs of concrete action to address barriers to trade facilitation to advance regional goals.
