Book Counterpredators

Download or read book Counterpredators written by Bill Kortenbach and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Counterpredators" is a modern solution to an ancient problem: Parents face the overwhelming responsibility of training their children to navigate the threat environment and safely molding them into powerful, self-aware, authentic adults. At the same time, many parents do not themselves possess the necessary skill set-and when their children sense this, they begin to adopt questionable heroes and role models. In the natural world, animal parents train their young by repeatedly exposing them to hazard, while demonstrating efficient risk management, yet our society teaches us to do the exact opposite: Shelter and protect our children from whatever might harm them. As a result, many children are profoundly unprepared to deal with real threat. Since both animal and human young are equally vulnerable, it is easy to spot the weak link: The unprepared human parent. To solve this problem, parents need to assume a powerful new identity, something unique and elemental that rivets the attention and imagination of their children. They must become counterpredators: individuals who have the skill and the will to engage and overcome human threats. "Counterpredators" is the story of how to achieve this transition using cutting edge methodology. Survival Response Conditioning --the re-activation of dormant, subconscious survival skills combined with high pressure, scenario based experiences--produces rapid, permanent change and provides the launch pad for an unbreakable bond of love and respect between parents and children.

Book Man the Hunted

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donna Hart
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-04-17
  • ISBN : 0429978715
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book Man the Hunted written by Donna Hart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man the Hunted argues that primates, including the earliest members of the human family, have evolved as the prey of any number of predators, including wild cats and dogs, hyenas, snakes, crocodiles, and even birds. The authors' studies of predators on monkeys and apes are supplemented here with the observations of naturalists in the field and revealing interpretations of the fossil record. Eyewitness accounts of the 'man the hunted' drama being played out even now give vivid evidence of its prehistoric significance. This provocative view of human evolution suggests that countless adaptations that have allowed our species to survive (from larger brains to speech), stem from a considerably more vulnerable position on the food chain than we might like to imagine. The myth of early humans as fearless hunters dominating the earth obscures our origins as just one of many species that had to be cautious, depend on other group members, communicate danger, and come to terms with being merely one cog in the complex cycle of life.

Book Behavioral Adaptation to Intertidal Life

Download or read book Behavioral Adaptation to Intertidal Life written by Guido Chelazzi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Behavioural Adaptation to Intertidal Life" held in Castiglioncello, Italy (May, 1987) was attended by 50 participants, most of whom presented requested lectures. It was perhaps the first time that specialists of various animal groups, from cnidarians to birds, were able to meet and discuss the importance of behavioural adaptation to this peculiar, sometimes very harsh environment. But the taxonomic barrier is not the only one which the meeting attemped to over come. Lately, the research on intertidal biology has spread from pure taxonomy and static analysis of community structure to such dynamic aspects as intra- and interspecific relationships, and physiological mechanisms aimed at avoiding stress and exploitation of limited-resources. This increasing interest stems not only from an inclination for this particular ecological system and some of its typical inhabitants, but also from the realization that rocky and sandy shore communities are suitable models for testing and improving some global theories of evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology and sociobiology. The number of eco-physiological and eco-ethological problems emerging from the study of intertidal animals is fascinatingly large and a complete understanding of this environment cannot be reached using a strictly "reductionistic" or a pure "holistic" approach.

Book Annual Lunar and Tidal Clocks

Download or read book Annual Lunar and Tidal Clocks written by Hideharu Numata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is more to biological rhythms than circadian clocks. This book aims at promoting the exciting potential of a deeper understanding of circannual, circatidal, and circalunar clocks. It highlights new developments, summarizes existing knowledge, and integrates different perspectives with the tools and ideas of diverse fields of current biology. For predominantly pragmatic reasons, research in recent decades was mostly concerned with circadian clocks. Clocks on other timescales, however, have been largely neglected and therefore still appear "enigmatic". Thanks to the rapid development of methods in molecular biology as well as in ecology, we are now able to re-approach these clocks. Laboratories around the world are showing fresh interest and substantial progress is being made in many independent projects. The book's two sections address the moon-derived circatidal, circasemilunar, and lunar cycles on the one hand (10 chapters), and the sun-derived circannual cycles on the other (6 chapters). This work brings together authors with an expansive array of expertise and study systems, ranging from tidal cycles of marine invertebrates to annual cycles of birds and mammals, and from behavioral to genetic and epigenetic backgrounds. While great challenges remain to be mastered, the book aims at conveying the excitement of unraveling, broadly, the rhythms of life.

Book excerpt: “A lyrical celebration . . . This engaging portrait of the Catskill wilderness will appeal to nature enthusiasts of all stripes.” —Library Journal (starred review) A red fox stands poised at the edge of a woodchuck den, his ears perked for danger as two pudgy fox cubs frolic nearby. A mother black bear and her cubs hibernate beneath a felled tree. A barred owl snags a hapless cottontail from a meadow with its precise talons. In The Quarry Fox and Other Tales of the Wild Catskills, Leslie T. Sharpe trains her keen eye and narrative gifts on these and other New York wildlife through her tales of close observations as a naturalist living in the Great Western Catskills. The Quarry Fox is the first in-depth study of Catskill wildlife since John Burroughs invented the genre of nature writing, in which Sharpe weaves her experiences of the seasons, plants, and creatures with the natural history of each organism, revealing their sensitivity to and resilience against the splendor and cruelty of Nature. Sharpe's frank, scientific observations join with her deeply felt connection to these creatures to instill an appreciation of the undaunted and variegated beauty of the Catskills and camaraderie with its animals. From contemplating the importance of milkweed for monarchs to lay their eggs to reveling in the first steps of a wobbly fawn, The Quarry Fox is a celebration of the natural world and our place in it. “A poignant and modern reminder of untamed creatures so close to home.” —The New York Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The predators that can hunt, kill and eat us occupy a unique place in the human psyche – and for good reason. Whether it's lions in Africa, tigers in India or sharks in the world's oceans, we are fascinated by – and often terrified of – predators. Animals that can hunt, kill, and eat us occupy a unique place in the human psyche, and for good reason. Predation forms a big part of our evolutionary history, but in the modern world there are many people who live alongside animals that can, and sometimes do, make them prey. In The Deadly Balance, biologist Adam Hart explores the complex relationships we have with predators, and investigates what happens when humans become prey. From big cats to army ants, via snakes, bears, wolves, crocodiles, piranhas and more, Hart busts some myths and explores the science behind such encounters. Despite their fearsome and often wildly exaggerated reputations, these animals have far more to fear from us than we do from them. By probing the latest conservation science, Hart explores how we might both conserve the world's predators and live safely alongside them.
