Book Countering Hitler s Spies

Download or read book Countering Hitler s Spies written by Stephen Wynn and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WWII espionage history reveals how a British counterintelligence program turned Nazi spies into valuable double agents. Far from the battlefields of the Second World War, a secret conflict of intelligence and counterintelligence was being waged. As German spies infiltrated the United Kingdom, they were captured by MI5—and offered a deal. Through the Double Cross System, they could turn on their own country and spy for the British. The Double Cross System and the spies it produced saved thousands of Allied lives. They even contributed to the success of the D-Day landings at Normandy. Double agents helped convince Nazi Germany that the Allied invasion of Europe would take place across the English Channel, at Calais. One double agent was so good at what he did that Germany awarded him the Iron Cross, whilst Britain made him a Member of the British Empire (MBE).

Book excerpt: When the military aspect of the Second World War is discussed, especially regarding how the war was won, people tend to talk about, Winston Churchill, D-Day, Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, the Blitz, the Dam Busters, the Allied bombing of German cities, Montgomery and the North Africa campaign, etc. However, there is one aspect, rarely mentioned and never quite fully appreciated, which played a massive role in winning the war. The Double Cross system, operated by MI5, involved capturing German spies who had been sent to the United Kingdom and offering them the opportunity to become double agents and spy for the British against the Germans. Most agreed, although the alternative wasn't that pleasant: refusing to become a spy would have almost certainly resulted in death. Spies who worked for MI5, especially those who had initially worked for the Germans, carried out sterling work which resulted in the saving of thousands of Allied lives. The success of the D-Day landings at Normandy, for example, was in part due to the excellent work of a double agent, who helped convince Nazi Germany that the Allied invasion of Europe would take place across the English Channel, at Calais. One double agent was so good at what he did that Germany awarded him the Iron Cross, whilst Britain made him a Member of the British Empire (MBE).

Book Hitler s Spies and Saboteurs

Download or read book Hitler s Spies and Saboteurs written by Charles Wighton and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Nuremberg, in 1945, General Erwin von Lahousen-Vivremont, head of Abwehr II—the sabotage division of the German Armed Forces Secret Service—shocked the world with his revelations of Nazi war crimes. He exposed the activities of Göring, Ribbentrop, and other top-ranking Third Reich officials. But there was much more he did not tell! Here is the rest of his story-the top-secret details of Germany’s international espionage ring during World War II. Lahousen had kept a diary. In the United States, Britain, France and other countries, his agents—often citizens of these countries, for Lahousen believed Germans lacked the spontaneity that made for expert spies—carried out some of the war’s most daring missions. In his diary, Lahousen named names and described espionage activities in detail. He wrote of Hermann Lang in the United States, a German-American who provided the Nazis with blueprints of U.S. military machinery; of Robey Leibbrandt, the young African “Olympic Boxer Spy”; of beautiful Vera, bilingual mistress of an Abwehr agent; and many others. Their astounding stories, along with that of the master spy, Lahousen, appear documented and unabridged in these pages. No fictional spy novel can compare with the drama and excitement of the authentic espionage missions revealed here. “Full of fascinating and astounding tales”—Library Journal “Gripping...”—Springfield Republican “A painstaking and convincing record of the daily world of espionage...”—Saturday Review

With a cast of colorful characters.” —Library Journal (starred review) Beating the Nazi Invader is a revealing and disturbing exploration of the darker history of Nazis, spies and “Fifth Columnist” saboteurs in Britain, and the extensive top-secret countermeasures taken before and during the real threat of invasion in 1940. The author’s research describes the Nazi Party organization in Britain and reveals the existence of the Gestapo headquarters in central London. The reader gains vivid insights into Nazi agents and terrorist cells, the Special Branch and MI5 teams who hunted them and investigated murders believed to have been committed by Third Reich agents on British soil. Accessing a host of recently declassified files the book explores the highly classified measures taken for the protection of the Royal Family, national treasures and gold reserves. The British government made extensive plans for the continuation of government in the event of invasion including the creation of all-powerful Regional Commissioners, “Black Lists” of suspected collaborators and a British resistance organization. We also learn of the Nazis’ own occupation measures for suborning the population and the infamous Sonderfahndungsliste G.B, the Nazi “Special Wanted List.” The result is a fascinating insight into the measures and actions taken to ensure that Great Britain did not succumb to the gravest threat of enemy invasion and occupation for centuries. “Provides fresh and incisive answers to some intriguing 80-year-old mysteries about wartime espionage.” —Britain at War “A truly engrossing work.” —History of War Magazine

Book Counterspy

Download or read book Counterspy written by Richard W. Cutler and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II and the beginning of the Cold War, Richard W. Cutler was an officer with the elite X-2 counterintelligence branch of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and with its successor, the Strategic Services Unit (SSU). Counterspy offers a rare firsthand account of the secret war against Hitler and the postwar competition with the Soviets for German intelligence assets. While with X-2, Cutler analyzed the super-secret Ultra intercepts and vetted agents about to be sent into Nazi Germany. Cutler provides an insightful overview of OSS operations during the war and their contribution to the Alliesa victory. This is also one of the few books to describe the role of the OSS and the SSU in the postwar occupation of Germany. Cutleras first job after the German surrender was to vet all of Allen Dullesas wartime sources inside Germany, who were aptly nicknamed the Crown Jewels. Just as the OSS was reorganized into the SSU, Cutler moved to Berlin, where his first task was to collect intelligence from former Nazis. Soon he became chief of counterespionage in Berlin. Soviet intelligence had already begun recruiting former German intelligence officers to spy on Americans, so Cutleras top priority was to uncover Soviet objectives and either neutralize or double their agents. Cutler reveals previously unpublished case histories of double agents against Soviet intelligence and details agentsa recruitment, missions, methods of operation, successes and failures, and fates. All of these events are recounted against the fascinating background of postwar Germany. He provides a vivid picture of the mood of the German people, how they rationalized war guilt, and how they coped with the devastation throughout the country. With photographs and a foreword by bestselling author Joseph E. Persico (Rooseveltas Secret War: FDR and World War II Espionage), Counterspy is a unique account of espionage during the momentous years of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible true story of the first four Nazi spies to infiltrate British soil is revealed in this WWII history. After the swift takeover of France and the Low Countries, Nazi Germany was on the crest of a wave. Only the United Kingdom stood in its way. Hitler quickly devised plans for the invasion of England, codenamed Operation Sealion. To lay the groundwork, a team of spies would be sent in advance to act as pathfinders for the incoming forces. Codenamed Operation Lena, this phase of the plan was considered a suicide mission by German military intelligence. They had only thirty days to recruit and train agents who had a less than convincing grasp of English language or customs. Hitler’s Spies revels the story of the first four agents to arrive on English soil—collectively known by MI5 as “The Brussels Four.” Using a wealth of primary materials, including newly declassified sources, Mel Kavanagh sheds light on one of the most audacious yet little-known operations of the Second World War, in which undertrained men were sent behind enemy lines at a time when Britain was gripped by spy paranoia.

Book The Spy in Hitler s Inner Circle

Download or read book The Spy in Hitler s Inner Circle written by Paul Paillole and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2016-03-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thrilling account of WWII espionage by the former French secret service chief chronicles an Allied spy’s actions in the German Cipher Office. A spy for the French Secret Service during World War II, Hans-Thilo Schmidt was embedded in the nerve center of the Third Reich. From deep within Hitler’s most sensitive operations, Schmidt created an intelligence network between France, Poland, and England. In The Spy in Hitler’s Inner Circle, France’s former secret service chief, Paul Paillole, offers a revealing chronicle of how Schmidt helped the Allies infiltrate German agencies and crack their encryption system, the Enigma machine. Paillole details how Schmidt delivered intelligence to France right from the source of the German Cipher Office. Revealed here are the most secret aspects of the so-called war of numbers that led to Alan Turing’s historic codebreaking achievement at Bletchley Park. From information about Germany’s rearmament and the reoccupation of the Rhineland to fundamental technical intelligence about the Enigma machine, Schmidt’s contributions were key to the Allied victory in the intelligence war.
