Download or read book Counterflows written by Vladimir Nikolaevich Shtern and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physical mechanisms that drive counterflows, examining how they emerge, develop, become double and multiple counterflows and comprise both global and local circulations. Counterflows play an important role in nature and technology. A natural example is the Gulf Stream and the opposite flow in the ocean depths. Technological applications include hydrocyclones, vortex tubes and vortex combustors. These elongated counterflows are wildly turbulent but survive intense mixing, a seeming paradox. Local counterflows, whose spatial extent is small compared with that of surrounding flows, occur behind bluff bodies and in swirling streams. The latter are often referred to as vortex breakdown bubbles, which occur in tornadoes and above delta wings. Most scale counterflows are cosmic bipolar jets. Most miniature counterflows occur in capillary menisci of electrosprays and fuel atomisers.

Book Cellular Flows

Download or read book Cellular Flows written by Vladimir Shtern and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cell, whose spatial extent is small compared with a surrounding flow, can develop inside a vortex. Such cells, often referred to as vortex breakdown bubbles, provide stable and clean flame in combustion chambers; they also reduce the lift force of delta wings. This book analyzes cells in slow and fast, one- and two-fluid flows and describes the mechanisms of cell generation: (a) minimal energy dissipation, (b) competing forces, (c) jet entrainment, and (d) swirl decay. The book explains the vortex breakdown appearance, discusses its features, and indicates means of its control. Written in acceptable, non-math-heavy format, it stands to be a useful learning tool for engineers working with combustion chambers, chemical and biological reactors, and delta-wing designs.

  • Author : Jozef Jarosinski
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2009-02-12

Download or read book Combustion Phenomena written by Jozef Jarosinski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensively using experimental and numerical illustrations, CombustionPhenomena: Selected Mechanisms of Flame Formation, Propagation, and Extinction provides a comprehensive survey of the fundamental processes of flame formation, propagation, and extinction. Taking you through the stages of combustion, leading experts visually display, mathematically explain, and clearly theorize on important physical topics of combustion. After a historical introduction to the field, they discuss combustion chemistry, flammability limits, and spark ignition. They also study counterflow twin-flame configuration, flame in a vortex core, the propagation characteristics of edge flames, instabilities, and tulip flames. In addition, the book describes flame extinction in narrow channels, global quenching of premixed flames by turbulence, counterflow premixed flame extinction limits, the interaction of flames with fluids in rotating vessels, and turbulent flames. The final chapter explores diffusion flames as well as combustion in spark- and compression-ignition engines. It also examines the transition from deflagration to detonation, along with the detonation wave structure. With downloadable resources of images that beautifully illustrate a range of combustion phenomena, this book facilitates a practical understanding of the processes occurring in the conception, spread, and extinguishment of a flame. It will help you on your way to finding solutions to real issues encountered in transportation, power generation, industrial processes, chemical engineering, and fire and explosion hazards.

Book Flows and Counterflows

Download or read book Flows and Counterflows written by Marcus Verhagen and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 25 years, artists have vigorously engaged the debate around globalization, examining cross-border exchange from mass migration to the dynamics of translation, and devising new conceptual categories and new formal and metaphorical resources along the way. Noted art critic Marcus Verhagens timely examination of artistic interventions, Flows and Counterflows tells the story of projects that draw out both the dangers and tangible benefits of global exchange. In seven thought-provoking illustrated essays Verhagen maps the global art worlds shifting terrain and offers an incisive and original account of contemporary arts relationship to the processes of globalisation. The softcover survey covers how art addresses global markers such as tourism and border control; how the art system itself has been reshaped; and how artists resist by building informal networks. Packed with clearly explained and illustrated contemporary artworks, it is an indispensable history of art for our current times. Verhagen teaches in the United States and Europe and has published extensively in LeftReview, Art Monthly, Frieze along with many other publications.
