Book Countdown to West Virginia Statehood

Download or read book Countdown to West Virginia Statehood written by Bob O'Connor and published by Infinity Pub. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 20, 1863, West Virginia became the 35th state. Most people think the statehood movement was a result of the majority of those who lived in western Virginia were pro-Union and came out of the decision of Virginia to secede from the Union. Not so at all. The fissure between the "planters" and "mountaineers", those who lived in eastern Virginia and those who lived in western Virginia started in 1776 with the first state constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia. That constitution restricted voting rights to persons who were large landowners who mainly lived in eastern Virginia. That restriction stayed on the books until 1850. Countdown to West Virginia statehood starts in the beginning and chronicles an amazing and interesting journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rogue State chronicles how West Virginia entered—and remains—in the Union under unconstitutional circumstances. Its severance from Virginia and reincorporation as a new state in 1863 occurred outside the bounds of constitutional legality. The United States government, while pledged to prevent the secession of eleven states from the Union, nevertheless condoned, abetted, supported, and ultimately affirmed secession of fifty counties without permission from Virginia. This unprecedented and unconstitutional process marks the only time in American history that a state was created and admitted to the Union outside the boundaries of the prescribed constitutional process. Lincoln’s attorney general even declared the process unconstitutional. Though secession was not permitted for states or parts of states by the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. government produced a façade of legality and constitutionality in 1863 to justify the secession of a part of one state to form another.

Book West Virginia Histories Volume 2

Download or read book West Virginia Histories Volume 2 written by Gerald Swick and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of West Virginia was born by cesarean section, its survival chances precarious, its legitimacy in question. The last slaveholding state admitted to the Union, it is the only state that owes its existence to America¿s Civil War. In Virginia¿s counties west of the Shenandoah Valley grievances against the Richmond government had long threatened to rend the state in two, and when Virginia decided to secede from the Union the fissure opened. A convention of Westerners voted to break away and seek independent statehood for their section, a dangerous and potentially unconstitutional path. The 100 articles that comprise Volume 2 of the West Virginia Histories series explore:¿ Aspects of slavery in Virginia¿s western mountains and its role in East-West tensions¿ Civil War battles, raids and other stories, including history¿s first military raid on an oil field¿ The region¿s tumultuous road to becoming the 35th state of the Union. Most of the articles originally appeared as a weekly column, ¿Once, Long Ago,¿ published in the Sunday Clarksburg Exponent Telegram between 1998 and 2014. Others were written expressly for this collection, including an updating of one authored for the June 2011 issue of Wonderful West Virginia magazine.Gerald D. Swick is the author of Historic Photos of West Virginia. He has written for the West Virginia Encyclopedia, America¿s Civil War, American History, and other publications. His work has been recognized with a literary fellowship in nonfiction writing, and his ¿Once, Long Ago¿ column, with its unique voice and conversational style, received an Associated Press Lifestyles Writing award for excellence in journalism.

Book excerpt: Written by Mingo County native Jeremy T.K. Farley, founder of Appalachian Magazine and descendant of a Confederate prisoner of war from Logan County, Farley not only lays out a very clear case as to why West Virginia was created illegally, but also links the state's unconstitutional beginning to many of the woes that have plagued the Mountain State throughout its entire existence. Championing the cause of Southern West Virginia, this book asserts that much of the Mountain State's disproportionate level of poverty, political suppression and historic labor wars - especially in the southern region - can be directly attributed to the illegal creation of West Virginia and the subsequent neglect following the West Virginia Statehood Act - America's coup d'etat. Though the state's motto may boldly proclaim that "Mountaineers are Always Free," in reality, thanks in large part to the unlawful precedence set by the 1861 assembly, West Virginia's mountaineers have historically been the most oppressed people in the nation. Perhaps the most heartbreaking element regarding the creation of the State of West Virginia is this: While the rest of the nation was casting off the evil chains of slavery in the closing days of the nineteenth century, the groundwork was being laid in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia for a new people to be enchained. In the century ahead, the plantations and cotton fields of Georgia gave way to the mines and company towns of Matewan and Paint Creek. The slave owners were replaced with distant industrial corporations profiteering on the backs of America's once independent mountaineers. Taskmasters were exchanged for notorious mercenaries and terrorists such as the Baldwin-Felts Detectives, whose acts of brutality are unrivaled by even the most demonic slave owners. It is both heartbreaking and frightening to witness how quickly the mountain people of southern West Virginia went from being known as the free spirited Scotch-Irish to impoverished miners living in coal camps begging for just a temporary respite - all of which can be traced to the illegal and ill-advised creation of West Virginia."
