This book was released on 1992 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly a million teachers will reach retirement age in the next 9 to 11 years. This report presents a complete state-by-state overview of the retirement programs available to America's teachers. Chapter 1 presents the issues of teacher aging, retirement, and early retirement and asks how school districts might effectively manage the retirement and replacement of teachers. Chapter 2 surveys retirement plans in the 50 states and provides information on how to calculate a teacher's pension, with relevant data by state. Chapter 3 looks at local and state programs to entice teachers to retire early. Empirical methods are used to assess the effectiveness of various plans. Case studies of early retirement incentive plans in six districts show how these plans work. Based on conclusions drawn from these data, school officials are advised on how to create, implement, and evaluate an early retirement program. Chapter 4 calls for a national task force on teacher retirement and argues that the future of the teacher retirement system depends on resolving six related issues: (1) threatened financial viability; (2) lack of consistency between local and state policies; (3) lack of portability of plans; (4) lack of system flexibility in investment and withdrawal of funds for teachers; (5) lack of control by teachers as individuals and as a group; and (6) lack of equity among teachers in various districts. Book Work and Retirement

Download or read book Work and Retirement written by Stanley Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s world recession and widespread unemployment had accentuated an existing trend – more people retiring from work early and living longer after doing so. Some were adequately prepared for a life of well-earned ‘leisure’ in retirement, but too many were not. The policies of employers, unions and governments on retirement needed to be challenged in societies where work opportunities were collapsing but where leisure activities and values were not yet strong enough to take their place. Originally published in 1982, Dr Parker, a sociologist, provides a careful and critical examination of what we knew about retirement and discusses possible alternative answers to the various problems involved at the time. The history of retirement is first considered, followed by a conceptual analysis of types of retirement. There are chapters on preparation for retirement, the capacity of older people to work, and on the varying experiences of retirement. Separate consideration is given to the question of work after retirement age and whether retirement is actually experienced as leisure. The concluding chapter examines various policy alternatives for dealing with the problems raised earlier in the book. Work and Retirement was intended for students of industrial sociology and industrial psychology, for personnel and human resource professionals, for trade unionists and for all those who had an interest in understanding the developments in the field of retirement and the older working population. Now it can be read in its historical context.

When Ros unexpectedly inherits Winter Manor on the condition that she oversee the restoration of the remote and dilapidated house, it seems the perfect place for her to retreat from her recently failed relationship, the death of her mother, and the loss of her job. But Winter Manor is not entirely at rest. The echoes of its past reach forward into the present, and Ros's life is perceptibly shaped by the lives-and loves-of the people who inhabited those rooms and corridors in the centuries before her. Then Anna arrives. The architect-with her designer clothes, hot car, and air of supreme professionalism-is at first an unwelcome, if necessary, intrusion. But as Ros learns Anna's truths, she finds solace from her past losses in their developing intimacy. And when their love is threatened, Ros must decide whether her own ghosts will forever define her, or if she can embrace her life for what it is-past, present, and future.
