Book The Principles and Practice of Health Evangelism

Download or read book The Principles and Practice of Health Evangelism written by Elvin Adams MD MPH and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medical missionary work should be a part of the work of every church in our land (Counsels on Health, 514). By the ministry of the word, the gospel is preached; by medical missionary work, the gospel is practiced (Vol. 13 Manuscript Releases, 303). Physical healing is bound up with the gospel commission. In the work of the gospel, teaching and healing are never to be separated (Ministry of Healing, 140). We have come to a time when every member of the church needs to take hold of medical missionary work (Vol. 16 Manuscript Releases, p. 145). The gospel is bound up with medical missionary work. Neither is to stand alone (Vol. 13 Manuscript Releases 303). We should ever remember that the object of the medical missionary work is to point sin-sick men and women to the man of Calvary (Ministry of Healing, 144). He (Jesus) made each work of healing an occasion of implanting in the heart the divine principles of his love and benevolence. Thus, his followers are to work (Review and Herald, May 2, 1912).

Every individual must be given the opportunity to choose between life and death. This volume is a call to action-a plea for believers to work for their Savior by bringing the gospel to the millions of people in the city, strategies, methods, selecting and training workers, and lessons from Scripture. Yes, the work will require much effort, especially in our day and age. But Ellen G. White doesnÆt mince words: ôDo not hover over the churches to repeat over and over again the same truths to the people, while the cities are left in ignorance and sin, unwarned and unlabored forö (The Upward Look, p. 274). Book excerpt: Healthful Living was originally published by the Medical Missionary Board, Battle Creek, Michigan, under the title Instruction Relating to the Principles of Healthful Living. So popular when it first came out that it became necessary to come out with a second and then a third edition the first year.We have reproduced this 1898 third edition which also contained two additional chapters, God in Nature and The Spirit Filled Life.In the third edition an appendix of parallel Scripture references was included. This Scripture referenced appendix will be found exceedingly helpful in making clear to the mind of the reader the fact that the principles presented in this work are not mere human inventions; but are a part of the divine order appointed for the human family at the beginning, and which is to be restored when all things are made new.Wherever it has been received, this book has been recognized as a veritable storehouse of seed thoughts relating to the great practical themes with which it deals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although not always unswervingly, from antiquity until today, Christians have engaged in charity. As settings changed, compassion evolved, laying in place an ongoing mosaic of Christian ideas and institutions surrounding care. From the antique and medieval to the modern and contemporary, each age offers unique actors and insights into how compassion is viewed and achieved. We consider repeating motifs and novel appearances in the arc of Christian compassion which enlighten and inspire. Encountered on the journey are the formation and sacrifice of ancient Christians; an emphasis on virtues taught through sparing and sharing; the nascent social welfare of the Byzantine church; the sacralization and mobilization of a medieval church; innovative ideas from reformers who advance the role of the state; and modern movements in justice, peace, humanitarianism, mutual aid, and community development.

Book excerpt: Whether they were utopian communitarians, sun-seeking gurus, or Protestant health reformers, Southern California's spiritual seekers drew on the United States' deepening global encounters and consumer cultures to pair religious and personal reinvention with cultural and spiritual revitalization. Through a rereading of the region's cultural landscape, Golden States provides an alternative history of California religion and spirituality, showing that seekers developed a number of paths to fulfillment that enhanced the region's lifestyle brand. Drawing on case studies as varied as surfing and yoga practices, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, and the only designated "Blue Zone" in the United States, this work explores the long-term impact of alternative beliefs on the region. In doing so, it highlights the ongoing tensions between privileging personal choice and pursuing social good as communities navigated whether the commitment to the emotional and therapeutic needs and desires of individual believers should be pursued at the expense of broader efforts to achieve collective well-being.
