Book Counseling Boys and Men with ADHD

Download or read book Counseling Boys and Men with ADHD written by George Kapalka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder primarily affects boys and male teens, and the symptoms can continue on into adulthood. Consequently, clinicians need to be well-versed in techniques to treat this disorder that are tailored specifically to the needs of males; there are, however, few resources available to them. This guidebook provides a review of the counseling, educational, and medical interventions that can benefit boys and men with ADHD. Kapalka begins with a review of symptoms, etiology, assessment, and diagnosis and then discusses a variety of specific interventions: individual counseling, parenting techniques, classroom interventions, and group counseling techniques. The use of medication in conjunction with counseling is also considered. Throughout all of the topics covered, Kapalka emphasizes what it is like to be male and have ADHD and describes the impacts that masculinity and gender expectations can have on the expression of and response to the disorder.

Download or read book Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males written by Arthur M. Horne and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1999-08-09 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur M. Horne and Mark S. Kiselica have gathered a large and impressive team of authorities from around the United States and New Zealand to produce a comprehensive volume on counseling boys. The contributing authors address a wide variety of developmental and cultural considerations pertaining to counseling boys, and they offer extremely useful recommendations for helping 11 special clinical populations of boys. I know of no other book on boys that is as broad in its scope or as practical in its approach as is this groundbreaking work.—Arnold A. Lazarus, Ph.D., ABPP,Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Rutgers University "This wonderful volume represents the advancing developments of the field, is broad and comprehensive in scope, offers outstanding clinical and practical suggestions, and includes a veritable ′who′s who′ of counselors and psychologists among its contributors. Mental health professionals and graduate students will treasure this reference work." —Ronald F. Levant, Ed.D., ABPP, Dean, Center for Psychological Studies, Nova Southeastern University, Ft.Lauderdale, Florida "The Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males fills a gap in the counseling field by providing counselors in schools and community agencies with information that will guide them in expanding their services to the males with whom they work. The developmental background is very helpful to counselors in expanding their understanding of the nature of problems boys′ experience in growing up; the section on cultural considerations illustrates sensitivity to the varying racial, ethnic intervention, and treatment programs that may be used in schools and community agencies. This book will be an extremely helpful resource for counselors in their work with boys and adolescent males, it is highly recommended for all mental health practitioners." --Pamela Paisley, Ed.D The University of Georgia, President, Association of Counselor Education and Supervision "As we try to understand the violence that has rocked our schools, one common denominator stands out: The perpetrators are all young males. School counselors confirm that there are a lot of angry young men out there. Why are they so angry? What can we do to better understand them? How can we help? This book promises to be a ′must read′ for all school counselors." —Nancy S. Perry, NCC, NCSC, American School Counselor Association "Arthur M. Horne and Mark S. Kiselica have produced a timely compendium which offers an exciting glimpse at important developments related to boys and men. This well thought out volume boldly ranges beyond conventional boundaries and will be a useful addition to the available literature on boys and men."--Don C. Locke, Ph.D., North Carolina State University The Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males provides the reader with a context for understanding the developmental dilemmas experienced by male youth and how male development, both adaptive and maladaptive, is shaped by a complex interaction of biological, cultural, and economic forces. This book is organized into three parts. Part I provides the reader with an understanding of how the psychological, career, and athletic development of boys is shaped by a complex interaction of biological, social, cultural, and economic forces. Part II covers cultural considerations pertaining to counseling with African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Native American, and White, Non-Hispanic boys. Part III addresses special populations of boys, including gay boys, teenage fathers, sexually abused boys, boy sexual offenders, developmentally disabled boys, shy and anxious boys, depressed boys, bullies, male youth gangs, and boy substance abusers.

Book excerpt: Men do not often come for counseling because they are having difficulties with being a father, but many of the presenting problems and reasons for seeking help can be related to the roles and responsibilities of fathering. The dramatic shift in societal expectations of being a father can often leave men confused as they navigate conflicting views, demands, and responsibilities. Counseling Fathers is designed to bridge the gap between fathers and professional helpers. This book provides the mental health practitioners with a guide for working with fathers in therapy, whether the issues of fathering are at the center of the discussions or in the background. The organization of the book speaks to the variety of today's fathers and the issues that they face. Part I provides an historical overview of the fathering movement, a strength-based approach to working with fathers, and an assessment paradigm using gender role conflict theory. Part II takes a cross-cultural approach, with a series of chapters that look at counseling with Latino, Asian, Black, and Caucasian fathers. Part III looks at specific populations of fathers, including first time fathers, teen fathers, stay-at-home fathers, gay fathers, and older fathers. Counseling Fathers provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive resource for family and individual practitioners who work with men who father.

Book Dying to be Men

  • Author : Will Courtenay
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2011-05-09
  • ISBN : 1136988297
  • Pages : 578 pages

Download or read book Dying to be Men written by Will Courtenay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masculinity has a powerful effect on the health of men and boys. Indeed, many of the behaviors they use to "be men" actually increase their risk of disease, injury, and death. In this book, Dr. Will Courtenay, an internationally recognized expert on men’s health, provides a foundation for understanding this troubling reality. With a comprehensive review of data and literature, he identifies specific gender differences in the health-related attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of men and boys and the health consequences of these differences. He then describes the powerful social, environmental, institutional, and cultural influences that encourage their unhealthy behaviors and constrain their adoption of healthier ones. In the book’s third section, he more closely examines the health needs of specific populations of men, such as ethnic-minority men, rural men, men in college, and men in prisons. Courtenay also provides four empirical studies conducted with multidisciplinary colleagues that examine the associations between masculinity and men and boys’ health beliefs and practices. Finally, he provides specific strategies and an evidence-based practice guideline for working with men in a variety of settings, as well as a look to the future of men’s health. Medical professionals, social workers, public health professionals, school psychologists, college health professionals, mental health practitioners, academics, and researchers from a broad array of disciplines, and anyone interested in this topic will find it to be an extensively researched and accessible volume.

Book Gender in the Therapy Hour

Download or read book Gender in the Therapy Hour written by Holly Barlow Sweet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of literature about working with men in counseling and psychotherapy, but almost none of it addresses the unique issues that a female clinician can face with a male client. These women do not have a basis for a complete understanding of the impact our society’s ideas about gender can have on a man, his masculinity, and his feelings toward talk therapy, in part because they are not men themselves. The contributors to this book, all female clinicians who have worked extensively with men, have set out to provide their female peers with a guide for therapeutically engaging and helping men. Chapters explore how each author became involved in men’s issues, case studies and examples from her own practice that illustrate her approach, and her own assessment of what works best with male clients. Topics considered include core treatment issues, such as transference and counter-transference, beginning and ending therapy with men, and ethical dilemmas; working in different therapy modalities; and doing therapy with diverse populations of men. The book concludes with an edited transcript of a discussion amongst the authors about their personal experiences working with male clients. This will be an important book for all female therapists who work with male clients and are looking for ways to better understand and tailor their approaches to meet the needs of men in therapy.
